High School Track and Field

Day one of the 2026 Iowa High School State Track and Field championships is in the books and southeast Iowa already collected six gold medals and a couple other podium finishes. Here’s a look at the highlights.

Class 1A led us off yesterday and it was the field events that captured fire first. Pekin’s Anna Hadley reclaimed her shot put title with a toss of 43 feet and 9.75 inches. In the boys’ long jump, New London’s London Franklin flew on his last attempt to a personal best 22 feet and 4.25 inches to cement his first individual gold medal–he would later go on to qualify for the 100-meter dash finals with the 2nd fastest time of the heat. WACO’s Hayden Shelman would take 4th place in the long jump with a leap of 20 feet and 7 inches.

The girls’ 3000-meter run has a new state meet record for Class 1A after Chloe Glosser of Pekin raced to a time of 9 minutes and 37 seconds, which was nearly three-seconds faster than the old record and 24 seconds faster than second place. The two victories have Pekin sitting atop the standings.

The WACO girls’ and boys’ teams had their 4×800 meter relay teams finish inside the top 8 with the girls’ team of Carlee Lunsford, Macie Carter, Aliya Graber, and Josie Dykstra taking 4th place, while the quad of Locken Henderson, Garrett Landau, Gavin Salgel, and Jude Dykstra captured 7th place.

Lastly, for Class 1A, Lincoln Bainbridge of Van Buren County nabbed the state championship in the boys’ 400-meter dash with a time of 48.08 seconds.

Classes 2A and 3A took over for the early afternoon and evening schedule and the throwing events were dominated by the Southeast Conference. Burlington’s Kylee Hill grabbed her first gold medal in the girls’ Class 3A discus, unfurling a throw of 151 feet and 3 inches. Greyson Hartman of Washington would follow it up in the boys’ Class 3A discus event, getting a mark of 189 feet and 5 inches, which was nearly 19 feet better than second place for the state championship.

Fairfield’s Eli Zillman was one failed jump away from at least tying for the boys’ Class 3A high jump title, but the Trojan settled for silver at 6 feet and 7 inches.

In the running events, Columbus’ boys’ shuttle hurdle team finished in 6th place to qualify for the Class 2A finals. Simon Wendel of Mediapolis paced his way to a silver medal time of 9 minutes and 25 seconds in the boys’ Class 2A 3200-meter run. Burlington’s Mylee Stiefel, West Burlington/Notre Dame’s Landry Haberichter, and Keokuk’s Ryan Bair each qualified for the 100 and 200-meter dash finals in their respective classes. Lamar Ceant of Columbus will join Haberichter in the boys’ Class 2A 200-meter dash finals, while Washington’s Jaedyn Moore will partake in the girls’ Class 3A 100-meter dash finals. Washington’s 4×800 meter relay squad took 7th place in the boys’ Class 3A division. Lastly, Mt. 2026 Iowa High School State Track and Field Championships: Burlington’s Kylee Hill and Washington’s Greyson Hartman Flex Muscles for Gold in the Throwing Events

Des Moines, IA- Day one of the 2026 Iowa High School State Track and Field Championships is in the books after Classes 2A and 3A rounded out the schedule. For southeast Iowa, the strength has always been in the throwing events, which earned two state championships for our local athletes.

Field Events (2 pm)

To lead off the field events, Bella Forbes of Columbus heaved the shot put 35 feet and 8.75 inches to finish in 14th in the girls’ Class 2A division.

She had won it on her very first throw of the day; Burlington’s Kylee Hill won the girls’ Class 3A discus gold medal for the first time in her career, as her furthest throw went 151 feet and 3 inches. This earned the Grayhound 10 points, as she looks to add another 10 when she tries for the three-peat in the shot-put ring.

Fairfield’s Elyse Setterstrom claimed 18th place with a toss of 113 feet and 9 inches.

Over in the boys’ long jump for Class 2A, Mediapolis’ Truett Larson finished in 12th place with a mark of 20 feet and 1.5 inches, while Tyson Corneille of Columbus took 18th place with a leap of 19 feet and 5.5 inches.

In heart-breaking fashion, Eli Zillman of Fairfield was unable to reclaim the gold medal for the boys’ Class 3A high jump as his one fail on 6 feet and 5 inches proved to be the tiebreaker with Eli Patterson of Benton for the state championship. Still, the Trojan nabbed eight points.

Also grabbing points was Fort Madison’s Nolan Guzman, as the senior leapt 6 feet and 3 inches for 7th place and two points.

