High School Baseball

New London will face off against Central Lee tomorrow, June 4th, at 5:30 pm at home. 

West Burlington will take on Van Buren County tomorrow at 5:30 pm on the road. 

Van Buren County will square off against Louisa-Muscatine tonight at 5:30 pm at home. 

Winfield-Mt. Union will face off against Central Lee tonight at 5:30 pm on the road. 

Burlington Notre Dame traveled north to Waterloo to compete in an invitational over the weekend and the Nikes finished 2-0. Their first win came against Easton Valley 4-1. Spencer Brent and Caden Schwenker combined to throw 17 strikeouts in the win as Lucas Johnson tallied two RBIs. 

The offense generated five extra base hits as the Nikes took down Wapsie Valley 12-5 in game two. Dylan Kipp slapped two doubles and Eli Oleson added his own double as they each tabbed two RBIs. Burlington Notre Dame will host Lone Tree tonight at 5:30 pm. 

Mediapolis will take on Wapello tonight at 5:30 pm at home. 

Fairfield will host Burlington tonight at 5:30 pm in a doubleheader. 

Mt. Pleasant will travel to Keokuk for a doubleheader tonight with first pitch scheduled for 5:30 pm. 

High School Softball

West Burlington competed in an invitational over the weekend in Oskaloosa and kept their win streak alive despite some dramatics. Game one was an extra innings thriller that saw the Falcons score the winning run in the 9th inning to defeat Newton 4-3. Orayana Gonzalez pitched the complete game, striking out three along with adding an RBI on offense. 

Game two saw the Falcons soar to a 10-0 shellacking of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont. Anna Engberg, Lyndsey Kelley, and Logan Kelley each collected two RBIs in the win as Madelyn Thomas pitched the complete game shutout, allowing only three hits. The Falcons will host Columbus tonight at 7 pm. 

Mt. Pleasant will take on Keokuk tonight in a road doubleheader at 5:30 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 5:15 pm. 

Winfield-Mt. Union will face off against Central Lee tonight at 5:30 pm.

Holy Trinity Catholic will attempt to get back in the win column against Mediapolis tomorrow at 7:30 pm on the road. 

Mediapolis will square off against Wapello tonight at 5:30 pm in a home game. 

Danville will host Pekin tonight at 7 pm. 

Van Buren County will take on Louisa-Muscatine tonight at 7 pm at home. 

High School Soccer

The 2024 boys’ and girls’ state championships took place over the weekend and here’s who walked away with the titles. 

Starting with the boys’ in Class 1A, #8 Van Meter’s Cinderella run was foiled by #3 North Fayette Valley 2-0. Trey Frieden saved all five shots for the TigerHawks.

Class 2A saw the unlikely matchup of #5 Bishop Heelan going against #7 Assumption and it was the Crusaders who scored in overtime that won the contest 3-2.

Class 3A featured another overtime thriller between #1 Des Moines Hoover and #2 Dallas Center-Grimes. Ben Jackson’s two goals helped propel the Mustangs to the title with a 3-2 final. 

Lastly, #1 Johnston cruised to the Class 4A title with a 3-0 win over #2 Dowling Catholic.

Moving over to the girls’ side, Nevada’s Joslynn Farmer kept Denver off the board with six saves as the Cubs claimed the Class 1A title. Isabelle Nelson tallied a goal and an assist in the win. 

In Class 2A, #1 North Polk scored first but #3 Dallas Center-Grimes saw Landry Glasgow score twice on their way to a 6-1 final and their third consecutive title.

Finally, in the biggest surprise of the tournament, #7 Bettendorf grabbed the Class 3A title with a 3-1 over Valley. Carson Bohanek nabbed a hat-trick for the Bulldogs. 

Prospect League

The Burlington Bees split their weekend schedule. The Bees fell to the O’Fallon Hoots 4-2 on Saturday as Jackson Rooker and Cooper Donlin tabbed RBIs in the contest. 

Yesterday, the Bees won an extra innings thriller that saw Merrick Mathews hit a two-run walk off home run in the 10th inning to give Burlington the win over the Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp 11-9. The Bees will host the Springfield Lucky Horseshoes tonight at 6:30 pm. 

The Clinton LumberKings beat the Pistol Shrimp on Saturday 5-2 as Chase Womack and Brayden Buchanan each grabbed two RBIs in the win. 

Last night, the LumberKings fell to the Alton River Dragons 4-3. Womack added another RBI to his season total. Clinton will host the Bees tomorrow, June 4th, at 6:30 pm.
