Car vs. Deer

On September 9 at approximately 4:08AM, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a car vs. deer crash near the intersection of New London Road & Salem Road south of Lowell, Iowa. After an investigation it was determined Richard Marion Nelson of West Point, Iowa, was operating a white, 2017, cargo van traveling northbound on New London Road. A deer ran out in front of the cargo van which caused the cargo van to strike the deer with its front left grill/bumper area. The van sustained functional damage. No injuries were reported. The total estimated damages to the van were approximately $3,500.

Rick Menke

Richard Joseph “Rick” Menke, 65, of Tucson, Arizona, passed away August 1, 2020 in Tuscan due to to cardiac complications.

He was born March 20, 1955 to Willis and Agnella (Stuekerjuergen)Menke of St. Paul, Iowa. On October 17, 1981, he married Catherine A. Kirkland, in Ottumwa, Iowa. They were married almost 39 years.

Besides his wife, Catherine, is survived by two sons, Nicholas(Valerie) Menke and Tyler (Chelsea) Menke; one daughter, Brooke Menke, two sisters, Victoria Blint of West Point, and Jean Blackwell of Kingman, Arizona and five brothers Donald Menke of Greensboro, Georgia, Mike Menke of Omaha, Nebraska, Randall Menke of West Point, Iowa, William Menke of Algonquin, Illinois and Melvin Menke of Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Rick was a graduate of the former Marquette High School in West Point, Iowa. He worked for most of his life in management and sales, recently retiring from Kelloggs Company.

His body was cremated. Due to the Covid-19 issues, only a private family prayer service was held in Tucson. A memorial gathering may be set at a later date.

The family wished to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers.

IATC Announces Week Two Cross Country Rankings:

Danville-New London has two ranked in the latest Boys’ Class 2A cross country rankings released by the Iowa Track and Field Coaches Association yesterday.

Junior Ty Carr is currently slated just outside the top-10, at #11 this week, while teammate and fellow junior Alexander Julian is #14, this week.

In girls’ Class 2A, Danville-New London’s Addison Parrott dropped from #3 to #7. The senior picked up a win last week, yet still somehow fell in the rankings.

Danielle Hostetler, a Mid-Prairie freshman, remains No. 1 in the girls’ rankings.

In boys’ Class 1A, Winfield-Mount Union’s Brody Barton moved up three spots to #25. Brady Gabriel of Bellevue Marquette is 1A’s top boys’ runner.

Area Volleyball Round-Up:

Winfield-Mount Union 3, Wapello 0

Winfield-Mount Union received 20 kills from Jenna Buffington as they rolled to a sweep victory over conference rival Wapello.

The Lady Wolves picked up 25-13, 25-21, 25-19 wins to improve their standing to 6-2.

Melina Oepping and Bradie Buffington both chipped in with seven kills for Winfield, who now will be off until Saturday, when they play in the Wilton tournament.

Wapello dropped to 4-7 — they’re at Columbus, Thursday night.

Mediapolis 3, Highland 0

Haley Steffener had 11 kills to help pace Mediapolis to a sweep victory over Highland last night.

The Bullettes earned 25-17, 25-22, 25-11 wins to snap a four-match losing skid.

Mediapolis is now 1-4, they’ll take on Hillcrest Academy, Thursday.

Highland fell to 2-5.

WACO 3, West Burlington 1 

WACO coughed up one game but otherwise dominated in a Super Conference bout with West Burlington at home, last night.

The Warriors fell in game one 26-24, but rallied for 25-18, 25-19 and 25-20 wins to improve to a sublime 9-1 this year.

The loss was West Burlington’s first of the year, they’re now 4-1.

WACO will be off tonight before traveling to Eldon to take on Cardinal, Thursday night.

Van Buren County 3, Cardinal 0 

Van Buren picked up their third win of the season, sweeping Cardinal 25-21, 25-20, 25-22 to improve to 3-2

Van Buren will take on Central Lee on the road, Thursday night.

Cardinal fell to 2-3.

Mount Pleasant OL Picks Up Simpson Offer: 

Mount Pleasant senior offensive lineman Cooper Pullis has picked up yet another offer to play football at the next level, this time from American Rivers power, Simpson College, Pullis announced via social media.

Pullis, a 6’1, 280-pound guard, also has garnered offers from Augustana University, Bemidji State University, and Grand View.

