Joyce Howell

Joyce Howell, 84, of Wapello, passed on October 20, 2021 at her home.  Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 25, 2021 at First Presbyterian Church of Wapello.  Memorial Services will follow at 11:00 a.m. on Monday at the church with a luncheon to follow.  Burial will be in Wapello Cemetery.   Memorials have been established for Keck Memorial Library, Wapello Community Schools, First Presbyterian Church of Wapello, and the Wapello Fire Department.  Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral and Cremation Service of Wapello is caring for the family. Joyce Ann Howell was born on July 4, 1937 in Grandview, the daughter of Carl and Marguerite (Cocklin) McGill.  Joyce was a 1955 graduate of Grandview High School, received her teaching certificate from The University of Northern Iowa and her bachelor’s degree from The University of Iowa.  On May 31, 1960, Joyce was united in marriage to Willard Howell at the Little Brown Church is Nashua, Iowa.  Joyce was a teacher for over 30 years, including teaching in the school districts of Clear Lake, Battle Creek, North Polk and retiring in 1998 from Wapello Community Schools.  She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Wapello and a former member of Delta Kappa Gamma.  She enjoyed reading and watching games shows and sports.  Joyce’s greatest passion kids, grandkids and great-grandkids.

 

Joyce will be deeply missed by her husband, Willard; children, Lori (Dutch) Beenen of Columbus Junction, Debbie (Dave Fletcher) Howell of Cedar Rapids and Rod (Alisa) Howell of Wapello; grandchildren, Mickey Sprague, Amber (Tanner) Grimm, Zachary Howell, Ryley (Lexi) Howell, Arin Howell, Courtney Fletcher and Kayla Beenen and great-grandchildren, Taden Grimm, Brooke Sprague, Ryatt Howell and Willa Joy Grimm.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Patricia Bonnichsen and Carlyne McGill.

Honor Choir Students

Five Mount Pleasant Community School District music students have been selected to the 2021 OPUS Honor Choir. They are seventh grader Michael Tansey, eighth graders Olivia McCormick, Caleb Reyes and Isaiah Denning and ninth grader Bryton Weir.

Over 2,100 students from across Iowa were nominated by their directors for 720 positions in the four OPUS Honor Choirs. Students were then selected by means of a recorded audition. The 2021 OPUS Honor Choirs will perform at 4 p.m., November 18th at CY Stephens Auditorium in Ames. The festival is made possible by the Iowa Choral Directors Association, Inc.

Daily Jail Countuy

In the interest of keeping Henry County residents informed, the Henry County Sheriff’s office has requested KILJ post the daily jail count. During the jail referendum campaign it was publicized that the jail would be able to house additional inmates from surrounding counties and this would generate revenue for Henry County.

Gerhard E. Luebbers

Gerhard E. Luebbers, 88, of Farmington, Iowa, passed away at 7:27 a.m. Tuesday, October 19, 2021, at the home of his daughter in Revere, Missouri.

Born on May 26,1933, in Geneva, Iowa, the son of George A. and Dorothea (Willard) Luebbers. He married Patricia Skinner, they later divorced. On November 25, 1989 he married Ruth Emma Petty at Saint Boniface Catholic Church in Farmington. She preceded him in death on June 17, 2007.

He is survived by one daughter: Dawn (John) Hesse of Revere, Missouri; six sons: Andy Luebbers of Farmington, Iowa, Tom (Patricia) Petty of Colorado, Terry Petty of Hawthorne, Nevada, Jerry (Linda) Petty of Farmington, Iowa, David (Casey) Petty of Farmington, Iowa, Sam Petty of Clarksville, Tennessee; grandchildren: Kristopher, Kodi, Kelsie, Austin, Alissa, and many more grandchildren and great grandchildren, three sisters: Clara Munson, Jo DeFreise, Janice Pagen; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Ruth, step son Larry Petty, sister Agnes,  daughter in law Sylvia.

Gerhard was a member of the Saint Boniface Catholic Church, and The Knights of Columbus. He loved riding horses, welding, farming, ranching, dancing and watching western shows. Most of all he loved spending time with family and friends.

Friends may call 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, October 24, 2021 at Schmitz Funeral Home, Farmington.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, October 25, 2021, 10:00 a.m. at Saint Boniface Catholic Church in Farmington with Father Dennis Hoffman as Celebrant. Burial will be at the String Prairie Cemetery near Argyle.

A memorial has been established in his memory.

Angela Sutherland

Angela Sutherland, 56 of Wapello passed away on Monday, October 18, 2021 at her home.  Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 22, 2021 at Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral & Cremation Services of Wapello.  Memorial Services will be at 5:00 p.m. on Friday evening at the funeral home following visitation.  Private family burial will be in Wapello Cemetery.  A memorial has been established in Angela’s name.  Sympathy messages can be left for the family at www.sandfuneralservice.com.

 

Angela Dawn Shafer was born on June 5, 1965 in Muscatine, the daughter of Richard Shafer and Sandra Mae Tompkins.  Angela was in the Class of 1984 at Wapello High School, went on to graduate with her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education for Iowa Wesleyan College and later received her Master’s Degree from William Penn University.  Angela was a special education teacher at Wapello Elementary Schools; where her job was one of her passions in life.  She enjoyed reading, music and most importantly spending time with her family.

 

Angela will be deeply missed by her children, Karynda (Casey) Mangold of New London, Cody (Jonathan Fritz) Shafer of West Des Moines, Levi (Samantha Bryson) Sutherland of Wapello and Jacob ( Hannah Chaney) Sutherland of Wapello; grandchildren Wyatt, Kinsley, Emmett and Mya Mangold; step-mother, Debbie Shafer of Wapello; siblings, Al (Pauline) Shafer of Davenport, John Shafer of Wapello, Mandi (Bobby) Mincer of Burlington, Brett (Abby) Shafer of Wapello, Brian (Kristin Hagberg) Shafer of Wapello, Charli Shafer of Wapello and Serah Shafer of Wapello; lifelong best friend, Loretta Estabrook and a host of extended family and friends.

 

Angela was preceded in death by her parents and maternal grandmother, Georgia Tompkins.

Carol Lynn Dustman

Carol Lynn Dustman, 67, of Mt. Pleasant, died Monday, October 18, 2021 at Park Place, Mt. Pleasant.  She was born June 23, 1954, in Vinton, Iowa to Clarence Bertram and Doris Maurine Williams McNiel.  On June 29, 2002 she married Gary E. Dustman in Cedar Rapids.

She was a 1972 graduate of Center Point High School, then attended Kirkwood Community College and graduated from Mount Mercy College.  For more than 40 years she worked as a Quality Inspector at Rockwell Collins.

Carol was a member of First United Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant where she previously sang in the choir.  She enjoyed wine, cooking, music and attending concerts, being with friends and family, and traveled with her husband Gary to over twenty national parks.

Besides her husband, she is survived by a brother, Robert McNiel of Midway, Kentucky; sisters Nancy (Jim) Willert of Frankfort, Kentucky and Opal McNiel of Marion, Iowa; nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; and her sister-in-law Paula Curran of Burlington and her three children.  Preceding her in death were her parents and brothers, Richard and Dale.

Cremation has been accorded and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.  Memorials have been established for First United Methodist Church of Mt. Just a Little More Street Work

There is still some street work taking place in Mount Pleasant. Beginning Wednesday Norris Asphalt will be working in the 300 block of West Monroe Street and into the intersection with White Street. There will also be work taking place on Grand Avenue from Henry Street to the first bridge.  There will be a pilot car thru this area. Crews are milling in both areas and the work is ongoing the rest of the week. Crews will have to come back to do the black topping.
