The Fairfield City Council has approved a moratorium on data-center development within the city.
Council members voted 6-0 Monday night to approve the ordinance and waived its second and third readings.
The temporary pause gives Fairfield time to study data-center development and consider appropriate regulations before projects are allowed to move forward.
The city’s action is separate from a data-center ordinance and one-year moratorium previously approved by the Jefferson County Board of Supervisors. The county’s action applies to areas under county jurisdiction, while Fairfield’s moratorium applies within the city.
Data centers have drawn attention because of their potential effects on land use, electrical demand, water consumption and nearby properties.
