The Iowa Track Coaches Association released their preseason individual and team rankings for the upcoming 2026 season and a pair of teams and individuals found a spot inside the top 10 for their respective classes.
In Class 1A, the Southeast Iowa Super Conference (SEISC) has a pair of frontrunners with the Columbus boys’ team being ranked #3 and the Van Buren County girls’ team getting slotted in at #5. Both teams rely on their consistency, as the Warriors will attempt to repeat as conference champions, while the Wildcats expect to return their entire roster that finished 6th at state last year.
The Van Buren County boys’ team will have to replace Lincoln Bainbridge, but the team also featured four underclassmen that ran at state last year, resulting in the Warriors being placed at #16 as a team.
Individually, Josie Dykstra of WACO found a spot at #10 and Columbus’ Iris Garza earned a #17 ranking. Both finished within the top 30 at state last year.
For Class 2A, #10 Will Schmidgall will look to lead #16 Mediapolis this year, as the Bulldogs look to improve upon their 13th place team finish at state a year ago. Schmidgall took 17th place at state last year, as the senior will be flanked by three other runners that turned in sub-19:30 times.
On the girls’ side, Notre Dame/West Burlington’s Hannah Ritter will start the year as the #27 runner in the poll. As a freshman, Ritter grabbed 39th place at state with a mark of 20 minutes and 47 seconds.
Lastly in Class 3A, Avery Fedler of Mt. Pleasant was the lone runner from the Southeast Conference (SEC) to be ranked in the preseason, as she slotted in at #16. Fedler claimed 24th place at state along with gold at the SEC meet. Panther girls’ head coach Lyle Murray believes his team can turn an individual title into a team title this year,
“Our goal, as always, is to compete for the conference title. You know, it doesn’t matter who we have on our team. I tell them that’s our goal, and we always try to do our best. But I think this year is, you know, we definitely have a better chance than we have in the last couple years.”
The next round of rankings will be released on August 31st.
