  1. Accept or amend the agenda.

 

  1.   1. Discussion and action on the August Des Moines County Sheriff reports as presented.

 

  1. Update from Chris Lee, Des Moines County Conservation office to discuss Waters Park. Action by council if needed.

 

  1. Discussion and action on Resolution 2021-25 to set a hearing date on the 405 West Division Street property.

 

  1. Review of Chapter 8.08 pertaining to notifying property owners of a possible nuisance. Action by council if needed.

 

  1. Discussion and action on adding the traffic lights to the city insurance policy.

 

  1. Discussion and action on the proposal from JPW Technologies on the utility handheld/docking equipment.

Linda Sue Johnson

Linda Sue Johnson, 68, formerly of Olds, IA died Saturday, September 18, 2021, at the Keota Health Care Center following a battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Her body has been cremated and private family graveside services will be held at the Bethel Cemetery at a later date. Beatty-Peterseim Funeral, Cremation Care and Monument Services is assisting in her care. A general memorial fund has been established in her name.

MP Marching Band Invite Results

The Mount Pleasant Marching Band Invitational was held Saturday night and featured 20 high school bands and 1,705 musicians.

In Class 1A/2A, Tipton took top honors followed by Central Lee, Wapello, Cardinal and Mediapolis.  Central Lee won caption awards for Best Color Guard and Best Drum Major while Tipton won the honors of Best Drumline and Best Horn Line.

In Class 3A, Center Point-Urbana placed first followed by Benton Community, Fort Madison, Williamsburg, West Liberty, Keokuk and Washington. Benton Community won caption awards for Best Drum Major, Best Color Guard and Best Drumline. The Best Horn Line award went to Center Point-Urbana.

In Class 4A, Davenport Central took first place followed by Quincy, Clinton, Muscatine, Western Dubuque and Ottumwa. Davenport Central won caption awards for Best Drum Major, Best Drumline and Best Horn Line with Quincy winning Best Color Guard.

The Best Represented Band Award went to Benton Community who had the most fans in attendance. The Sweepstakes Award, given to the band with the highest combined score from the Mount Pleasant contest and the Fort Madison Band Classic held earlier in the day went to Davenport Central.

 

 

Candidates for the Henry County School Boards

Each of the four school districts in Henry County will hold elections November 2.

Mount Pleasant School Board members Kevin Sandersfeld and Willey Amos are running again. Martha Wiley chose not to run for another term. Derek Mullin is running for that open seat.

The New London School district voters may vote for no more than two candidates. And there are only two on the ballot…Kyle Helmerson and incumbent Lindsay Porter.

Aaron Cumnings is the only person running for the Winfield Mt. Union School Board. But there are two open seats.

WACO School Board member Barb Shelman is running un-opposed for director district four and Tim Graber, another current WACO Board member, is running un-opposed for the at large seat.

John L. Clark

John L. Clark, 78, of Mt. Pleasant, died Monday, September 13, 2021 at his residence.

A graveside funeral service for Mr. Clark will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, September 20 at the North Hill Cemetery, rural Wayland, IA, where interment will take place. The Rev. Michael D. Johnson, Pastor, Mt. Pleasant Church of the Open Bible, will officiate.  Open visitation will be from 4-7 PM Sunday at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 N. Main St., Mt. Pleasant.

John Lyman Clark was born March 17, 1943. He was the son of John Shirley and Velma B. Clark.

John was a longtime farmer on his family’s farm southeast of Mt. Pleasant. He enjoyed attending Midwest Old Threshers and the Western Illinois Threshers Show in Hamilton, IL. John also enjoyed the car races in West Burlington and his bus trips to major league baseball games in Chicago and St. Louis.

John has no immediate survivors.

Auditor’s Office Has Put Together Official Candidate List

Here is the official list of Henry County mayoral and city council candidates for the coming General Elections.

As expected, Mount Pleasant Mayor Steve Brimhall and three incumbent council members are seeking re-election. All will run unopposed in the November 2 general elections.  Bob Griffith, Jeff Batty and Terry McWilliams are each hoping to serve another 4 year term on the council.

In Salem there are three people running for mayor..James Tomson, Mary Hoyer, and Kelly Anderman.  There are six people running for the two seats on that council that will be open…. John Wagner, Haley Swinscoe, Tarrant French, Justin Traman and incumbents Gary Tedrow, and Christina Feehan.

In Westwood Mayor Brant Knudsen is running for re-election unopposed. There are four people running for three seats on the council.  They are Eric Peterson, Monte Knudsen, Darrel Rodgers and incumbent Gary Lane.

New London’s incumbent Mayor Kirk Miller is running unopposed.  Incumbent council members Dan Berner, Scott Campbell and Brad Helmerson are each running unopposed for four year terms.  Travis Benz is running for a two year term without opposition.

In Wayland Mayor Chet Fort is the only candidate for that position. Incumbents Caylon Devaul and Jamie Roth wish to repeat four year terms on the council. A third council member, Melinda Ullery, is seeking re-election to a two year term.  No one else has thrown their name into the hat for the Wayland City elections.

There are five names on the Winfield ballot for city council. Voters may vote for no more than three. Randy Redlinger and Jennifer Wade are the incumbents. The other candidates are David Pieart, Robert Quinn and Scott Jennings.

There is one candidate for mayor in Olds. That’s Jason Waterhouse. Voters can for no more than three council members. And there are three candidates on the ballot….incumbents Candice Curry and Fred Roth.  The third candidate is Timothy Breuer.

Frankie Nupp is the only candidate on the ballot for mayor in Coppock. Voters there may vote for no more than three council members.  The candidates are Dakota Knerr, Jennifer Stoderl, Ananna Knerr, Shelby Gier and incumbent Dustin Palmer.

Current Hillsboro council members Chad Brousseau, Eric Sanderson and Michaeleen Kaeser are seeking re-election. There is a fourth candidate, Myron Helmers but residents can vote for no more than three. William Sanderson is running for a two year term. (not for mayor as previously published.

WACO Royalty

Congratulations to the 2021 WACO Homecoming King and Queen! King is Jonah Clark, son of Bill and Joni Huisenga. Queen is Jaicey Miller, daughter of BJ and Jana Miller. They will reign over Homecoming activities on Friday.

The rest of the court includes Lilly Clark the daughter of Kevin and Lisa Clark.  Maggie Rinner, the daughter of Ty and Diane Rinner. Zach Schmitz is the son of Todd and Laura Schmitz and Jonah Egli, the son of Jason and Gail Egli.

The Homecoming Parade will begin at 5 pm on Main Street. The football game will begin at 7 pm against the Iowa Valley Tigers.
