High School Football

Mt. Pleasant will stay on the road to take on Keokuk this Friday, October 6th, at 7:30 pm. KILJ will be on the call with the pregame show at 7:15 pm. The Panthers are excited for the challenge ahead of them this week.

In other Class 3A District 4 matchups, Washington will host Assumption and Fort Madison will wrestle with Mt. Vernon at home.

Fairfield will attempt to bounce back this Friday against South Tama in a road matchup.

Mediapolis will host Davis County this Friday.

Columbus will hit the road to take on Van Buren County this Friday. 

Central Lee will take on Mid-Prairie at 7:30 pm for their Homecoming game.

Danville will host Lisbon this Friday in an attempt to extend their win streak to four games. 

#10 WACO will face off against English Valleys at 7 pm in a home game.

New London will compete against Moravia at 7 pm.

#1 Winfield-Mt. Union will be at home to face off against Mormon Trail this Friday.

High School Volleyball

Mt. Pleasant will be competing in the first round of the Southeast Conference Tournament tomorrow, October 3rd, at Fort Madison.

New London hosted their own tournament over the weekend with Winfield-Mt. Union, English Valleys, Louisa-Muscatine, and the Tigers competing in one pool; Burlington Notre Dame, #8 Mid-Prairie, Van Buren County, and #15 West Burlington facing off in the other pool. 

New London, Winfield-Mt. Union, and English Valleys all picked up wins against Louisa-Muscatine; however, these three proved to be evenly matched. Winfield-Mt. Union picked up a win after narrowly defeating English Valleys in the third set 15-12. New London fell to English Valleys after dropping the final two sets 21-12 and 15-6. Nevertheless, New London would force a tiebreaker after taking down the Wolves two sets to one by scores of 21-19, 9-21, and 15-9. The tiebreaker would not be enough for the Tigers as Winfield-Mt. Union won the pool and English Valleys moved on to the semifinals.

West Burlington went undefeated in pool play as the Falcons did not drop a set against Van Buren County, Burlington Notre Dame, or Mid-Prairie. The Golden Hawks were able to move on with sweeps over the Nikes and Warriors to finish with a 2-1 record. 

In the semifinals, West Burlington bounced English Valleys in straight sets. Winfield-Mt. Union battled with Mid-Prairie, but the Golden Hawks would move on, winning 21-19 and 21-7. Audrie Gipple tallied 19 kills, Aurie Meeker had 22 assists and seven aces, Jessi Renken notched 21 assists, and Pacey Schlee was efficient from the service line with eight aces for the Wolves. 

In the championship game, Mid-Prairie was ready and downed the Falcons in a thrilling two sets to one win. Harper Pacha led the Golden Hawks with 17 kills. 

New London will be on the road tonight to face off against Cardinal.

West Burlington will host Burlington Notre Dame tomorrow.

WACO will travel to take on Winfield-Mt. Union tomorrow at 7:30 pm.

Van Buren County will take on Mediapolis tomorrow.

#3 Holy Trinity Catholic will stay on the road to face off against Central Lee tomorrow.

Danville will face off against Lone Tree tonight.

Cross Country

Mt. Pleasant, Mediapolis, and Danville will compete in a meet today hosted by Hillcrest Academy. 

The Southeast Iowa Super Conference (SEISC) meet will be run on October 5th. 

College Football

The University of Iowa battled back in the second half, scoring 16 unanswered points to defeat Michigan State 26-16 for their first Big Ten win of the season. Erick All caught four passes for 67 yards and a score in the winning effort. The biggest takeaway of the game for the Hawkeyes, was a left leg injury suffered by starting quarterback Cade McNamara, who did not return. The Hawkeyes will celebrate Homecoming this Saturday, October 7th, against Purdue. 

Iowa State University could not keep up with #12 Oklahoma’s fast-paced offense as the Cyclones fell 50-20. Rocco Becht threw for 188 yards and two touchdowns. Iowa State University will take on TCU in a home game this Saturday.

