In the interest of keeping Henry County residents informed, the Henry County Sheriff’s office has requested KILJ post the daily jail count. During the jail referendum campaign it was publicized that the jail would be able to house additional inmates from surrounding counties and this would generate revenue for Henry County.

Richard “Doc” Taglauer, 86, of Wayland, died April 13, 2022, at his home in Wayland following a short battle with lung cancer.
Celebration of Life will be held 10:00 AM, Saturday, April 16, 2022, at Hope Lutheran Church Germanville with pastor Ryan Dexter officiating. Livestream of the service will be available at the Beatty Peterseim Facebook page. Burial will follow at the Hope Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Friday, April 15, 2022, at the Beatty Peterseim Funeral Home in Wayland with family receiving friends from 4:00-7:00 PM. A memorial fund has been established for Everystep Hospice of Mt. Pleasant and Hope Lutheran Church.
Richard was born August 26, 1935, the son of Edmund and Mildred (Lynn) Taglauer. Graduated from Fairfield High School in 1953. He was united in marriage to Karen Kientz on May 24, 1958, at Hope Lutheran Church.
Richard was a faithful member of the Hope Lutheran Church and Wayland Lions Club. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was a farmer, managed and operated a standard station and later purchased Wayland Carpentry Shop from Glen Reschly in 1980, retiring in 1994 due to MS.
Survivors include his wife Karen of Wayland, son David (Billie) Taglauer of rural Wayland, daughter Cheryl (Igor) Morozov of Wayland, daughter Janet Smith of Mt. Pleasant, sister Karen (Ted) Alderman of Iowa City, grandchildren Allison Smith, Caleb Smith, Tim Morozov, Alexandra Morozov, 5 great-grandchildren, and special dog Fluffy.
Proceeding Richard in death were his parents, one brother Ronald, son Timothy, and grandson Justin.
Mount Pleasant — Rob Zeglen’s Mount Pleasant boys’ golf team will be back on their home course today, when they Panthers host a five-team invite.
Joining the Panthers at Mount Pleasant Golf and Country Club will be Fairfield, Fort Madison, Keokuk and Washington.
The Demons have been red-hot to start their year, led by terrific senior Roman Roth.
Mount Pleasant has been led out of the gates by Reece Kempker, who most recently finished as a runner-up to Roth earlier this week in Washington.
Golfing this evening will get started at 4:00 p.m.
Keokuk — The Mount Pleasant girls’ golf team will travel to Keokuk tonight, as they aim for continued early season success.
Competing at Keokuk tonight will be Burlington, Fairfield, Fort Madison and Washington — along with Mount Pleasant and of course, the host Chiefs.
Stroke play on the links tonight will begin at 4:00 p.m.
Burlington — Coming off a tough 5-4 loss to Fairfield, the Mount Pleasant girls’ tennis team will look to right the ship tonight when they play Burlington.
Tonight’s tilt will be played at Dankwardt Park.
The Panthers have seen numerous players step up so far this season, including No. 1 singles player Savana Walls, who has been the mainstay atop Martha Peterson’s lineup.
Middle of the order players Gisele Fajardo-Pena and Ellie Situmeang have also been important pieces to the team’s success.
This evening’s matchup will begin at 4:30 p.m.
Mount Pleasant — It will be a busy night of track at Evans Field in Mount Pleasant when the Panthers host the Denny White Relays.
White has been a fixture of the track community in Mount Pleasant and the State of Iowa since 1965.
He worked his final State Track meet one year ago.
The Mount Pleasant girls’ will be aiming to win their second straight Denny White Relays title, after winning nine events at last year’s race.
The Panther boys finished seventh at the invite last year, but both teams are running well in the first third of their seasons.
Field events will begin at Mapleleaf Athletic Complex at 4:30 p.m. with running events beginning shortly thereafter.
Burlington — Burlington will welcome in Mount Pleasant tonight for a prep soccer boy-girl doubleheader.
The Panther boys are 1-4 on the year and will look to get back into the win column when they begin tonight at 5:00 p.m.
The team will be seeking their first win since April 1st — a 3-2 win over Danville.
Burlington is 3-0, the Greyhounds blanked Fairfield 2-0 on Monday.
Last year’s SEC champions, the Mount Pleasant girls are 3-1 on the year. The Panthers earned a 10-1 win over Keokuk earlier this week.
Their lone loss is from April 7th, a 5-4 defeat to Washington.
Burlington enters play 2-0 after shutting out Fairfield 6-0 on Monday evening.
The girls’ will play the nightcap, with kick set for 7:00 p.m.
Donnellson — Former Notre Dame Nike and Quincy University standout Taylor Hickey has been named the new head coach of Central Lee girls basketball, the district has announced.
Hickey spent each of the last two seasons as the top lieutenant to Jay Baldwin, who will be stepping down after accumulating a 26-18 record.
Hickey starred in her prep days with Notre Dame where she helped guide the Nikes to the 2014 Class 1A State Championship.
She appeared in over 80 over games for Quincy in her collegiate career.
Central Lee finished this year 13-9, bowing out in the Class 3A, Region 4 quarterfinals to Davenport Assumption.
