Postseason Football

The 2024 semifinal matchups concluded over the weekend with Class 2A and Class 3A rounding out an action packed week at the UNI-Dome. 

For Class 2A, Spirit Lake jumped out to a 21 to 0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, winning 56-28 over PCM. The Caden Lundt to Dylan Stecker connection was unstoppable, combining for 178 yards and three touchdowns in the win. 

In the second game of the day, West Lyon’s offense overcame a slow start to knock Van Meter out 49-24. Bryson Childress collected 289 all-purpose yards and four total touchdowns. The Class 2A state championship will take place on Friday, November 22nd, at 10 am.

Both games in Class 3A went down to the wire as Wahlert Catholic sealed a 17-16 win over Sergeant Bluff-Luton with a drive-ending interception by Luke Welbes. Michael Bormann was the workhorse for the Golden Eagles, rushing for 184 yards and a touchdown. 

In the final game of the night, Mt. Vernon’s comeback attempt was thwarted by a forced fumble by Isaiah Busick, ending the Mustang’s season in a 28-25 loss to Humboldt. Coen Matson carved the Mustang secondary up to the tune of 208 passing yards and three scores. The Class 3A championship is scheduled for 1 pm on Friday. 

The 8-Player championship game between Remsen St. Mary’s and Gladbrook-Reinbeck will be played on Thursday, November 21st, at 9:30 am.

The Class A championship game between Tri-Center and West Hancock is scheduled for Thursday at 1 pm. 

The Class 1A championship game is scheduled for Thursday at 4 pm between Dike-New Hartford and the defending champions Grundy Center.

Pella versus North Polk will decide who the Class 4A champion is on Thursday night at 7 pm.

Valley and Southeast Polk will compete on Friday at 7 for the Class 5A championship.

High School Basketball

The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team will be hosting a jamboree tonight at 6 with Burlington Notre Dame taking on Keokuk, Mediapolis facing off against Fort Madison, and the Panthers competing against Winfield-Mt. Union.

Boys’ basketball officially gets underway today all across Iowa. For Mt. Pleasant’s head coach Eric Rawson, this young team will get a chance to completely focus on basketball,

“Just getting in the right mindset for one and, again, getting that court time with each other where you’re able to understand each other’s abilities and trust your own ability and, again, the more court time the better for this group, for certain.”

The Van Buren County girls’ team will participate in a jamboree tomorrow, November 19th, at Pekin with the Warriors going against Albia. 

The Columbus girls’ team will travel to Tipton, while the boys’ team will host English Valleys on Friday, November 22nd, for a scrimmage.

WACO will take on Van Buren County on Friday at home in a scrimmage. 

West Burlington will scrimmage Fort Madison at home on Saturday, November 23rd, at 6 pm. 

Holy Trinity Catholic will compete against Keokuk on Saturday for a scrimmage on the road. 

High School Wrestling

The WACO girls’ team will travel to Sigourney for a meet tomorrow, November 19th, at 5 pm.

The Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ team will host a Southeast Iowa Super Conference showdown on Thursday, November 21st.  

The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team will travel to Burlington for the Grayhound Invite on Saturday, November 23rd, at 10 am.

Southeastern Community College

The men’s basketball team demolished Richard J. Daley College over the weekend 100-57. The Blackhawks will be back in action on Friday, November 22nd, at 5 pm on the road. 

College Football

#22 Iowa State reentered the win column and the top 25 after a strong second half performance propelled the Cyclones to a 34-17 victory over the weekend against Cincinnati. Rocco Becht did it all, throwing for 234 yards and a touchdown and rushing for 48 yards and a score in the win. The Cyclones will face off against Utah on Saturday, November 23rd, at 6:30 pm on the road. KILJ 98.5 FM and AM 1130 will be on the call.

Iowa will travel to Maryland on Saturday at 11 am. KILJ 105.5 FM will have the broadcast. 

College Basketball

The #7 Iowa State men’s team will face off against IU Indianapolis tonight at 7 at home.

The Iowa men’s team will host Rider tomorrow, November 19th, at 7.

The #8 Iowa State women’s team will play Northern Iowa on Wednesday, November 20th, at 6 pm on the road. 

The Iowa women’s team defeated a scrappy Drake team yesterday 86-73. Addison O’Grady had a monster game, finishing with a career-high 27 points and her first double-double of the season with 10 rebounds. The Hawkeyes will compete against Kansas on the road at 6 pm on Wednesday.

1949 –  Brooklyn Dodgers infielder Jackie Robinson was named the National League MVP. Robinson became the first African-American player to win the Award.

1979 – Richard Petty won the 29th NASCAR Winston Cup Series, becoming the first driver to win seven Cup championships.

1987 – Cubs Andre Dawson is the first player from a last-place club to win an MVP.