This Day in Sports History

1920 – The Cincinnati Reds and the Pittsburgh Pirates play the only true triple header in MLB history and the first of the 20th century. The Reds win the first two games, 13-4 and 7-3; but, the Pirates avoid the sweep in the finale, 6-0.

1994 – Head coach Don Shula led Miami past Cincinnati for a 23-7 Dolphin victory. The win came against Bengals Head Coach head coach, his son, David Shula in the first-ever NFL meeting between father and son.

2016 – Veteran broadcaster Vin Scully calls his final Los Angeles Dodgers game (7-1 loss in San Francisco) after a record 67 MLB seasons.

Man Turns Himself In After Domestic Assault

Descom was alerted of a domestic assault issue at approximately 12:36pm on September 29th. A man with outstanding warrants called Descom stating that he had assaulted his girlfriend. Shortly after the phone call, a female checked in to the Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center with injuries consistent to the report.

The man, identified as Travis Entrenkin, was near the river front and was taking into custody and transported to SEIRMC for evaluation. During the investigation, detectives found that the assault had occurred in the 1100 block of Washington Street.

The facts and circumstances in this case are still under investigation.

Travis Enktrenkin, age 36 was arrested on outstanding warrants, False Imprisonment, Willful Injury and Aggravated Domestic Assault.

All suspects are innocent until proven guilty.

1000 Friends of Iowa Nomination for Best Development Awards Program

1000 Friends of Iowa, a statewide nonprofit organization focused on promoting responsible land use and sustainability, has opened the nomination period for its Best Development Awards Program.

The awards program, in its 22nd year, recognizes Iowa’s thoughtfully considered projects and programs that connect building, land, natural resources, development, positive community impact, and quality of life as well as the organizations and individuals responsible for those projects and programs. With a mission focused on responsible land use, 1000 Friends of Iowa promotes smart planning principles that help achieve thriving communities. There is a $25 fee to submit a nomination, and anyone can nominate (or self-nominate). The nomination deadline is November 17, 2023.

Winners will be chosen by independent jurors in December, and an awards ceremony is slated to occur over the lunch hour on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, for the following categories:

Announced in the Capitol Rotunda during the state’s legislative session, the awards ceremony is a unique opportunity to let lawmakers know the positive impact that sustainable practices have on Iowa’s communities. Lawrence “Larry” Strayer

Lawrence “Larry” P. Strayer, 83, of River Hills Village in Keokuk formerly of Donnellson, passed away at 3:55 a.m. Saturday, September 30, 2023 at River Hills Village in Keokuk.

He was born on July 11, 1940 the son of Harry B. and Agnes E. (Pranger) Strayer. On February 29, 1964, he married Pauline Wittman in Kittery, Maine.

Survivors include his wife Pauline; one daughter Laura (Richard) Lee Gilkerson of Albuquerque, New Mexico; one son Elliott John (Chanteé) Strayer of Silverdale, Washington; four grandchildren: Elizabeth (Daniel) Parks, Kelly Gilkerson (John Craig), Alexander Strayer, and Zachary Strayer; one great grandson Damien Webber; one sister Rosanna (Gerald) Smith of Fort Madison, Iowa; two brothers: David (Andrea) Strayer of Donnellson and James (Sue) Strayer of Donnellson; two sisters-in-law Alice Strayer of Donnellson and Arlene Gray of Jerome, Idaho. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother Robert.

Larry was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point. He retired from Baltimore Gas and Electric after 25 years of service as a shift supervisor, then worked for Ship Interiors for 6 years, when he moved back to Donnellson he worked for Schlicher Well Company and Schmitz Funeral Home. He served in the United States Navy for eight years working on nuclear submarines. He was a member of West Point Knights of Columbus where he was a Grand Night, Gallitzin Assembly fourth Degree Nights of Columbus, Donnellson American Legion, was active with the Boy Scouts where he earned Scout Master of the year at National Capital Area Boy Scouts, and assisted Pauline with Tack and Hammer Upholstery Service. Larry enjoyed square dancing, camping, and wintering in the Arizona for thirteen years following retirement.

