Jerry Sevier

Jerry Taylor Sevier, 81, of Donnellson, Iowa, passed away at 5:34 p.m. Thursday, June 10, 2021, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.

He was born on August 29, 1939 in Bucklin, Missouri, the son of Russell and Dorothy (Burris) Sevier. On February 18, 1966, he married Marianne Heaton in Brookfield, Missouri.

He is survived by his wife of fifty-five years: Marianne; daughter: Jodie Sevier of Des Moines, Iowa; grandchildren: Samuel Yon and Ella Yon of Des Moines; two sisters: Joanne Sevier Teeter of Olathe, Kansas and Judy (Joe) Sevier Trueblood of Kansas City, Missouri; one brother: John “Robin” (Connie) Sevier of Brookfield, Missouri and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two infant children.

Jerry served in the United States Army from 1963 to 1965 being stationed in Germany for thirty-one months. He worked for the Santa Fe/Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad for forty years. Jerry was a member of Green Acres Golf Club. He enjoyed golfing, gardening and baseball. Jerry was an avid New York Yankee, Kansas City Royals and Kansas City Chiefs fan.

His body has been entrusted to Schmitz Funeral Home for cremation.

Friends may call after 12:00 noon Tuesday, June 15, 2021, at Schmitz Funeral Home in Donnellson, where the family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. that evening.

Burial will be held at a later date.

A memorial has been established in his memory for the Central Lee Foundation.

Marjory Lox

Marjory Marilyn Lox, 96, of New London, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, June 10, 2021 at her home.  She was born on December 30, 1924 in Chicago, Illinois; the only daughter of Roy and Jean Pearl Good Finley and sister to William Joseph Kalin (her best friend).

She worked at IRC in Burlington and married John Ellis Lox; he died March 27, 1993.

Survivors include three children, one granddaughter Lesley Lynn Stewart, who was like her own daughter; seven other grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren with another one on the way.

Marjory was an excellent cook.  Her passion was her dogs and she was never without at least one at all times.  She enjoyed many hours working in her yard with flowers and feeding and watching the birds.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 Monday at Oquawka Cemetery with Pastor David Mixon officiating.  A memorial has been established for New London Fire and Rescue. Michelle Singleton

Michelle “Shelley” Singleton, 68, of Wapello, IA, passed away on Wednesday, June 9, 2021 at her home.   Visitation for Dave and Shelley Singleton will begin at noon on Friday, June 18, 2021 at Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral & Cremation Services of Wapello.  The family will be present from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.  Private family burial will be at Mallory Cemetery at a later date.   In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the community of Wapello in memory of Dave and Shelley Singleton.     Sympathy notes may be left for the family at www.sandhfuneralservice.com.

Michelle West was born on October 16, 1952 in Burlington, the daughter of Ray and Dorothy (McCuen) Davis.  Shelley was a 1970 graduate of Wapello High School.   On July 7, 1973, she was united in marriage to David Singleton in Wapello.   Shelley worked as manager for Casey’s in Wapello for over 35 years.  In 2007, Shelley had a dream to begin Just 2 Moms, which Shelley and Jonie (Skip) Simmons began in 2008, working countless hours serving the community and giving to others.   Over the years at Casey’s, Shelley used her powers of persuasion to initiate several movements, such as School Supply and Hat and Coat Drives, a Fireman Appreciation Weekend and Walk The Block.  J2M donated countless hours and funds to the Ronald McDonald House, Dance Marathon and sponsored many cabins at the Heart Connections Kids Cancer Camp.  Shelley served behind the scenes of many events and organizations.  Anywhere and anytime that Shelley could lend a hand she was there.  She helped fill the Firefighter widow bags at Christmas, donated her time to VFW, local schools, cemetery association and anyone else in need.  Shelley was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan and held season tickets to the Iowa Football games for over 30 years.

Shelley will be deeply missed by her children, Shad (Angela) Singleton of Mora, Minnesota, Sara (Mike) Maddux of Wapello and Seth (Teilsen) Singleton of Wapello; grandchildren, Schae, Wyatt, Tate, Landry, Owen and Teagan and many brothers and sisters.

Shelley was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, David on November 29, 2020 and brothers, Russell “Buddy” West and Richard “Dick” West.

College Basketball: Iowa Lands Major Prep

Iowa City — Fran McCaffery and the Iowa men’s basketball program are making inroads on replenishing the cupboards and did so in a big way yesterday securing a commitment from Massachusetts prepster Dasonte Bowen.

Bowen is the top-ranked high school player in the Pilgrim State and is the No. 92 overall player nationally.

He chose Iowa over offers from Boston College, Northwestern and Maryland.

Prep Football: Winfield’s Buffington Formally Offered by Iowa

Winfield-Mount Union star Cam Buffington has been officially offered by the University of Iowa, the rising sophomore announced.

This is Buffington’s, who led the Wolves with 1,029 total yards and 19 touchdowns, first Division I offer.

The 6’3, 200-pounder is expected to play either running back or linebacker at the next level.

Prep Baseball: IHSAA Approves State Sites

IHSAA — For the first time since 2004, the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s summer baseball championships will be conducted at two separate sites with Carroll’s Merchants Park and the University of Iowa’s Duane Banks Field serving as hosts.

