New London Man Dies in Single Vehicle Crash

Monday, at about 1:15 PM, Des Moines County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 22000 block of Morning Sun Road to investigate a report of a vehicle found in a small creek.

The vehicle was partially submerged in the creek and the body of 60-year-old William Walter Totemeier of New London was found inside. Apparently, Totemeier was driving south on Morning Sun Rd, when he lost control rounding a curve.

The vehicle went into the ditch, rolled over a culvert and came to rest partially in the creek. Authorities believe the accident occurred Sunday evening.

From the Supervisors Meeting

Lynn Whaley of WEMIGA Waste met with the Henry County Board of Supervisors Tuesday morning inorder to provide an update on the County trash collection site.  WEMIGA took over the county operation at the end of March.  During the month of April 53.62 tons were hauled to the regional landfill.  Of that amount 17.54 tons were materials from the recent bulk cleanup.  Whaley also provided a break down of the different materials that were collected like scrap metal, oil and tires.  In answer to questions from the supervisors, Whaley said Friday and Saturday are still the busiest days at the West Washington Street site. At the end of March the board voted to discontinue operations in the four outlaying corners of the county and added Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday hours in Mount Pleasant.

During the supervisors meeting this morning the board approved the Hillcrest Family services lease for 31 hundred square feet of office space at a monthly amount of $2,000.  Hillcrest occupies the west half of the county owned building at 106 N. Jackson.  In 2019 the County suspended $1200 in monthly rent due financial problems for Hillcrest caused by lack of insurance reimbursements.
