Men’s College Basketball: Iowa’s Murray Named to the Wooden Watch List

Iowa City — Iowa forward Keegan Murray has been named to the Wooden Award Top 20 watch list, the award announced Monday.

Murray is scoring 22.4 points per game — the fifth-most in the nation — and is shooting 56.5% from the field.

The Hawkeyes will hook up with No. 16 Ohio State tomorrow in Columbus, with tip scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Iowa is 14-7 overall and 4-6 in Big Ten play.

During the jail referendum campaign it was publicized that the jail would be able to house additional inmates from surrounding counties and this would generate revenue for Henry County.

Mitchell L. “Mike” Lowe

Mitchell L. “Mike” Lowe, 69, of Mt. Pleasant, formerly of Ottumwa and Pella, died Monday, January 31, 2022 in the Hospice of Unity Point/St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center in Cedar Rapids.

In accordance with Mike’s wishes, no services will be held. The Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 N. Main St., Mt. Pleasant, is assisting the family with the arrangements. Online condolences may be directed to www.kimzeyfuneralhome.com.

Mitchell Lee “Mike” Lowe was born October 31, 1952 in Ottumwa. He was the son of Henry Luther and Margaret Lucille (Steele) Lowe.

Mike was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the United States Army.

On February 14, 2005 in Knoxville, IA, Mike was united in marriage to Sheryl Marie Moore.

Mike worked for the John Deere Company in Waterloo, IA. For several years, Mike was a security guard for Iowa Wesleyan University.

In his spare time, Mike was a gifted artist. Mike held a deep passion and love for motorcycles and 4-wheelers. He treasured his drag racing car “Red”, which he kept immaculately polished. He raced “Red” often at the drag strip in Eddyville. Also in Eddyville, Mike held the title of “Burnout King”.

Those thankful for sharing in Mike’s life include his wife, Sheryl Moore of Mt. Pleasant; 3 children and their spouses – Justin & Crystal McDonald of Houghton, Krista & Daniel McAllister of Fairfield and Jamie & Matthew Krogmeier of Mt. Pleasant, and 8 grandchildren – Gabriella, Gracelyn, Mayrose, Rockwell and Evanora McAllister, Lawson and Addyson Krogmeier and Korbyn McDonald.

Mike’s parents precede him in death.

Boys’ Prep Basketball: Mount Pleasant Cruises Needs OT for Regina; Other Prep Finals

Mount Pleasant 55, Regina 43 (OT) 

Mount Pleasant needed overtime to do it, but won their fourth straight 55-43 over Iowa City Regina last night.

Four Panthers scored in double figures, with Payton Hagans leading the way with 15 points.

Dewon Trent finished with 14 points and six rebounds. Owen Vansickel had 12 while Aidan Ashton had 10.

Mount Pleasant is now 8-9 on the season, meanwhile Iowa City Regina fell to 5-14.

The Regals were led by Landon Pietrzak’s game-high 19 points — he canned three triples.

New London 88, Central Lee 45 

New London stayed hot with an easy 88-45 win over Central Lee yesterday.

The Tigers jumped out to a 34-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back, extending their leads to 37 at halftime.

Devon Swanson had 17 points to lead the Tigers. Blaise Porter finished with 16 points while Kooper Schulte continued his nice run of play with 13.

New London upped their ledger to 15-1, they’re now 13-1 in Super Conference play.

Winfield-Mount Union 60, Louisa-Muscatine 34 

Cam Buffington had 22 points and eight rebounds while Abram Edwards added 10 points as Winfield-Mount Union put it in automatic in a 60-34 win over Louisa-Muscatine.

Andrew Brown chipped in with eight points for the Wolves, who used a 24-9 third quarter run to pull away.

The win moved Winfield-Mount Union to 17-1 on the season.

Xander Bieri had 16 for the Falcons, who are now 2-15.

Danville 39, WACO 37 (OT) 

Danville scored the lone basket in overtime, holding on to a 39-37 thriller over WACO yesterday.

Drake Johnson had 11 points to lead the Bears while Caiden Gourley had 10.

