New London Football

The New London Tigers and Moravia Mohawks went back-and-forth all night on Friday, but it was the Mohawks who bested the Tigers, 38 to 26. Moravia got the scoring going with a 24 yard pass from Shane Helmick to Riley Hawkins. The Tigers had a slow start offensively, but after a muff punt led to short field position for the Tigers Dom Lopez piled in for the 1 yard touchdown. Jackson McDaniel responded by taking the kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown, but Reen Seberg tied the game up at 12 with his own 1 yard touchdown.

Both teams scored a touchdown in the second quarter, as Lopez notched his second 1 yard touchdown of the game and Helmick connected with McDaniel for a 31 yard touchdown pass. Then everything grinded to a halt as the game was under a lightning delay for over an hour. When the game did resume neither offense could gain a rhythm until Seberg plunged into the endzone from 2 yards out to give the Tigers the 24-18 lead. The lead was short lived as 16 seconds later Hawkins had streaked his way to the endzone on a perfect throw from Helmick for the 65 yard equalizer. But the Tiger defense forced Helmick to commit an intentional grounding penalty in his own endzone resulting in a safety giving the Tigers the 26 to 24 lead heading into the 4th quarter.

However, they could not capitalize on the momentum and the long passes kept working for the Mohawks, as on 4th down and long, Helmick found Hawkins for the 3rd time and that gave Moravia a 32 to 26 lead after converting the only successful try of the game for either team. McDaniel would score again for the Mohawks from 20 yard out on a sweep to give us the final score 38 to 26.

Lopez and Seberg each had two rushing touchdowns and Boden Pickle and Trent Wilkerson each finished with a sack. The Tigers will get a week off as Calamus-Wheatland cancelled their Varsity season. They face off against Tri-County September 2nd at New London.
