High School Football

Mt. Pleasant will stay at home to take on Keokuk on Friday, October 11th, at 7:30 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 7:15 pm. Head coach John Bowlin will be looking to put together a good week of practice heading into this week’s contest,

“We got to bounce back Monday and get ready to go. So, I think it’ll be a great game. We’ll come out and compete our tails off. We get to be at home again, which is great. And, you know, I think if we build off of this week we can move the ball. We just got to, you know, fix some things and clean up a few things. And I think we’ll have a great opportunity to get a win.”

Columbus will face off against Van Buren County on Friday at 7 pm. 

Central Lee will square off against Mid-Prairie on the road on Friday at 7:30 pm. 

Mediapolis will compete against Davis County on Friday at 7:30 pm on the road. 

WACO will hit the road to take on English Valleys on Friday at 7 pm. 

Danville will be tested on the road against #4 Lisbon at 7 pm on Friday.  

New London will compete against Moravia on the road on Friday at 7 pm. 

West Burlington/Notre Dame will host Albia on Friday at 7:30 pm. 

Winfield-Mt. Union will host Mormon Trail on Friday at 7 pm.

Wapello will travel to Pekin on Friday at 7 pm.

Fairfield will take on South Tama on Friday at 7 pm at home. 

High School Volleyball

New London hosted a tournament over the weekend and #12 West Burlington exited as the champions after defeating the hosts in straight sets 25-6 and 25-10. The Falcons also took down Burlington Notre Dame (21-7, 21-14) and English Valleys (21-16, 21-11) in sweeps. Mady Hamelton finished the tournament with 20 kills as she also eclipsed 500 career kills. Brenna Beggs also tallied 20 kills to go along with three blocks, while Taryn Snodgrass grabbed 58 assists and four aces. 

Burlington Notre Dame picked up wins over English Valleys (21-10, 21-10) and Winfield-Mt. Union (25-19, 25-14) in straight sets. Addi Bockway led the team with 21 kills, while Emma Elmore grabbed 49 assists. 

West Burlington will square off against New London tomorrow, October 8th, at 7:30 pm on the road. 

Mediapolis will travel to Burlington Notre Dame tomorrow at 7 pm. 

Winfield-Mt. Union will travel to Highland tomorrow at 7:30 pm.

Van Buren County will celebrate their senior night tomorrow at 7:30 pm against #3 Holy Trinity Catholic. 

Central Lee will take on Danville tomorrow at home to celebrate their senior night at 7:30 pm. 

Wapello will square off against Hillcrest Academy tomorrow at 7:30 pm on the road. 

Mt. Pleasant and Fairfield will be gearing up for the first round of the Southeast Conference tournament at Keokuk tomorrow at 5 pm. 

WACO will face off against Lone Tree tomorrow at 7:30 pm on the road. 

Columbus will take on Highland on Thursday, October 10th, at 7:30 pm at home.

High School Cross Country

Mt. Pleasant, WACO, Wapello, and Fairfield will travel to Hillcrest Academy today. 

Mediapolis and Columbus will be co-hosting the Mike Jay Invitational with Danville, Van Buren County, WACO, Central Lee, Winfield-Mt. Union, New London, Holy Trinity Catholic, West Burlington/Notre Dame, and Wapello all competing on Thursday, October 10th.

Southeastern Community College

The volleyball team finished 3-1 at the Rock Valley Tournament after splitting their matches over the weekend with a loss to the hosts three sets to one (20-25, 25-23, 22-25, and 18-25) and a sweep over Harper College (25-16, 25-20, and 25-23). The Blackhawks will compete against Western Iowa Tech Community College on Wednesday, October 9th, at 6 pm on the road. 

College Football

#11 Iowa State was doing everything right in front of the home crowd as the Cyclones ran away with a 43-21 victory over Baylor for their best start since 1980. The offense rushed for 265 yards with Jaylon Jackson leading the way with 107 yards and two touchdowns, while Rocco Becht found Jayden Higgins for 116 yards and one of his two passing touchdowns. Iowa State will travel to West Virginia on Saturday, October 12th, at 7 pm. KILJ 98.5 FM and AM 1130 will have the call.

Iowa was dismantled in the second half by #2 Ohio State over the weekend as the Hawkeyes lost 35-7. Kaleb Johnson was the lone bright spot of the offense with 86 rushing yards and the lone touchdown of the game. The Hawkeyes will host Washington on Saturday at 11 am. KILJ 105.5 FM will have the broadcast.