Field Events (4:30 pm)

Greyson Hartman of Washington did not enter as the favorite in the boys’ Class 3A division for discus after a subpar day—his standards—at the state qualifier put him at the third furthest throw. Just like Hill, Hartman had won it on his first throw but added on by uncorking a throw 189 feet and 5 inches to win by nearly 19 feet. This earned the Demon 10 points with a chance to grab more tomorrow in the shot put.

Urijah Brooks of Fort Madison snatched 19th place with a throw of 142 feet and 6 inches.

Columbus’ Ella Howell earned 22nd place in the girls’ Class 2A long jump with a mark of 14 feet and 10 inches.

For the final field event of the day, Lilan Mennen cleared 5 feet and 2 inches for 9th place, while Kylee Hoard of Keokuk took off for 5 feet-even for 14th place in the girls’ Class 3A high jump.

Running Events

The Class 2A boys’ shuttle hurdle relay prelims led off the running events for the afternoon slate and the squad of Tyson Kaalberg, Alexander Rees, Tyson Corneille, and Lamar Ceant managed a 6th place time of 1 minute and 0.74 seconds to advance to the finals. The Wildcats will run on Saturday at 12:18 pm.

Over in Class 3A for the boys’ teams, Mt. Pleasant with the quad of Kayle Brown, Caleb Shepherd, Keegan Heaton, and Kaden Schadt took 19th place with a time of 1 minute and 2 seconds, while Burlington finished in 21st place a second behind with the team of Zech Hart, Justin Hudley, Liam Enger, and Cj Owens.

The Class 3A girls’ 3000-meter run pinned a trio from the Southeast Conference (SEC) against one another and Fort Madison’s Avery Rump won the conference duel and nabbed three points for the Bloodhounds with a personal best time of 10 minutes and 4 seconds.

Washington’s Emma Horak and Mt. Pleasant’s Quintrie Lee finished in 18th and 19th place, respectively, with times of 11 minutes and 2 seconds and 11 minutes and 7 seconds.

Mediapolis’ Simon Wendel nearly ran down Emerson Vokes of Grundy Center, but the Bulldog will be happy taking the silver medal in the Class 2A boys’ 3200-meter run with a time of 9 minutes and 25 seconds, which was a personal best.

For Class 3A, Silas Hulett of Mt. Pleasant was the only local competitor racing, and the Panther paced his way to a personal best time of 9 minutes and 45 seconds, which was good enough for 12th place.

In her return to the Blue Oval, Burlington’s Mylee Stiefel dashed her way to the finals with the 4th fastest time in the girls’ Class 3A 200-meter with a mark of 24.9 seconds. Falling just outside of the top 10 was Jaedyn Moore of Washington with a time of 25.25 seconds. Stiefel will run at 2:25 pm on Saturday.

It will be a pair of qualifiers in the boys’ Class 2A 200-meter dash prelims as Ceant of Columbus takes 5th with a time of 22.02 seconds, followed closely by West Burlington/Notre Dame’s Landry Haberichter time of 22.03 seconds, which put him in 6th place. They will run on Saturday at 2:33 pm.

Keokuk’s Ryan Bair turned in the fastest time in the boys’ Class 3A 200-meter dash prelims with a mark of 21.82 seconds, moving him on to the finals on Saturday. Keshawn Wyldon of Burlington finished in 16th place with a time of 22.47 seconds. The finals will be run at 2:35 pm on Saturday.

The Mediapolis girls’ team of Bryn Wright, Gracie Beschomer, Evie Schmidgall, and Avery Dietz snatched 15th place in the Class 2A 4×800 meter relay with a time of 9 minutes and 59 seconds.

In the Class 3A side of the race, Fort Madison’s quad of McKayla Schinstock, Mara Smith, Avery Rump, and Addison Rump took 20th place with a time of 10 minutes and 2 seconds.

In the boys’ Class 2A 4×800 meter relay, Mediapolis squad of Lane Rigdon, Lucas Egan, Will Schmidgall, and Wendel led our local pack with a time of 8 minutes and 21 seconds for 14th place. West Burlington/Notre Dame’s quad of Michael Hadden, Case Johannsen, Prior Bowen, and Cavin Denney and Columbus’ team of Victor Tovar, Ryan Villa, Kevin Villa, and Cade Storm finished in 23rd and 24th place, respectively.

