Girls’ Track: Panthers, Pekin Soar to Falcon Relay Win

West Burlington — For the first real time in 2021, southeast Iowa caught a glimpse at how good Scott Lamm’s Mount Pleasant Panther girls’ track team might be.

Mount Pleasant throttled the field — and host West Burlington/Notre Dame — tallying up 143.5 points en route to a team victory at yesterday’s Falcons Relays at West Burlington High School.

Panther long distance star Abby Blint — a state cross country qualifier — brought home two first place finishes in both the 1500m and 3000m run.

Karsyn and Kenna Lamm went second and third overall in the hurdles, while winning the 4×100 Shuttle Hurdle Relay with a time of 1:11:60.

The Lamm sisters were joined on that relay by Allie Westercamp and Jenna Gilmore.

In field events, throwers Jaden Brumbaugh and Grace Kelley had strong opening season performances.

Brumbaugh threw 41-feet even to capture first place by nearly seven feet, while Kelley took first in the discus, hurling 116-05, beating Maisey Belger of West Burlington by three inches.

Pekin won the Class B division, but Danville senior Addison Parrott swept the long distance runs winning the 1500m and 3000m runs — fairly easily.

Danville also won the 4x100m relay, with WACO and Winfield-Mount Union finishing in succession at second and third.

Winfield-Mount Union’s Bradie Buffington took home a first place medal in the Class B shotput, throwing 34-05, nearly a foot and a half better than that of second place Drew Fox of Danville.

Prep Tennis: Panthers Ousted by Maharishi:

Levi Graber and Brian Hyunh each picked up singles victories, but it was Maharishi pulling out a 5-4 win over the Mount Pleasant boys’ tennis team yesterday at Mahrishi High School.

Mount Pleasant’s No. 1 singles player David Nguyen fell to Ramil Patel 6-2, 1-6, (10-1).

Graber picked up his win in straight sets 6-2, 6-4 while Hyunh won 6-4, 7-5.

In doubles, Owen Van Sickel and Linc Henriksen picked up a solid win beating Maharishi’s top singles Player Ramil Patel and Jayanta Wegman by 9-7 score.

In No. 3 doubles, Levi Graber and Brian Hyuhn mollywhopped the Maharishi tandem of Dominic Dufaux and William Nguyen 8-1.

Men’s College Basketball: Iowa’s Nunge to Transfer:

Redshirt sophomore Jack Nunge has notified head coach Fran McCaffery of his intentions to transfer from the University of Iowa and the men’s basketball program, the University has announced.

This year, Nunge suffered a torn meniscus just days after the unexpected death of his father.

It was reported the transfer release with the intention of moving closer to his home state of Indiana.

Nunge was the team’s leading scorer (7.1) and rebounder (5.3) off the bench in 22 games played in 2020-21. He started 19-of-60 games as a Hawkeye, averaging 6.3 points, 3.9 rebounds, 1.2 assists, 0.7 blocks, and 0.5 steals.

Women’s College Basketball: Clark Named WBCA Co-Freshman of the Year:

University of Iowa’s Caitlin Clark has been named the WBCA Co-Freshman of the Year, the University has announced.

Clark shares the honor this year with UCONN’s Paige Bueckers.

In 30 games this season, Clark averaged 26.6 points, 7.1 assists, and 5.9 rebounds per game.

Clark led Iowa to the Sweet Sixteen, marking the program’s eighth Sweet Sixteen appearance, and its third in its last four NCAA Tournament appearances.

The West Des Moines, Iowa, native broke the Iowa women’s basketball record for points scored in a freshman campaign and currently ranks third all-time at Iowa for points in a single season behind Megan Gustafson’s junior and senior seasons.

Prep Track: Panthers, Bulldogs Win Falcon Relays:

The Mount Pleasant Panther boys track team won the Class A division, while Mediapolis took the Class B crown at yesterday’s Falcon Relays at West Burlington High School.

Panther sophomore Will Davidson won the open 200m running 24.64 for first, while Bryce Wilson took first in the 110m high hurdles finishing in 16.60 seconds.

Mount Pleasant’s distance medley team of Colton Hutson, Josh Mueller, Nate Stroud and Gannon McNamee cleaned shop, also earning a first place finish running a solid 4:18.83, four seconds better than that of second place Washington.

Cooper Pullis was also a top finisher for the Panthers, winning the shot put with a throw of 51-5.

In Class B, Mediapolis was anchored by Kadin Salek’s strong performance in the sprints, winning both the 100m and 200m dash.

New London, who finished second, was paced by long distance dynamo Alexander Julian, who won both the 1600m and 32000m run.

