Prep Football: Mount Pleasant Stumbles Again, W-MU Stumbles, New London Rolls:

Clinton 49, Mount Pleasant 7

Clinton scored 49 unanswered points as the River Kings rolled to a 49-7 victory over Mount Pleasant last Friday night.

Clinton quarterback Jai Jensen threw for four touchdown passes, ran for one and tailback Taivian Bailey had two scores.

Mount Pleasant took the game’s opening series 13 plays finishing with a one-yard touchdown rush by Carson Coleman.

That was their lone score.

Mount Pleasant fell to 1-7 with the loss and they remain winless in district play.

This week they’ll meet up with Class 4A’s top-ranked North Scott.

Kick is set for 7:30 p.m. from Mapleleaf Athletic Complex.

English Valleys 54, Winfield-Mount Union 18 

Winfield-Mount Union fell behind early as English Valleys cemented their role as the district runner-up with a 54-18 win over Winfield-Mount Union.

The Wolves would have clinched district runner-up with a win over the Bears.

English Valleys used a 27-point second quarter to pull away.

Winfield finishes their regular season 4-3.

English Valleys improved to 6-1.

New London 32, HLV 6

New London won their second straight with an easy 32-6 win over HLV Friday night.

Boden Pickle had eight carries for 100 yards and scored three times.

New London closes their regular season 4-3.

HLV ends the season 1-7.

8-player playoffs will begin next Friday in the Round of 32.

Prep Football: 8-Player, A, 1A and 2A Postseason Brackets Released:

Postseason football will begin in earnest this week with several area matchups in 8-Player and Class 1A taking place Friday night.

In our area, WACO is the top-dog.

The Warriors, who come in No. 5 in the latest Radio Iowa Football Poll, will play host to Edgewood-Colesburg (5-3).

The Vikings clinched their playoff berth last week with a 54-20 win over Midland, which snapped a mild two-game losing streak.

New London also clinched a playoff berth with their win over HLV Friday.

The Tigers will get top-ranked Montezuma and the high-flying Braves offense orchestrated by all-state quarterback Eddie Burgess.

Burgess has accounted for 48 total touchdowns this year, 25 through the air and 23 on the ground.

In Class 1A, Mediapolis will take on Pella Christian in first-round play this Friday.

The Bulldogs had a pseudo-bye week last week after Louisa-Muscatine forfeited.

Junior running back Anthony Isley is the straw that stirs that Mediapolis offense.

Isley has rushed for 1,120 yards and 12 touchdowns on the campaign.

Pella Christian is 7-1 and are led by dual-threat quarterback Isaac Kacmarynski who has accounted for 29 total scores this year.

All first round playoff matchups will begin at 7:00 p.m. this Friday.

Prep Volleyball: Postseason Play Kicks Off Tonight:

Postseason volleyball play gets underway tonight with action in Class 1A ruling the area.

In our featured matchup, New London will host Moravia tonight.

The No. 12 Tigers are 24-13 on the season and are paced by Natalie Burden and her 3.2 kills per set.

Emma Nye leads the New London backrow with 6.2 digs per set.

Moravia enters first round play 2-20.

Match-time is slated for 7:00 p.m.

Elsewhere in the area tonight, WACO will welcome in Keota in first round play.

The winners between New London-Moravia and WACO-Keota will square off in the second round Wednesday.

Winfield-Mount Union will get Highland.

The Lady Wolves are 20-10, Highland is 11-14.

Should Winfield-Mount Union hold on, they’ll get either Wapello or Morningstar Academy.

The two top 1A seeds — Notre Dame and Holy Trinity — are off until Wednesday.

In Class 2A tonight, Columbus is at Durant — with the winner getting top-seeded Wilton, while Van Buren County hosts Cardinal.

The winner of that scarp will get Mediapolis.

College Football: Iowa Drops After Loss, Iowa State RV:

The Iowa football team has dropped nine spots in the latest Associated Press Top-25 poll following their 24-7 loss to Purdue on Saturday

The Hawkeyes are No. 11 in this week’s poll.

Iowa State, who earned a 33-20 road win at Kansas State are receiving votes.

Georgia, Cincinnati and Oklahoma are the top-three this week.

Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State go 5, 6, 7 this week.

Michigan State is up one to No. 9.

Purdue entered the top-25, the Boilermakers are No. 25 in the newest AP poll.

The Hawkeyes will rest up on their bye week before traveling to Wisconsin on October 30th.

Iowa State will host No. 8 Oklahoma State this Saturday at Jack Trice Stadium.
