College Softball: Mount Mercy Blanks Tigers

Mount Pleasant — Iowa Wesleyan was held to just one hit as Mount Mercy picked up a 10-0 win over the Tigers yesterday at Mapleleaf.

Kara Krieger had Wesleyan’s lone hit, a single, as Mount Mercy’s duo of Jayna Witzany and Madi Sprague teamed up to strike out nine batters over five sparkling innings.

The loss moved Wesleyan to 3-16 overall.

They’ll take part in the CAC Classic this Friday in Nevada, Missouri.

Boys’ Track: Jerrel’s Second Place Finish Leads Mount Pleasant

Mount Pleasant junior Isaac Jerrel finished second in the shot put, as the Panthers finished 12th at the Williamsburg Invite yesterday.

Clear Creek-Amana won the team race with 92 points, while Cedar Rapids Prairie ended in second.

Williamsburg placed third.

Jerrel’s toss of 46 feet, once inch fell five short of winner Brayden Hartman of Washington.

The Panther shuttle hurdle team placed fourth, running 1:07.98. That team was comprised of Will Davidson, Morgan Van Nyhuis, Avin Truong and Bowen Davis.

They ran 1:07.98.

The top Southeast Conference finisher was Washington, who ended 7th in the team race.

Boys’ Track:  Columbus Wins WACO Relays

Columbus racked up 110 points as the Wildcats claimed victory at the WACO Relays yesterday in Wayland.

English Valleys finished in second, while Van Buren placed third.

Columbus’ Kaden Amigon started the scoring with a win in the 400m dash, running 53.08. Isaac Acosta came behind that with an easy win in the 800m, as well.

Host WACO won three events.

Jonah Clark won the shot put with a heave of 41 feet, 3.5 inches. All-State running back Simeon Reichenbach won the hurdles for WACO.

Reichenbach cruised to a time of 15.47 seconds. He also helped orchestrate a win in the Shuttle Hurdle relay.

Joining him there were Zach Schmitz, Mason Miller and Clayton Miller.

Van Buren’s Tyler Stoltz claimed gold in the high and long jump.

He cleared 6 feet, 3.25 inches in the high jump, while launching himself 20 feet, 2 inches in the long.

Girls’ Track: Brumbaugh Rolls Again

Iowa State recruit Jadan Brumbaugh won the shot put again, heaving a toss of 46 feet, 9 inches as the Mount Pleasant girls’ finished in fourth at Williamsburg.

Brumbaugh’s throw again broke her own school record and is the top throw in the state this season.

In the hurdles, Kenna Lamm placed third the senior ran 17.63 for Mount Pleasant.

Panther senior Abby Blint placed fourth in the 1,500m. Blint clocked in at 5:25.24.

Blint also helped the distance medley tea of Mica Carter, Elise Lange and Andrea Lopreato place third in 4:45.21.

Solon won the team title on the girls’ side, while Cedar Rapids Prairie finished in second.

Girls’ Track: WACO Fifth at Home Invite

WACO placed third at their home invite yesterday winning three events.

Ally Rinner, Zoey Dennler and the Shuttle Hurdle team for the Warriors were all crowned victors.

Rinner won the 200m dash in 32.99, Dennler won the hurdles running a time of 184.3 seconds while the Shuttle Hurdle team finished in 1:19.48.

Lone Tree won the team championship while English Valleys placed second.

Springville finished in third.

College Baseball: Wesleyan Clubs Four Homers in Losing Effort

Iowa Wesleyan hit four home runs but could not overcome a four run sixth inning by Viterbo as the V-Hawks earned a 10-5 win yesterday afternoon.

Derek Marrufo opened the scoring for the Tigers with a second inning solo hone run, but the V-Hawks would then score 7 of the game’s next 9 runs to take a 7-2 lead into the 7th inning.

Jackson Van Roekel took the loss for the Tigers, tossing 5.1 innings allowing three earned while striking out four.

The Tigers are now 12-24.

Viterbo improved to 9-23.

Boys’ Golf: Kempker, Matheny Lead Mount Pleasant 

Fairfield — Nick Matheny and Reece Kempker both shot one-over 37’s to pace Mount Pleasant at Fairfield Monday.

The two shared medalist honors, helping the Panthers to a third place finish.

Fairfield won the team championship followed up by Washington. Fort Madison was fourth.

Mount Pleasant finished with 180 strokes.

Roman Roth of Washington finished in second individually, with Fairfield’s Max Weaton placing third.

College Basketball: KILJ Bracket Challenge Winner

KILJ — Hattie Liechty has won the 2022 KILJ Bracket Challenge powered by Press Box Grille and Bar and Wiley’s Interior Furnishings and Design.

Liechty finished with with 1,160 points — 60 better than that of LJ Bracket who ended in second.

DHSH took home third.

This year we had over 90 entries.

“The Room Upstairs” Dinner Theatre Production

A full dinner production of the play “The Room Upstairs” will be presented at 6:30 p.m. at the Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church on Sunday night, April 10th and Monday night April 11th.

The interactive play leads attendees through the “Last Supper” as they watch Christ and his followers celebrate a traditional Passover meal. Guests will observe and take part in what Christ did and said as part of a Passover observance. The evening promises to be educational, moving, and a rewarding time of fellowship.

There is no fee to attend, but a freewill offering will be received. To assure sufficient food, limited admission is by free ticket available at Brown’s Shoe Fit in downtown Mount Pleasant and at the First United Methodist Church in person or by phoned arrangements at 319-385-1740.

The play has previously been performed in Mount Pleasant, most recently in 2019. This year’s production features representation by 12 area churches and is the most diverse cast representing the various Christian groups in the county.

Leading the cast is the role of Jesus played by Mitchell Vine. Mitchell is a first-time participant in the community production directed by Deb Savage.

Other cast members include The Narrator who is Dave Bracht Wagner. Additional cast members include Naomi played by Ashley Hobbs, Rachel played by Mara Hobbs, Peter played by Brian Isles, John played by Niall Damerson, James played by Dave Forrester, Andrew played by Philip Geiser, Bartholomew played by Jim Hughes, Thomas played by Ed Conwell, Matthew played by Elijah Plooster, Philip played by Scott Jennings, James A. played by Mark Kimzey, Thaddeus played by Kevan Zechin, Simon played by Mike McGuire, and Judas Iscariot played by Roger Pross.

Tickets go fast for this event, so interested members of the public should secure dinner availability as soon as possible. At-the-door tickets may only be available if the production is not sold out, so get a ticket in advance to avoid disappointment.

Arts IMPACT Featured Artist

Popular local artist Robin Fisher is now being featured in the Arts IMPACT Little Art Gallery in the Mount Pleasant Public Library until Memorial Day.

Fisher draws what she is most familiar with which is rural life, children being children, animal life around the farm — all presented with her unique perspective which often evokes a smile, a fond memory, or a remembrance of a similar event in the viewer’s life.

Robin prefers working in pencil but often includes pastels or charcoal or pen in her work. Her meticulous work draws in viewers to experience the scene and respond to the image.

The free gallery in the Mount Pleasant Public Library is open to the public Monday thru Thursday 9 am to 8 pm; Friday 9 am to 5:30 pm, and Saturdays 9 am to 2 pm.