Prep Track: Falcon Girls’ Relays Tonight:

One day after the boys’ the girls’ will now get their chance to shine at the Girls’ Falcon Relays tonight back at West Burlington High School.

Mount Pleasant, winners of seven straight Southeast Conference titles, will look to continue right where they left off under Scott Lamm starting tonight.

The Panthers will be joined by:

Like the boys’ meet, teams will be split into enrollment based classes.

Prep Tennis: Mount Pleasant Opens Against Maharishi:

The Mount Pleasant tennis team will get things started in their 2021 season today, when the Panthers travel to Maharishi for a nonconference affair.

After qualifying for team state in 2019, the Panthers — like everyone — had last year off but will look to pick up right where they left off, starting tonight.

Tennis action will begin at 4:30 p.m. this afternoon.

College Wrestling: Spencer Lee Wins Another Dan Hodge Trophy:

For the second year in a row, University of Iowa national champion Spencer Lee has been awarded the Dan Hodge Trophy.

The award is presented annually to the nation’s most dominant college wrestler.

Lee won the 125-pound NCAA Championship on March 20.

He outscored his five opponents at the national tournament, 59-8, capturing his third career NCAA title and leading Iowa to the team title for the first time since 2010.

Lee is one of just three Hawkeyes to win the award since its inception in 1995.

Mark Ironside was honored in 1998 and Brent Metcalf earned the award in 2008.

 

College Volleyball: Wesleyan Swept in Quarters

St. Louis — The Iowa Wesleyan volleyball team was swept in the quarterfinals of the SLIAC Conference Tournament, losing 3-0 to top-seeded Westminster.

The Blue Jays took the matchup 25-16, 25-23, 25-20.

Malie DeMate paced the Tigers offensively with 12 kills.

Jenna Murphy led the back row with 15 digs. Lindsay Fernandes had 11 assists for Wesleyan.

The loss dropped Wesleyan to 1-14.

They’ll close out the season in the 7th place match tomorrow, against an opponent to be determined.

College Softball: Wesleyan “Splits” Doubleheader

Eureka (Ill.) — The Iowa Wesleyan softball team “split” their doubleheader with Eureka on Saturday, but will need to travel back to the Land of Lincoln to finish off game two after rain ended proceedings.

In game one, the Tigers were beaten 8-6.

Morgan Christner was the losing pitcher for the Tigers, allowing eight hits and eight earned runs, while striking out five.

Wesleyan was led offensively by Alex Eyman who went 3-for-3 with two home runs and five runs batted in.

Former Danville prep Ashley Pfadenhauer also added a round-tripper for the Tigers.

In game two, the Tigers jumped out a 7-0 lead after two innings on the back of another Pfadenhauer home run, she tallied five runs batted in the abbreviated game two.

It is unclear when they will make the rest of that contest up.

The Tigers will host a home doubleheader on Friday, when they welcome in Greenville University.

First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.

Men’s College Basketball: Wesleyan Blows Lead, Late Chance to Win

Mount Pleasant — Chanz Aldridge finished with 38 points as Blackburn overcame an eleven-point deficit to win their sixth straight game, 77-76 over Iowa Wesleyan, Saturday afternoon.

Aldridge had 23 points at the break as he nearly singlehandedly carried the Beavers.

Kaleb Cresswell led Wesleyan with 28 points, while Jarryd Fernandes provided his usual lunch-pail double double of 14 points and 12 rebounds.

Wesleyan had a chance to walk the game off, leading by one with 7.8 to play, Aldridge scuffed his free throw but Wesleyan could not get a shot off.

The loss dropped the Tigers to 4-8 overall and prevented them from winning back-to-back games for the first time this season.

They’ll end their home schedule on Wednesday in a doubleheader against Greenville — they’ll tip at 7:30 p.m.

Women’s College Basketball: Wesleyan Outlasts Blackburn

Mount Pleasant — The Iowa Wesleyan women’s basketball team scored 32 points in the fourth quarter as they pulled away for an 85-66 win Saturday after Blackburn.

The win snapped a six-game losing streak for the Tigers, while sweeping the season series against Blackburn.

Morgan McCrea had a game high 25 points, while Anija Simmons chipped in with a monster double double of 19 points and 20 boards.

Sydney Farrar and Hannah Sykora also got into double figures with 13 and 12 points respectively.

The win moved Wesleyan to 2-10 overall and 2-6 in conference play.

They’ll lock horns with Greenville University on Wednesday, you can listen to that game on FM 105.5

They’ll tip at 5:30 p.m.

Prep Track: Mount Pleasant Boys’ at West Burlington