For the boys’ teams in Class 3A, Washington’s team of Ethan Hotchkiss, Sawyer Tschantz, Parker Tschantz, and Andrew Rees managed to grab two points with a 7th place time of 8 minutes and 2 seconds. Fort Madison squad of Nolan Guzman, Mason McLey, Henry Ireland, and Riley Tripp finished just outside of scoring with a 9th place finish of 8 minutes and 5 seconds.

Stiefel of Burlington will be busy on Saturday after qualifying for the girls’ Class 3A 100-meter dash finals with the 2nd best time of 12.16 seconds. Joining her will be Washington’s Moore as she tabbed the 8th fastest time of 12.47 seconds. Mt. Pleasant’s Alex Scott nabbed 11th place with a mark of 12.59 seconds. The finals will be run on Saturday at 1 pm.

West Burlington/Notre Dame’s Landry Haberichter flew to the time of 10.94 seconds in the boys’ Class 2A 100-meter dash prelims, taking 4th place and advancing to the finals. Dominic Garcia of Columbus claimed 21st place with a time of 11.45 seconds. He will run at 1:08 pm on Saturday.

Keokuk’s Ryan Bair will again show off his speed on Saturday after qualifying for the boys’ Class 3A 100-meter dash after turning in the 3rd fastest time of 10.88 seconds. His teammate, Kurt Joy, took 16th place with a time of 11.2 seconds. He will run at 1:10 pm on Saturday.

In the girls’ 400-meter dash, Ella Howell of Columbus earned 10th place with a personal best time of 59.91 seconds.

Mt. Pleasant’s Avery Fedler lived up to the hype, as the freshman grabbed four points and 5th place with a time of 57.56 seconds in the Class 3A 400-meter dash. Charley Huebner of Fort Madison finished in 12th place with a time of 59.76 seconds.

2026 Iowa High School State Track and Field: Day One Results for Class 1A Yields Four State Champions

Des Moines, IA- Day one of the 2026 Iowa High School State Track and Field Championships is underway and Classes 1A and 4A led off the day with the morning and early afternoon schedule. For the Class 1A girls’ teams, Pekin sprinted out of the starters gate to take an early lead on points.

Field Events (9 am)

In the first field event of the day, Pekin’s Anna Hadley was looking to reclaim her title in the girls’ shot put after winning her sophomore season and getting 6th last year. In the first flight, Kendra Schultz of Pekin finished in 24th place with a toss of 30 feet and 6.25 inches, while Chloe Sexton of Highland grabbed 12th place with a heave of 33 feet and 8.75 inches.

Hadley put herself in a great position to reclaim her gold medal after her toss of 43 feet and 1 inch put her almost three feet ahead of second place after the first three throws. In the finals, Hadley would add on to her distance by throwing the shot 43 feet and 9.75 inches for her second state championship in the shot put.

A trio from the Southeast Iowa Super Conference competed in the boys’ Long Jump Thursday morning and two of them advanced to the finals. Logan Franklin of New London got a mark of 19 feet and 8.25 for 14th place.

Out of his first three jumps, WACO’s Hayden Shelman broke the 20-foot barrier twice, landing at 20 feet and 7 inches on his second jump, locking him at 3rd place entering the finals. On top of the rankings was London Franklin from New London after getting a mark of 21 feet and 11 inches on his first jump of the day.

The Tiger entered as the favorite, as the jump hit Iowa Valley’s Nolan Kriegel’s personal best from the season, but a lot can happen in the finals. It looked like it would be a possibility after Kriegel landed just two inches short of Franklin’s mark on his first jump of the finals.

Yet, the Tiger would unfurl his personal best leap of 22 feet and 4.25 inches to secure the gold medal and 10 points towards New London’s team total. Shelman would finish in 4th place with his second jump of 20 feet and 7 inches being his best of the day, giving five points to WACO.

Field Events (11:30 am)

Winfield-Mt. Union’s Colin Anderson nearly found his way into the finals, but the Wolve took home 10th place with a heave of 47 feet and 1 inch in the boys’ shot put.

In the girls’ long jump, Alexa Hahn of Highland secured a point for the Huskies after leaping 16 feet and 3.5 inches for an 8th place finish.

The Girls’ Shuttle Hurdle prelims started off the day for the running events and the Pekin squad of Reece Brisby, Abby Guise, Carlie Gambell, and Paislee Coleman finished in 22nd place with a time of 1 minute and 14 seconds.

The Girls’ 3000-meter run will have a new state meet record after Pekin’s Chloe Glosser destroyed the competition, turning in a time of 9 minutes and 37 seconds, which was nearly three seconds faster than the record and 24 seconds faster than second place. Her victory gave the Panthers 20 points after only two scored events.

