This Primary Vote From the Safety of Your Home

Iowa Secretary of State’s Office and Henry County Auditor, Shelly Barber encourage all Henry County Voters to vote Absentee from the safety of your home in this June 2 Primary Election.  You will be receiving absentee ballot requests in your mailboxes starting April 29th, fill it out and put back in the mail as it has postage paid return.  The Henry County Auditor’s Office will be mailing your ballots out to you within 24 hours of receiving your request.  Vote your ballot, sign the back of the postage paid return envelope and drop back in the mail as soon as possible to insure the arrival back to the Auditor’s Office by June 2nd.

If you do not receive an Absentee Ballot Request in the mail or do not wish to vote by mail or at the polls there will be early voting.  All Early Voting this election starts May 4th thru June 1st at 900 W Washington St, Mt Pleasant at the West End of the Henry County Emergency Management Building, from 8 am-4:30 pm due to the Courthouse being closed to the public.

Election Day June 2, 2020 all the regular polling locations will be open from           7 am – 9 pm.  All voters will be asked to put on masks and rubber gloves which will be provided upon entering the early voting location and the polling locations as well as maintaining the 6 ft. social distancing for everyone’s safety.  Thank you for help and understanding.

Mount Pleasant Street Project Update

Warren St. between Jackson & Jefferson Streets will remain closed through the weekend. Crews will finish backfilling a trench Monday April 27th. Kinney & Sons will start removing the concrete surface of Warren St. from South Van Buren to White Street Monday April 27th. To access Park Place Long Term Care Center you will need to use the park road from Saunders Park that is just south of the Family Aquatic Center. Once you get to the top of the hill there is a temporary gravel approach between the park road and the Park Place parking lot. This access will be used for entering and exiting the Park Place during the re-construction of Warren Street from  Van Buren to White Street. You will not be able to access HCHC Physical Therapy from this route. You will need to use the Main Entrance to the hospital for Physical Therapy.

Additional COVID-19 cases in Iowa, additional deaths confirmed

DES MOINES – Friday, the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) was notified of 521 additional positive cases for a total of 4,445 positive cases. There have been an additional 2,190 negative tests for a total of 27,528 negative tests to date, which includes testing reported by the State Hygienic Lab and other labs.

According to IDPH, an additional 11 deaths were also reported, 278 are currently hospitalized, and 1,604 Iowans have recovered.

According to IDPH the additional 11 deaths were reported in the following counties:

  • Bremer County, 1 elderly adults (81+)
  • Black Hawk County, 1 middle-age adult (41-60 years), 2 older adults (61-80 years)
  • Linn County,  2 older adults (61-80 years), 2 elderly adults (81+)
  • Polk County, 2 elderly adults (81+)
  • Scott County, 1 older adult (61-80 years)

The state of Iowa has released an updated dashboard on coronavirus.iowa.gov that will be updated daily to include comprehensive tracking of COVID-19 in Iowa. The new dashboard includes cases, deaths, and tests conducted in each county. The state is now providing demographic information that was not previously provided as well as Iowa’s epidemiological curve.

Florence Edna Kinney

Florence Edna Kinney, 97, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Wednesday, April 22, 2020, at the Park Place Elder Living Center in Mt. Pleasant.

A private graveside service will be held at the Forest Home Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant with Reverend David Bracht-Wagner officiating.  A Celebration of Life Service for Florence will be held at a later date to be announced.  In honor of Florence, memorials may be directed to VFW Auxiliary Post 2561 of Mt. Pleasant and the First United Methodist Church of Mt. Pleasant.

Dump Truck Strikes Cable

April 22 the Henry County Sheriff’s office received a report of an accident at the intersection of 260th Street and Oasis Avenue.  An investigation determined that Larry Saunders of Farmington was operating a dump truck owned by Cole Construction of Keosauqua.  After spreading a load of gravel Saunders forgot to lower the dump bed and continued driving.  The raised dump bed struck a Mediacom fiber optic cable.  The cable and pole supporting it were damaged.

Tri-State Rodeo Entertainment Announcement

Fort Madison, IA (April 24, 2020) – The Tri-State Rodeo is proud to announce the Entertainment Headliners for the 73rd Annual Tri-State Rodeo.

The Tri-State Rodeo Committee continues preparations for the 2020 Tri-State Rodeo September 9, 10, 11 and 12. The entertainment lineup for the  73rd Annual Rodeo in Fort Madison includes country music up and comer HARDY on Thursday September 9. They are throwing it back to the 90’s on Friday with country legends Mark Chesnutt and David Lee Murphy both performing. On Saturday night country music star Trace Adkins will be on the main stage! Each night there will be entertainment in the After-Rodeo Party Pavilion as well. Wednesday and Thursday Joe Stamm Band performs and Stumptown will be here on Friday and Saturday nights. Music on the main stage starts immediately after the rodeo ends each night.

Tickets for the Tri-State Rodeo are on sale now and available at www.tristarerodeo.org. Tickets will be available at the Tri-State Rodeo Box Office once reopened.
