Barbara Jean Howell McAllister

Barbara Jean Howell McAllister, 83, of Mt. Pleasant and formerly of Mt. Union, died Monday, March 21, 2022 at Halcyon House, Washington, Iowa.  She was born March 1, 1939 in Washington County to Lawrence E. and Geneva F. Shebeck Howell.  On June 25, 1961, she was united in marriage to Roger G. McAllister in Columbus Jct., Iowa; He died December 28, 2013.  She was a graduate of Columbus Jct. High School and Iowa State University.

Before marriage and becoming a homemaker, she taught school for one year in Mt. Union.  She was a member of the Mt. Union United Methodist Church and held various offices for United Methodist Women; served on the Winfield-Mt. Union school board for nine years; was a 60 year member of Chapter U T.T.T.; and a member of Winfield VFW auxiliary.  Barbara was active in 4-H in her youth and later became a county 4-H judge and leader of the Canaanettes 4-H Club.

Survivors include her daughter Cynthia Lynn (Phillip) Archer of Bloomfield; son Curtis R. (Lauri Diehl) McAllister of Los Altos, California; grandchildren Sara and David McAllister; brother-in-law Tom Murphy; sister-in-law Nancy Howell; nieces and nephews.  Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother Everette Howell and a sister Beverly Murphy.

The funeral service for Mrs. McAllister will be at 2:00 PM Sunday, March 27, 2022 at the Mt. Union United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Shrimplin officiating.  The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 at the church.  A luncheon will be served after the service with burial following at Trinity Cemetery, rural Mt. Union.   A memorial has been established for Mt. Union United Methodist Church.

Two Men Wounded in Mediapolis Shooting Incident

Sunday, March 20, the Des Moines County Sheriff’s  Department charged Larry Beeding of Mediapolis in connection with a shooting at a Mediapolis home.  Saturday morning early the Department responded to a report that one person had been shot at 411 North Street.  Deputies arrived on scene to discover two men who had suffered gunshot wounds.  The investigation determined that Beeding recklessly discharged a firearm inside the house. A single round fired from a handgun by Beeding killed a family dog, struck Beeding in the hand and struck the second man, Aren Shafer in the upper body.  Both Beeding and Shafer were taken to Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center for treatment and then transferred to University Hospitals in Iowa City.. Shafer is in serious but stable conditoin. Beeding is in custody at the Des Moines County Correctional Center. He is charged with Reckless Use of a Firearm causing Serious Injury and Animal Abuse.

Janet Elaine Asby Schroder (final arrangements)

Janet Elaine Asby Schroder, 85, of Danville, died Saturday, March 19, 2022 at Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House, West Burlington.  She was born February 28, 1937 in Burlington to Frederick Morris and Ethel Marie Bohlen Asby.  On July 16, 1953, she married Elliott “Turk” Schroder in Burlington; He died March 8, 1999.

She was a graduate of Danville High School, and while raising her children, graduated from Surgical Technician Training at Burlington Medical Center where she was employed for more than thirty years.  Janet loved her time on the family farm, was a good sketch artist, enjoyed flower gardening and feeding the wild birds, loved her dogs and cats, was a fun and indulgent grandmother, and especially cherished her time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughter Terri Heffelfinger of Danville; sons David of Danville, previously of California and Miles (Jeana) of Danville; seven grandchildren, Heather (Trent) Henkelvig, Allison (Ken) Jones, Elizabeth Schroder, Tony Schroder, Alexandra Nelson, Calleen Nelson, and Nicholas Nelson; eight great-grandchildren, Reagan, Addy, Hayden, Sawyer, Rylee, Penelope, Olivia, and Logan; sister Mary Ann (Larry) Root of Cedar Rapids and sister-in-law Margie Asby of Solon.  Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son Paul; daughter-in-law Cindy Murray Schroder; son-in-law Robert Heffelfinger; and brother David Asby.

According to her wishes her body has been cremated.  An open house Celebration of Life for Mrs. Schroder will be held April 24, 2022 from 2:00 – 4:00 pm at the Danville Station in Danville.  A memorial has been established for the Danville Community School District Foundation.  Elliott Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.  Online condolences may be left at www.elliottfuneralchapel.com.

Ronald James Barron, 88, of Mt. Pleasant and formerly New London, died Saturday, February 12, 2022.

Nancy Sue Eads

Nancy Sue Eads, 71, of rural West Point, Iowa, passed away at 5:55 a.m. Friday, April 17, 2020, at Park Place Elder Living in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.

She was born on May 27, 1948, in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, the daughter of Tilford and Lela (Hammer) Overton. On May 14, 1977 she married James Raymond Eads in Donnellson, Iowa. He preceded her in death on February 19, 2014.

Survivors include her daughter: Katharine E. (Michael) Warehime of Frederick, Maryland; one son: James T. (Ashley) Eads of West Burlington, Iowa; two grandchildren: Bryce and Camden Warehime; two sisters: Rebecca (Wayne) Conlee of Fairfax, Iowa and Cynthia (Marty) Walker of Cabot, Arkansas; mother-in-law: Ellen Eads; two sisters-in-law: Nancy Tucker and Karen (Quin) Shannon and niece and nephews: Andrew Conlee, Eric Walker, Zachary Walker, MacKenzee Sardo and Nicholas Shannon.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Jim and her parents.

Nancy graduated from Central High School and attended the University of Northern Iowa.  In November 1974, she received a life-saving kidney transplant from her sister, Becky. This was the 150th transplant procedure that had been performed at the University of Iowa Hospitals. For the rest of her life, she would be involved with the Kidney Foundation raising awareness of successful kidney transplants.  She was a board member of Peoples Mutual Insurance and the Clay Grove Cemetery Association.  She was a member of the St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Donnellson, where she worked as secretary for twenty-six years before her retirement in 2019. She enjoyed traveling, reading, crocheting and was very family oriented.

Her body has been entrusted to the crematory of Schmitz Funeral Home for cremation.

Friends may call after 1:00 p.m., Friday, March 25, 2022, at Schmitz Funeral Home in Donnellson, where the family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, March 26, 2022, at Schmitz Funeral Home, Donnellson with Pastor Mike Bennett officiating. The family asks that those in attendance for the visitation and service wear a face cover.

Memorials have been established in her memory for the Clay Grove Cemetery Association or the Kidney Foundation of Iowa and can be mailed to the family at:  Schmitz Funeral Home, P.O. Box 56, Donnellson, Iowa 52625.

Bernice L. Larsen, 95, of Minot, North Dakota and Mt. Pleasant passed away on Saturday, March 12, 2022, at the New London Specialty Care Center in New London.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 26, 2022, at the First Lutheran Church in Minot, North Dakota.  Burial will follow in the Rosehill Memorial Park in Minot, North Dakota.
