The Iowa Board of Medicine has revoked the medical license of a former physician who previously practiced in southeast Iowa after disciplinary action stemming from allegations involving juvenile patients in California.
According to the Iowa Board of Medicine, Dr. Najeeb Khalil Ahmed Ansari violated state regulations by failing to report disciplinary action taken against him in California and by failing to cooperate with Iowa’s investigation. The board also found he violated professional standards of medical practice.
Board records show Ansari was first licensed to practice medicine in Iowa in 2019, and federal records indicate he worked as a pediatrician at Ottumwa Regional Health Center. His Iowa medical license expired in January 2022.
California medical regulators alleged that while working as a pediatrician in Fresno in October 2020, Ansari engaged in inappropriate conduct during examinations involving multiple female patients between the ages of 11 and 17. Rather than contest the allegations, Ansari agreed to surrender his California physician’s license as part of a settlement. He also agreed to pay more than $131,000 to cover the state’s investigative costs before any future application for reinstatement.
The Iowa Board of Medicine determined that Ansari’s conduct in California warranted revocation of his Iowa medical license.
Separately, Ansari is also the subject of a federal lawsuit filed by his malpractice insurance company. The insurer is seeking a court ruling that it is not required to provide coverage for claims brought by one of the former patients and by the California clinic where Ansari worked. Court records indicate Ansari has not responded to the lawsuit, and a federal judge has warned that a default judgment could be entered if no response is filed by early August.
The Iowa Capital Dispatch reports it was unable to reach Ansari for comment.
