High School Volleyball
In Class 1A, #3 Holy Trinity Catholic fell to #1 Ankeny Christian last night in straight sets 25-21, 25-18, and 25-17. The Eagles were unstoppable from the service line, tallying 11 aces to claim back-to-back state championships.
Mary Kate Bendlage notched a team leading 11 kills to claim a spot on the All-Tournament team. Teagan Snaadt’s 18 digs helped nab her a spot on the All-Tournament team. Natalie Randolph grabbed 10 assists, while Taegan Denning grabbed two kills and an assist. Head Coach Melissa Freesmeier talked about how much this senior class will be missed.
The lone bright spot of the night was Mikaela Richter’s induction into the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union’s Volleyball Hall of Fame last night and Coach Freesmeier discussed how special the moment was for her.
In Class 2A, #1 Dike-New Hartford swept #2 Hinton last night to claim the championship and finished the season 50-0.
In Class 3A, #3 Western Christian, in their first season playing at the 3A level, pulled off the upset over #1 Mount Vernon by a score of 3-1 to earn the crown.
For Class 4A, #4 North Scott continued their momentum after taking down Clear Creek-Amana to sweep #2 Indianola and win the championship by scores of 25-17, 25-16, and 25-12.
In Class 5A, #1 Dowling Catholic and #3 Waukee Northwest participated in the most competitive championship match of the day with five sets needed to decide the winner. The Wolves exited with the championship after winning the fifth set 15-12.
High School Football
For 8-player, #1 Winfield-Mt. Union will be heading to the UNI-Dome for the first time since 1999 after narrowly escaping #7 Don Bosco last night 34-29. The Wolves will take on Bishop Garrigan on Wednesday, November 8th, at 10 am. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will have the call with the pregame show at 9:45 am.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck will face off against Bedford on Wednesday at 1 pm.
For Class 2A, #10 Mediapolis will take on #4 Monticello at home tonight.
In Class 3A, Mt. Vernon and Williamsburg will face off tonight with the winner moving on to the semifinals.
High School Basketball
The Mt. Pleasant girls team will host a jamboree on November 13th with four games on the slate with each game given a 45 minute time limit.
Lone Tree and Burlington will start off the night with the first game at 6 pm. Mediapolis and Keokuk will follow at 6:45 pm. Winfield-Mt. Union will take on Fairfield at 7:30 pm. Lastly, Mt. Pleasant and WACO will face off at 8:15 pm.
College Football
Iowa State University will celebrate their homecoming tomorrow, November 4th, against Kansas, as the Cyclones are locked in a five-way tie for first place in the Big 12.
Iowa will travel to face off against Northwestern at Wrigley Field tomorrow at 2:30 pm.
