Dorothy was born August 22, 1939 in Galveston, Texas, the daughter of Hyman R. and Esther C. (Alexander) Crim. She moved with her family to Navasota, Texas and then to Bryan, Texas where she graduated from Bryan High School in 1957.  She received the Bachelor of Music degree from North Texas State University in 1961.

Dorothy taught music in Dallas, Texas for three years while obtaining her Master of Music degree from North Texas State Teachers University (now the University of North Texas).

On August 22, 1964, Dorothy was united in marriage to Carl B. Moehlman, Jr. at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Bryan.  Shortly after their marriage, the couple made their home in Mt. Pleasant, IA, as Carl accepted a position in the Music Department of Iowa Wesleyan College.  Dorothy taught Elementary Music in Dallas, Texas, and at Clark Elementary School in New London—a teaching career of twenty-five years.  In addition to her school teaching, Dorothy directed children’s and youth choirs at First United Methodist Church, Mt. Pleasant and taught private vocal lessons.   Always honing her skills and seeking fresh materials for her classroom, she attended professional conventions and workshops each summer, and continued to study voice and piano.  She was a member of the Mt. Pleasant Chorale and numerous church choirs.

Dorothy was a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Burlington, IA and the Iowa Retired School Personnel Association.  While teaching, she was a member of the National Education Association, the Iowa State Education Association and the Music Educators National Conference.
