A newly completed housing assessment estimates Lee County could be approximately 500 homes short of what it will need over the next decade.
The assessment identified shortages involving entry-level homes, quality rental properties, senior housing and homes for young families. Aging properties, high repair and demolition costs and limited new construction have also reduced the number of homes ready for residents.
The shortage is affecting workforce recruitment. Some prospective employees have been unable to find suitable housing within Lee County, leading them to commute or accept employment elsewhere.
Focus groups are expected to begin meeting in September to consider possible incentives and strategies for new construction, rehabilitation of existing properties and removal of buildings that cannot be repaired.
