High School Football

The WACO Warriors will be playing in the State Championship for the first time in school history against Remsen St. Mary’s in a battle of the unbeatens this Thursday at 9:30 am here on KILJ. The Warriors will be leaning on Simeon Reichenbach to lead the offense, while the Hawks will lean on dual threat quarterback Cael Ortmann to get past the outstanding pass rush the Warriors tout.

High School Girls Basketball

Winfield-Mt. Union will have a new head coach patrolling the courts in alumnus Mendy McCreight. She has the responsibility to step in for Mitch Wachs, who led the Wolves to back-to-back state titles in 1995 and 1996. McCreight coached at Southwest Valley and led the Timberwolves to a regional final in 2018. She is excited for the opportunity to coach a team that reached the regional semifinals and graduated only two seniors last year.

Elementary Basketball Tournament

Iowa Wesleyan Athletics

The women’s basketball team split their two games at the Viterbo Classic after losing 70-48 to Dakota State University on day one but being the host team, Viterbo University, 74-63. Breanna Wendland paced the Tigers with 23 points and seven rebounds, she was aided by Isabell West’s double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds, including 5 offensive rebounds. Wendland led the Tigers in points for the weekend with 38 adding 17 rebounds, while West scored 35 points and led the team with 18 rebounds. Their next game will be Tuesday, November 15th, at Culver-Stockton College at 6 pm.

The men’s basketball team went 2-0 at the Fairfield Inn Classic after they dominated East-West University 77-55 on day one. Henry Shannon collected a double-double as he scored 15 points and 10 rebounds, both team highs. The Tigers then faced off against Columbia College on day two and won off a strong second half performance outscoring Columbia 40 to 25 to make the final 73-64. Joey Brown IV led the Tigers in points with 19, followed by Shannon with 13. Brown ended the weekend with 27 points and 8 rebounds, and Shannon tallied 28 points and 15 rebounds.Their next game is Friday, November 18th, against Waldorf University at 7:30 pm for the Cobble Inn & Suites Classic.

The Tigers men’s and women’s wrestling teams will be traveling to Simpson college to compete in a dual match November 16th.

The Tiger volleyball team saw two of its members be named to the Continental Athletic Conference All-Conference teams. Alexis Hafenstine earned First-Team All-Conference honors and Libero of the Year. She finished with 639 digs on season and had 24 serving aces as the leader of the Tigers defensively. Emma Lincoln was named to the Second-Team as she finished the year with 166 kills with a kill efficiency of 0.183, adding 9 aces from the service line.

Both the men’s and women’s soccer team had a player named to the Continental Athletic Conference All-Conference Second-Team. For the women’s team, Jaycee Page received the honor after scoring four goals and added an assist to the season statistics. For the men, Richard Arch earned the honor after scoring six goals on the season with a 0.615 shooting percentage.

The men’s and women’s cross country teams will have Logan Lucas and Lily Garnsey run at the 2022 National Championship meet November 18th with the men running at 8:30 am and the women at 9:30 am.
