Winfield-Mt. Union will compete against New London at home at 7 pm tonight. Wolves head coach Scott McCarty talked about what he’s hoping to see from his squad tonight,

“I was just talking to a coach just a little bit ago about how it’s gonna be good to get your guys on film against somebody else. You know, can we hit somebody else? Can we block them? You know, where’s our athleticism based against opponents and those things? And you know how your guys shape up against your guys. So it’ll be a good measuring stick as we go forward. And even as coaches, it’s good to start calling things, you know, under fire and situationally as opposed to just that you have a script of plays and you go from there. And you know, you try and mimic situations and practice and do those things, right? But you can’t always crank up the intensity as needed. So it’ll be good for us. You know, we’ll get some varsity guys, some reps. We’ll get JV guys some reps and go from there. You know, I’m super appreciative of New London. You know, they’re playing a JV only schedule, but they’re coming over and they’re gonna scrimmage with us. And you know, both teams are gonna help each other out. We’ll do some 11 man stuff for them and they’ll do some eight man stuff for us. And by the end of the night, hopefully both teams are healthy and we’re better than when we started.”

Meet the Players Night

Meet the Panthers will be held tonight at the Mapleleaf Athletic Complex starting at 6:30 pm with a Booster Club Announcement. Teams will be introduced after the update with cross country leading the pack followed by girls’ tennis, football, volleyball, and cheerleading. The cheerleaders will perform at 6:50 pm and the football team will scrimmage Danville at 7 pm.

Panther cross country has had at least one runner qualify for state in three of the last four years. Girls’ head coach Lyle Murray discussed how that has influenced competition amongst the team,

“Yeah, you know, and I think they feed off each other a little bit. You know, there’s always somebody to work out with, which is good on both sides. Yeah, you know, we’ve got a freshman who’s coming up. She’s got some promise. And then our returners, you know, and we’ve got Monroe James who’s coming back for her senior year. So, yeah, we should have a very solid team.