Mount Pleasant football will take on Fairfield this Friday night, with kick-off slated for 7:30 p.m.

Nathan Bloechl and Kent Bennett will have the call beginning beginning with the Panther Tailgate Show at 7:00 p.m.

Mount Pleasant Cross Country Readies for Waterworks Invite:

The Mount Pleasant cross country team is back in action tomorrow after competing in Pella last weekend, as they will race in the prestigious Waterworks Invite tomorrow in Fairfield.

Racing in Fairfield tomorrow will be Winfield-Mount Union, Wapello, Van Buren County, Pekin, Notre Dame, Lone Tree, Hillcrest Academy, Highland, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, Clear Creek-Amana, Chariton, Cardinal, Fort Madison, Keokuk, Mount Pleasant, Ottumwa and Washington.

Varsity racing will begin at 5:30 p.m. with the girls running first.

Boys’ will run at approximately 6:00 p.m.

Phyllis Agnes Pollpeter

Phyllis Agnes Pollpeter, 79, of West Point, Iowa, passed away at 5:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 8, 2020, at the West Point Care Center in West Point, Iowa.

Phyllis was born on September 20, 1940, in West Point, Iowa, the daughter of Stephen and Clara (Bentler) Pranger. On October 18, 1959, she married Donald Pollpeter at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in West Point, Iowa.

Survivors include her husband: Donald; seven children: Scott (Sandi) Pollpeter of Tampa, Florida; Diane (Joel) Thompson of Solon, Iowa; Michael (Teri) Pollpeter of Walnut Shade, Missouri; Roger Pollpeter of Anamosa, Iowa; Steven Pollpeter of Wever, Iowa; Brian (Jodi) Pollpeter of Lacey, Iowa and Dean (Amy) Pollpeter of Ankeny, Iowa; seventeen grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and one on the way; two sisters: Barb (Les) Groene of Donnellson, Iowa and Sandra (Dick) Philpott of Carlinville, Illinois; four brothers: Art (Mary Jo) Pranger of Trumbull, Connecticut, Ralph (Carol) Pranger of Clarksville, Tennessee; Norbert (Judy) Pranger of Davenport, Iowa and Maurice (Barb) Pranger of Blue Grass, Iowa. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one niece: Karen Brzostoski and one great nephew: Chris Thompson.

Phyllis was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church the Altar and Rosary Society of the church and a past state regent of the Daughter’s of Isabella. She helped Don on the farm and was a school bus driver for over thirty years. Phyllis enjoyed playing softball, traveling, dancing and spending time with family.

Friends may call after 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m. Thursday, September 10, 2020, at Schmitz Funeral Home in West Point .

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 11, 2020, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in West Point with Father Dennis Hoffman as celebrant.

Those attending are required to wear a mask and social distance.

A private family burial will follow the Mass of Christian Burial at Calvary Cemetery.

Memorials have been established in her memory to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or Alzheimer’s Association.

Martha Sharon Wilson

Martha Sharon Wilson, 77, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Monday, September 7, 2020, at her home in Mt. Pleasant.

Funeral Services will be held on Friday, September 11, 2020, at 2 p.m. at the Murphy Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant with Pastor Lawrence Manson officiating.  Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Thursday at the Murphy Funeral Home.  The family will not be present.  According to her wishes cremation will be accorded following the service.

Details of Jefferson County Chase

On September 6 at approximately 1 pm hours, a Jefferson County Deputy attempted to stop a vehicle on Highway 34 westbound at mile marker 213. The vehicle failed to stop for the deputy who had his fully marked patrol vehicle and all emergency lighting and siren activated.
The suspect vehicle exited the highway at exit 212, and proceeded south on Highway 1. The pursuit then went out onto county gravel roads and eventually back to Fairfield. The vehicle continued through Fairfield and into Leisure Living where the driver was apprehended.
Arrested was Phillip Morgan Argo Jr, 36 of Fairfield Iowa. He was charged with felony eluding and weapons charges, as well as numerous traffic offenses up to and including excessive speed, eluding, reckless driving and operating on a suspended driving license.
Argo is being held in the Jefferson County Jail on a $10,000.00 bond. Investigation continues and further felony weapons charges are pending.
Assisting the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was the Fairfield Police Department.