Marie Yoder of Hillcrest Academy took 23rd place with a mark of 11 minutes and 39 seconds.

As the lone runner from southeast Iowa in the boys’ 3200-meter run, Van Buren County’s Landry Loeffler scored a personal best time with a mark of 10 minutes and 2 seconds, as the Warrior claimed 16th place.

In the girls’ 200-meter dash prelims, Rya Scott of Hillcrest Academy generated a 14th place time of 26.54 seconds. On the boys’ side of the 200-meter dash prelims, WACO’s Hayden Shelman, in his second event of the day, finished in 16th place with a time of 22.83 seconds, which was a personal best.

WACO added five points to their team total after the quad of Carlee Lunsford, Macie Carter, Aliya Graber, and Josie Dykstra snatched 4th place in the girls’ 4×800-meter relay with a mark of 9 minutes and 51 seconds, which was a season best time.

Van Buren County’s team of Rory Philips, Rylee Philips, Gabby Titus, and Kayley Snowgren rounded out the top 10 with a time of 10 minutes and 10 seconds.

In the boys’ 4×800-meter relay, the team of Mason Dahlstrom, Cody Silvers, Cole Millikin, and Lane Fariss of Pekin turned in an 11th place time of 8 minutes and 21 seconds, while WACO’s squad of Locken Henderson, Garrett Landau, Gavin Slagel, and Jude Dykstra captured 7th place and two points with a mark of 8 minutes and 12 seconds.

HCHC Foundation Now Partnering With Great River Health Foundation

The Henry County Health Center Foundation and Great River Health Foundation have formalized a new partnership aimed at strengthening healthcare philanthropy across Southeast Iowa while keeping local control and donor intent at the forefront.

The two organizations signed a Memorandum of Understanding during a ceremony held May 12th. Leaders from both Foundations say the agreement creates a collaborative, team-based approach to fundraising and donor engagement that will help support patients, providers, and healthcare services throughout the region.

Officials emphasized the agreement is not a merger. Each Foundation will continue operating with its own board of directors, donor relationships, and local oversight of funds. Donations raised in Henry County will continue to support the local hospital campus and community healthcare needs.

Jason Hutcheson, Vice President of Foundation for Great River Health, says the collaboration will help better share the impact donor dollars have on patients across Southeast Iowa. Henry County Health Center Foundation Board Chair Jan Towne called the agreement a thoughtful and intentional partnership that strengthens both organizations while honoring their unique missions.

The partnership includes a 24-month implementation and evaluation period. During that time, the Foundations will align planning, reporting, and donor engagement practices while maintaining strong local community connections.

Both organizations will continue hosting fundraising events throughout the year. The Henry County Health Center Foundation plans to hold its annual Dueling Pianos event this fall, while the Great River Health Foundation continues its Golf Classic in June and Night of Dreams Gala in November.

Mount Pleasant Man Charged Following Alleged Assault of Pregnant Woman

A Mount Pleasant man is facing felony and misdemeanor charges following a domestic assault investigation early Saturday morning.

According to court documents, officers with the Mount Pleasant Police Department responded at approximately 2:51 a.m. on May 16 to an apartment at 709 South Main Street after receiving a 911 hang-up call.

When officers arrived, they reportedly encountered juveniles outside the apartment before making contact with a visibly pregnant woman inside the residence. Police say the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Gary Jerome Stuart Jr. of Mount Pleasant, had left the residence before officers arrived.

According to investigators, the woman became emotional while speaking with officers and stated Stuart assaulted her during an argument that escalated into a physical altercation. Court records allege Stuart struck the woman on the left side of the face, grabbed her by the face, and threw her to the ground, leaving visible marks on her face and neck area.

Authorities further allege Stuart stomped and kicked the woman in the stomach while she was on the ground. Officers documented what were described as forming marks on her stomach. A juvenile witness reportedly told investigators she heard the woman yelling for Stuart to stop kicking and stomping her stomach.

Court documents also state the woman attempted to call emergency services during the incident, but Stuart allegedly tried to take her phone to prevent the call.

The woman was privately transported from the scene for medical treatment. Police later located Stuart at the residence and took him into custody. According to court records, Stuart denied many of the allegations but admitted to grabbing the woman’s face and shoving her after she struck him.

Stuart has been charged with domestic abuse assault of a pregnant person with intent to inflict serious injury, a felony, and obstruction of emergency communications, a serious misdemeanor. A no-contact order was requested for the woman and three juveniles listed in the report. Health and Human Services was also notified of the incident.
