City of West Point Partnering With Lee County Sheriff’s Office

The City of West Point will temporarily contract with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office for police services after the resignation of Interim Police Chief Jackson Jones.

The City Council agreed to move forward with a month-to-month agreement beginning Aug. 1 at a cost of $7,000 per month. The arrangement comes after Donnellson decided to delay discussions about renewing a shared police services agreement until December.

Under the agreement, the Sheriff’s Office will respond to calls for service, provide patrols, event coverage, detective and K-9 support, and other specialized law enforcement services. Sheriff Elliott Vandenberg also says four deputies will be assigned to West Point during the upcoming Sweet Corn Festival.
