Vehicle Hits Cable Guard Railing

On June 30, 2020, at approximately 3:37AM, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call stating there had been a single vehicle crash near mile marker 45 on U.S. Highway 218 just north of Mount Pleasant, Iowa. After an investigation, it was found that Beth Ann Hadley (33 years of age) of Waterloo, Iowa, was driving a white, 2004, Cadillac Escalade northbound on U.S. Highway 218 near miler marker 45. Beth drover her vehicle off into the median portion of the roadway. After driving the vehicle off into the median, Beth’s vehicle struck the cable guard railing which was located along the median to prevent vehicles from striking the pillars to the overpass. Beth’s vehicle was a total loss due to striking the cable guard railing. It was estimated the vehicle sustained $9,000.00 in damages. At the present time, it is unknown what the estimated damages are to the cable guard railing. Beth was given a citation for Failing to Maintain Control of Motor Vehicle.

Two Semi Crash

On June 30, 2020, at approximately 11:50PM, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call stating a semi rear ended another semi in the 2000 Grid of U.S. Highway 34 near Mount Pleasant, Iowa. After an investigation, it was found that Michael Lantz (35 years of age) of Keokuk, Iowa, was traveling westbound on U.S. Highway 34 in a semi. Michael stated another semi, which was operated by Thomas Lesperance (65 years of age) of Lebanon, Indiana, had been following behind him and had been tailgating him off and on. Michael slowed his semi down, activated the hazard lights, and started to pull off onto the shoulder of the roadway to allow the other semi to pass his position. As a result, Thomas rear ended the trailer of Michael’s semi due to following too closely. Thomas’ semi sustained non-functioning damage with an estimated $9,000.00 worth of damages. Michael’s semi sustained minimal damage and was able to driven away from the scene. Michael sustained possible non-life-threatening injuries. Thomas was given a citation for Following Too Closely.

An Iowa D.O.T. Officer responded and conducted a vehicle inspection of Thomas’ semi & trailer. Paramedics from the Henry County Health Center, the Mount Pleasant Fire, and the Iowa State Patrol all assisted with this incident

Governor Reynolds Signs Tobacco 21 Bill into Law

Governor Reynolds today signed a bill into law that raises the legal age to purchase cigarettes, and tobacco and vaping products to 21. The Iowa Senate passed the bill in March of this year, but the legislative recess due to COVID-19 kept the Iowa House from taking up the bill until June 11.

“This law brings Iowa into alignment with the federal Tobacco 21 bill, which was signed into law in December 2019,” said Iowa Department of Public Health Tobacco Use Prevention and Control Division Director Jerilyn Oshel. There are no exemptions or grandfather clauses to the Iowa or federal law.

Under the law, it is illegal to sell or supply covered tobacco products to a person under 21 years of age and a person under 21 years is prevented from possessing, purchasing or attempting to purchase a covered tobacco product.

According to the 2018 Iowa Youth Survey, almost 1 in 4 11th graders use some form of tobacco or vaping product. For more information about tobacco control efforts in Iowa, visit https://www.idph.iowa.gov/tupc.
