Daily Jail Count

In the interest of keeping Henry County residents informed, the Henry County Sheriff’s office has requested KILJ post the daily jail count. During the jail referendum campaign it was publicized that the jail would be able to house additional inmates from surrounding counties and this would generate revenue for Henry County.

Richard (Dick) Wick (final arrangements)

Richard (Dick) Wick, 89, of New London, died Saturday, March 5, 2022 at Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center, West Burlington.  He was born May 5, 1932, in Mt. Pleasant to Dale McClure and Marie Ida Vandersnick Wick.  He was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School and was of the Catholic faith.  On January 10, 1953 he married Marilyn Joyce Nelson in Mt. Pleasant; recently celebrating 69 years of marriage.

He worked at IAAP, sold Moorman feed, and was a die-hard Sunbeam Bread salesman; but the love of his working life was helping Larry Reid farm and later, Joe Lounsbury.  He served in the National Guard and the Army, attaining the rank of Sergeant.  Dick and Marilyn very much enjoyed their extensive travels over the years.  He was a quiet, stubborn, loveable man who recently tolerated two and a half years of pain and isolation.  He will be profoundly missed but finished with his suffering.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Michelle (David) McIntyre of Danville and Cheryl (Danny) Parks of New London; eleven grandchildren; twenty-three great-grandchildren; sister Nancy McDowell; daughter-in-law Pam Wick; sister-in-law Diana Wick Hardy; and brother-in-law Larry Meagher.  He was preceded in death by his parents; sons Tony and Michael; daughter Melanie Boyd; sister Eileen Meagher; and brother Robert Wick.

According to his wishes, his body has been cremated and a private inurnment at Burge Cemetery will be held at a later date.  A Celebration of Life will begin at 3:00 PM Friday, March 11, 2022 at New London VFW Post #7641.  Memorials in his honor have been established for New London Fire and Rescue or the donor’s choice.  Online condolences may be left at www.elliottfuneralchapel.com.

Sunday Afternoon Fire

Sunday at about 4:15 pm the Mount Pleasant Fire Department responded to a call at 705 W. King Drive.  An exhaust fan in a bathroom caught fire.  The fire spread to the attic insulation.  A section of the ceiling and insulation had to be removed by the fire crew so the smoldering fire could be extinguished. Two engines and nine firefighters were on the scene for about 45 minutes.  No injuries were reported.

Mini Dance Marathon at Danville School

Mini Dance Marathon Fundraiser In Memory of Mason Roberts

Mason Matthew Roberts fought a brave, 9-month battle with a very rare disease known as Kaposiform Lymphangiomatosis (KLA). Sadly, Mason passed away on April 30, 2020.  However, throughout the 9-month battle, Mason spent a great deal of time in the University of Iowa Hospital.  U of I Dance Marathon had a huge part of his life.  The volunteers that are a part of Dance Marathon were there to play video games, watch movies, play cards, or just hang out with Mason to break up the day for him.  Not only did the volunteers do this for Mason for all the time he was in the hospital, but also every other patient on the 11th floor (pediatric oncology in-patient unit).  This fundraiser is a way to give back to Dance Marathon after all they have done for our family.
