Standoff in Mobile Home Park

Sunday at 1:15 am Mount Pleasant Police were called to the mobile home park at 200 South Street.  Reportedly, a woman ran into a neighbor’s mobile home and then was dragged back out by a man, later identified as Chadley Yeakley of Mount Pleasant.  Witnesses said the woman told them about being tied up by Yeakley.  Both the man and the woman were found in another mobile home.  Officers were unable to make contact so they entered the home where they spoke with Yeakley who was barricaded in a back bedroom with the victim.  Evidently, he had a knife and would not let the woman leave. Officers talked to Yeakley for about 90 minutes before he finally released the woman.  However, Yeakley refused to drop the knife and surrender.  Eventually, he did surrender peacefully and was taken to the Henry County Jail.  Yeakley is charged with domestic abuse involving display or use of a weapon, kidnapping, willful injury an possession of a firearm by a felon.

Investigation Continues into an Incident at MP Game

The investigation continues into an incident that occurred behind the bleachers at the Mount Pleasant Homecoming game.  Friday night at about 8:30 the police and Henry County Sheriff’s Department reserve deputies investigated a report that a male subject with either a pellet gun or a bb gun may have shot or shot at someone on the Mapleleaf Athletic Complex practice field.  Initially, it was reported that several people were hit and could positively identify the suspect.  However, after speaking to the witnesses officers were unable to find any actual victims.  The suspect identified by witnesses was verified by officers to be in another town at the time of the incident and at this time does not appear to have been involved.

Willis Goes Wild, Leads Washington to 41-27 “W”:

Washington quarterback Trashaun Willis accounted for six scores — three through the air and three on the ground — as the #6 Demons rolled past Mount Pleasant 41-27 at Mapleleaf Athletic Complex last Friday night, spoiling Mount Pleasant’s homecoming festivities.

The Demons were gifted with exquisite field position right out of the gates, as Panther quarterback Jack Johnson fumbled on the game’s first play from scrimmage, setting Washington up at the Panther 25-yard line.

Five plays later, Willis ran in his first score to give the Demons first blood.

Following a Panther punt, Willis led Washington on a 10-play, 76-yard march that was capped off by a 28-yard passing strike to Ethan Patterson, his first of two touchdown grabs in the first quarter.

Mount Pleasant clawed back into the game late into the second quarter on a Jack Johnson three-yard rushing touchdown that put the exclamation mark on an 11-play drive that took just over 7:00 off the clock, cutting the Demon lead to 21-7 at half.

Out of the break Washington grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck, as Trashaun Willis scampered in for a 30-yard rushing touchdown and found Spencer Sotelo for a 17-yard passing score giving the Demons a 34-7 advantage.

Mount Pleasant tried to rally, however.

The Panthers scored the game’s next 13 points on a Jack Johnson 54-yard run and a Brevin Wilson 29-yard touchdown reception.

But the Demons, to their credit, put the game on ice when Willis scampered in for his third rushing touchdown — this time from four yards out — giving Washington a 41-20 lead.

The Panthers added a late score on a Jack Johnson to Brennan Bender 51-yard score, but the Demons recovered the onside kick and were able to knee out the clock.

The loss dropped Mount Pleasant to 2-2 on the year, while Washington improved to 4-0.

The Panthers will regroup this week before traveling to Keokuk for a district matchup next Friday.

Kick-off is set for 7:30 p.m.

Other area scores last Friday night:

New London will square off with Winfield-Mount Union next Friday in what should be a very entertaining matchup between Henry County rivals.

WACO 44, Moravia 13

WACO snapped a two-game losing skid, as they cruised by Moravia last Friday night 44-13. The Warriors jumped out to a 25-0 halftime lead to improve their ledger to 2-2 on the season. WACO will battle Tri-County on the road next week Friday.

In the bracket round, Mount Pleasant drew Ottumwa and the Bulldogs earned 25-19 and 25-14 to knock the Panthers out.

Iowa Senators at Center of Debate over Justice Replacement

Grassley and Ernst at center of debate over replacing Ginsburg

The death of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has thrust Iowa’s U.S. Senators — both Republicans — into the spotlight. The Senate’s Republican leader tonight said there will be a vote this year on the person President Trump nominates to replace Ginsburg.

Earlier this summer, Senator Chuck Grassley said if there were a vacancy on the court, he would not recommend holding a committee hearing on a nominee. That would follow what happened in 2016. Grassley was chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee at the time and did not hold a hearing for President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee.

Senator Joni Ernst, who recently became a member of the Judiciary Committee, said in July the Republican-led senate should proceed with hearings if a vacancy occurred in 2020, even if President Trump loses the election.

Friday night, shortly after Ginsburg’s death was announced, Ernst’s 2020 re-election campaign sent an email with the subject line that said, “BREAKING: The future of the Supreme Court is on the line.” It sought donations to preserve what the email referred to as “Conservative values and Constitutional rights.” Ernst a few hours later issued a written statement saying the email “never should have gone out” and “though I never saw it, it was sent out under my name and I take responsibility. Tonight, my prayers are with the family of Justice Ginsburg.”

Ernst and many Iowa politicians, of both political parties, issued written statements Friday evening referring to Ginsburg as an icon. Grassley, who voted back in 1993 to confirm Ginsburg to the court, called her a “trailblazer” who “has left a remarkable imprint on our nation.” Republican Governor Kim Reynolds said Ginsburg’s life of service “deserves the utmost respect and admiration.”

Congresswoman Cindy Axne, a Democrat from West Des Moines, said Ginsburg was “a champion of progress and women’s rights unlike any other in our nation’s history.” Congresswoman Abby Finkenauer, a Democrat from Cedar Rapids, said the country “lost a hero, an icon and inspiration for millions of women and girls.” Congressman Dave Loebsack, a Democrat from Iowa City, said Ginsburg’s “voice will be truly missed.”

Theresa Greenfield, the Democrat challenging Ernst’s bid for a second term in the U.S. Senate, issued a written statement, calling Ginsburg “a tireless champion for civil rights and equality…Let’s work every day to honor her memory.”

Ashley Hinson of Cedar Rapids, the Republican candidate challenging Congresswoman Finkenauer, called Ginsburg a “giant” who “gave every little girl the belief that they, too, could be a supreme court justice.”

Former Congressman David Young of Van Meter, the Republican running against Congresswoman Axne this year, said he “marveled at the personal friendship” Ginsburg shared with the late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia and added: “We need more friendships like this bridging partisan divides.”