The 2021 IHSAA State Baseball Tournament is scheduled for July 26-31, with Class 2A and Class 1A in Carroll from July 26-29, and Class 4A and Class 3A in Iowa City from July 28-31.

Next month’s schedules and sites were approved by the Board of Control on Thursday. The one-year plans are pending formal approval by the City of Carroll and the University of Iowa.

Prep Softball: Mount Pleasant Falls in Two, West Burlington Cruises Past New London; Other Finals

Burlington 21, Mount Pleasant 1

Burlington 11, Mount Pleasant 1 

Burlington combined for 32 runs over two games, as the Mount Pleasant softball team was swept 21-1 and 11-1 yesterday at Mapleleaf Athletic Complex.

Emma Starr allowed nine runs — five earned — in her lone inning in the circle in game one.

Grace Kelley had a hit for the Panthers in the opener.

In game two, Madison Helling allowed eight earned in 4.1 innings as Burlington won 11-1.

Kelley had a double in game two with a run scored.

Mount Pleasant fell to 0-13.

West Burlington 10, New London 0 

Kylee Logan had three hits, including a double and a run batted in as West Burlington rolled to a 10-0 win over New London last night.

Lauren Summers was once again incredibly dominant in the circle, allowing two base runners — one hit and one walk — while striking out 12 over five scoreless frames.

Natalie Burden had the lone hit for New London.

Sophie Malott took the loss in the circle for the Tigers.

New London fell to 3-9.

Wapello 2, Louisa-Muscatine 1 

Toni Bohlen doubled and drove in one as Wapello stunned No. 3 (2A) Louisa-Muscatine 2-1 last night.

Aliyah Lolling worked seven innings allowing six hits and the lone run.

Wapello snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Falcons with the win, as they improved to 6-5.

Louisa-Muscatine fell to 6-3.

Winfield-Mount Union 7, Lone Tree 0 

Madie Anderson was up to her usual tricks, striking out thirteen hitters over seven innings as Winfield-Mount Union earned a 7-0 win over Lone Tree last night.

Anna Anderson had two hits and run batted in, while Emma Haines also had a two hit night.

The win propelled Winfield-Mount Union to 9-2.

Lone Tree fell to 7-6.

Burlington 14, Mount Pleasant 3 

Juan Reyes slugged a grand slam home run in game one, while pitching 6.2 innings striking out 12 in game two, as the Burlington Greyhound baseball team came into Mapleleaf and left with a sweep of the Panthers, winning 18-2 and 14-3.

Carter Amos was the losing pitcher in game one for Mount Pleasant, Jacob Zahner earned the win for Burlington.

Zahner went the distance allowing a singular base hit, while striking out six.

Burlington broke the game open in the top of the 5th, where they pushed across 10 runs to bring an 8-2 game to 18-2.

In game two, Reyes was again the star punching out 12 hitters.

Off to a rocky start in the first, yielding two runs on a base hit by Dalton Gardner, Reyes would settle down.

The fireballing right-hander set 12 in a row down in order and did not allow his next baserunner until the 5th inning.

Burlington used an eight-run 7th inning to pull away for the win.

Chase Williamson, Carter Amos and Jake Ensminger each scored a run for Mount Pleasant, who fell to 2-8.

Burlington improved to 7-2.

New London 16, West Burlington 0 

New London scored eight times in the second inning, as the Tigers stayed perfect with a 16-0 victory West Burlington last night.

New London were the beneficiary of 13 walks issued by Falcon pitching, while still belting out nine hits.

Josh Catala and Tucker Gibbar each had two hit evenings, while Carter Allen clubbed a two-run homer.

Josh Catala was the winning pitcher, working four innings allowing just one hit, walking two and striking out two.

New London improved to 7-0.

Van Buren 8, Notre Dame 6 

Van Buren held off a late rally by Notre Dame as the Warriors got back to .500 with an 8-6 over the Nikes last night.

The loss moved Notre Dame to 5-3.

Van Buren improved to 5-5.

Central Lee 9, Highland 8 

Highland made things interesting scoring four times in the bottom of the 7th, but Central Lee held on for a 9-8 win over the Huskies last night in a Super Conference clash.

Trevor McFarland had two hits and runs batted in for Highland.

Central Lee scored twice in the 1st and four times in the 2nd and at one point held a 6-0 lead.

The win upped Central Lee to 5-4.

Lone Tree 8, Winfield-Mount Union 7

Winfield-Mount Union jumped out to a 6-1 lead after one inning but could not capitalize, falling to Lone Tree 8-7 last night.

Trailing 7-5 in to the final inning, the Lions scored three runs to take the 8-7 advantage.

Tyler Bell had two hits and three runs batted in for Lone Tree.

Winfield-Mount Union dropped to 1-10.

Lone Tree improved to 4-5.

Mediapolis 9, Pekin 0 

Pekin saw Mediapolis score six times in the 2nd inning and add on three in the 6th, as the Bulldogs rolled past the Panthers for a 9-0 win.

Mediapolis has now won six out of the last seven tilts between clubs.

The Bulldogs got above .500 with the win, they’re now 6-5.

Pekin slumped to 5-5.
