Michael Alan Gilchrist

Michael Alan Gilchrist, 64 of Keosauqua, IA passed away at 9:09 AM Sunday January 23, 2022 at Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua. In accordance with his wishes his body will be cremated. There will be a graveside service held at Zion Lutheran Cemetery west of Keosauqua at 11:00 AM on Monday May 16, 2022. Memorials to Keosauqua Health Care Center or Center Village may be mailed to the family at 6 Country Club Place, Ottumwa, IA 52501. Friends and family may leave online condolences at www.cranstonfamilyfuneralhome.com.
Michael was born on May 16, 1957 in Fairfield to Clayton Wallace and Virginia L. Smith Gilchrist. He spent his early years in Douds and attended Van Buren Community Schools. Nearly all his adult life was spent in Keosauqua living at Center Village. Michael moved from Center Village to Keosauqua Healthcare Center five years ago where he made many friends.
He loved attending the Fall Festival in Keosauqua and the motorcycle parade during the Stateline Rally. He once got the chance to ride in the parade while he was at Center Village. Michael was also a life-long fan of WWE.
Left to cherish his memory are his mother, Virginia Falkner (Bill) of Ottumwa, a sister, Diana Clay (David) of Scottsdale, AZ, a nephew, Josh Clay of Cornville, AZ, a niece, Jamie Tinkle (Josh) of Flagstaff, AZ and three great nieces all of Flagstaff, AZ and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Clayton W. Gilchrist.

Offender Fails to Return to Residential Facility

According to the Iowa Department of Corrections, John Robert Burlingame, a convicted Habitual Offender from Lee County, failed to report back to the Burlington Residential Facility on Saturday as required. Burlingame is described as a 43 year old white male, 5’11” and weighing 249 pounds.  He was admitted to the work release facility in February.  Anyone with information about Burlingame’s whereabouts should contact local police.

Ossian, Iowa Man Killed in Car Crash in Washington County

The Iowa State Patrol investigated a fatal traffic accident Sunday in Washington County.  According to the Patrol at about 11:45 a.m. Brenden Poole of Ossian, Iowa was driving at a high rate of speed southbound on Highway 218. Poole lost control of the vehicle near mile marker 73. The vehicle entered the ditch then vaulted a small creek and came to rest after hitting a tree. The incident remains under investigation.

Miller-Meeks Office Hours

United States Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks of Iowa announces the times and locations her staff will hold mobile office hours across the Second District during the month of May. Staff will be available to answer questions and assist Iowans by facilitating casework with the federal government. Staff can help with issues related to Medicare/Medicaid, Social Security, veterans’ benefits, passports, immigration issues, and other federal programs. Here is the schedule for locations in the KILJ listening area. May 17 office hours will be held from 11:00am – 12:00pm in the Washington City Hall Council Chambers. In Henry County from 1:00 – 2:00pm in the Winfield City Hall, Council Chambers. And in Wapello at the Louisa County Community Services Building from 3 to 4 pm. On May 18th Mobile office hours will be held from 9:00 – 10:00am at the Mediapolis City Hall. In Lee County from  11:00am – 12:00pm at the West Point Public Library. From 1:00 – 2:00pm at the Van Buren County Courthouse in Keosauqua and in Jefferson County from 3:00 – 4:00pm at the Jefferson County Courthouse in Fairfield. Those unable to attend can always reach out to the Congresswoman’s offices in Ottumwa at 641-244-7020 and Davenport at 563-232-0930 for assistance.

Celebrate Beef and the Beef Industry During Beef Month

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has proclaimed May as “Beef Month” in Iowa. Iowa is a major beef producing state with more than 3.85 million head of cattle and calves as of January 1, 2022. Each year, roughly 20,000 beef cattle operations generate more than $7 billion of economic activity in the state. Iowa is also a leader in the export of value-added agriculture products, shipping high-quality Iowa beef to other countries around the world. During “Beef Month,” the Iowa Cattlemen’s Association invites producers and consumers across the state to join their efforts in sharing how Iowa cattlemen feed a growing population, while stewarding the land, water and natural resources.

Jimmy E. Benedict

Jimmy E. Benedict, 85, of Farmington, Iowa, passed away at 10:26 a.m. Saturday, April 30, 2022 at the Van Buren County Hospital in Keosauqua.

He was born on July 29, 1936, in Farmington, Iowa, the son of Russell Newton and LaVanchie Marie (Bartholomew) Benedict. On January 21, 1962, he married Freda Mae Riley at Bonaparte Methodist Church. She preceded him in death on November 11, 2020.

Survivors include his daughter: Sandra (Lonnie) Turner of Farmington, Iowa; two grandchildren: Meagon Alyse Turner of Iowa City, Iowa, Austin James (fiancé Kensee) Turner of Fairfield, Iowa; great grandchild: Novalyn Grace Turner, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Freda; daughter Carrie Jo Benedict; brother Joe Benedict; sister Pasty Ann McManis; niece Debbie Benedict Polson and nephews Joe McManis and Michael McManis, and several cousins.

Jim worked as a supervisor for Iowa Prison Industries in Fort Madison, IA, Kaiser Agra Center, and Fruehauf Corporation. He was a United States Navy veteran and served as a boatswain’s mate. He was a member of the Farmington American Legion for over fifty years and a former member of the Farmington Jaycees and Farmington Fire Department. Jim was an avid arrowhead and mushroom hunter. He enjoyed living on the farm, fishing, bird hunting, and baseball. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and watching them play sports.

Visitation will be from noon to 7:00 p.m. at Schmitz Funeral Home in Farmington on Tuesday, May 3, 2022, with family meeting friends from 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 4, 2022.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 4, 2022 at Schmitz Funeral Home in Farmington with Pastor Larry Shipley officiating.

Burial will be in the Greenglade Cemetery in Farmington with full military rites by the Farmington American Legion.

Memorials may be made to the Farmington Ball Association or Farmington American Legion.