A visitation will begin at 12:00 noon, Wednesday, October 4, 2023 at Schmitz Funeral Home in Donnellson, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A Knights of Columbus Rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 p.m. Thursday, October 5, 2023 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point with Father Dan Dorau as celebrant.

Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, West Point.

Robert Krieger

Robert W. “Bob” Krieger, 42, of Mt. Pleasant, died Thursday, September 21, 2023 at his residence.

A memorial visitation will be held from 2-5 PM on Wednesday, October 4, 2023 in the Upper Fireside Room of the First United Methodist Church, 309 North Main Street., Mt. Pleasant.

Robert Warren “Bob” Krieger was born December 15, 1980 in Mt. Pleasant. He was the son of Jerry Raymond and Ellen Sue (Housel) Krieger. Bob was baptized at First United Methodist Church. He was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant Community High School.

Bob work a number of years for Batey’s Sawmill. Bob loved to camp, most especially down on the Skunk River, where he especially enjoyed rock hunting and fishing for catfish. He adored his dogs and liked to ride on his 4-wheeler. Bob was known for his “Stick and Stump Foundation” stories which he shared with his friends, especially down on the Skunk River.

Survivors include a daughter, Jeannie Morris and special friend Matthew Thorn of LeRoy, MN; his mother, Ellen Krieger of Mt. Pleasant; a half brother and his wife, Curt and Elizabeth Krieger of Mt. Pleasant. Bob is also survived by several relatives and friends. At the time of his death, Bob was joyously expecting the birth of his first grandchild.

Bob’s father, Jerry, precedes him in death.

 

Vicky Mehaffy

Vicky Mehaffy, 68, of Mount Pleasant, died Friday, September 29, 2023, at Savannah Heights in Mount Pleasant.

Vicky was born April 16, 1955, in Oakland, California, the daughter of Rodney and Darlene (Alter) Mehaffy. The Mehaffy family moved to Mount Pleasant when Vicky was young. She attended Lincoln Elementary and Hope Haven. Vicky enjoyed playing cards, games, BINGO, listening to books, coloring and making crafts. She also loved cowboy movies and TV shows. Vicky lived a wonderful life and was loved by many.

Vicky is survived by her sister and her husband Tammy and Doug Mulford of Mount Pleasant; brother-in-law Dan McCabe of Mount Pleasant; four nephews, Matthew McCabe, Michael McCabe, Jordan Mulford, Logan Mulford; aunt and uncle Beverly and Shorty Mullen of Mount Pleasant. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Pam McCabe.

 

According to her wishes her body has been cremated and a private family inurnment will be held in the Forest Home Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to Hope Haven in Burlington, Iowa. The Olson-Powell Chapel & Crematory is caring for Vicky and her family. Panther Marching Band Season Marches Along After Two Competitions on Saturday

The Mt. Pleasant Panther Marching Band fought through the heat wave on Saturday as they battled bravely in Cedar Rapids. With temperatures reaching the 90s, students were told to march in their band t-shirts for concern that the heat might overwhelm.

The highschoolers traveled to the Bands Across the Prairie event where they placed fourth out of nine bands in Class 3A in the morning. Taking a quick trip across town, they took on six other schools in 3A at the Kingston Stadium at the 5 Seasons Marching Invitational. They finished 3rd.

Once again, the color guard was recognized by judges as the best in their class at both competitions. They were awarded the caption of Best Color Guard and has been honored with that at all three of their events this season.

The Mt. Pleasant High school marching band will travel to Kahoka, Missouri, for the 32nd Annual Clark County Parade of Champions on October 7th.