Colten Leichty led the Warriors with eight points.

Danville improved to 16-2 overall and 12-2 in Super Conference play.

WACO is now 14-4.

Bradie Buffington had 12 points to lead the way as the Lady Wolves earned a hard-fought 37-32 senior night victory over Louisa-Muscatine yesterday.

Anna Anderson poured in nine points while Melina Oepping finished with seven.

Kaylee Corbin had 18 points for the Falcons, who dropped to 13-4.

Winfield-Mount Union improved to 16-3.

No. 10 (2A) Mediapolis 69, Wapello 37

The dream of the perfect season remained intact for No. 10 Mediapolis in a 69-37 win over Wapello, yesterday.

Hallie Mohr had a game-high 20 points while Payton Bush added 16 for the Bullettes.

Serah Shafer had 11 points and three helpers for the Arrows.

Mediapolis is now 18-0 and a perfect 14-0 in Super Conference showdowns.

Wapello dropped to 9-10.

Central Lee 67, New London 26

Alivia Myhre outscored New London herself with 28 points to lead Central Lee to a 67-26 win over New London.

Myhre drilled six triples while Makayla Morrison flirted with a triple double with 11 points, 11 boards and eight assists.

The Hawks led 23-5 at the end of the first quarter and improved to 12-7 on the year.

New London is 0-20.

Danville 62, WACO 32

Cassidy Yaley had 13 points as Danville stayed hot with a 62-32 win over WACO.

Taylor Moore came off the bench for 12 points while Kenna Furnald — a state track qualifier from a year ago — had 11.

Danville is now 9-10 and 8-7 in league play.

WACO slumped to 8-11.

Men’s College Basketball: Drake’s DeVries Named MVC Newcomer of the Week

Drake men’s basketball freshman swingman Tucker DeVries was selected as Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week, the league announced yesterday.

DeVries helped the Bulldogs to a pair of victories this past week over Illinois State and Loyola with an average of 15.5 points per game.

Drake will play at Indiana State tonight before welcoming in in-state rival UNI to the Knapp Center on Saturday.

The Bulldogs are 16-6 this year and 7-2 in MVC play.

Iowa Pork Regional Conferences Set for February 21-24

 

 

(Clive, Iowa) February 1, 2022 – The Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA) is inviting the state’s pig farmers to attend one of four Iowa Pork Regional Conferences being held in February. The events are being held at different locations from Feb. 21 through Feb. 24.

 

In addition to the regional conference program that runs from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. each day, a separate morning session from 9 a.m. to noon will provide Pork Quality Assurance (PQA) Plus® training. The PQA Plus training is sponsored by IPPA and provided by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach (ISUEO).

 

There are four topics for the afternoon sessions on swine health, economic issues, marketing opportunities, and ISUEO resources for pig farmers. “The farmer members of our producer education committee partnered with the Iowa Pork Information Center to select topics and identify relevant speakers,” says Jamee Eggers, IPPA producer education director.

 

The locations of the conferences are:

·    Monday, Feb. 21 – Orange City at the Sioux County Extension Office, 400 Central Ave. NW, Suite 700

·    Tuesday, Feb. 22 – Osceola at the Clarke County Fairgrounds Events Center, 2070 W. McLane St., Hwy. 34

·    Wednesday, Feb. 23 – Nashua at the Borlaug Learning Center, 3327 290th St.

·    Thursday, Feb. 24 –  Washington at the Washington County Extension Office, 2223 250th St.

 

Topics and speakers for the afternoon conferences are:

·    Swine Health UpdateDr. Chris Rademacher of the Iowa Pork Industry Center will provide an update on current swine health issues, such as PRRS, E. Coli, African swine fever, vaccines and biosecurity

·    Economic Issues Update – ISU Extension Livestock Economist Dr. Lee Schulz will give an overview of some economic decision tools that ISU has developed for pig farmers, including tools coming from the Pig Survivability project.

·    The Greatest Marketing Opportunity in the History of Agriculture is at Your Doorstep Joe Kerns, Partners for Production Agriculture will review grain and livestock markets, layered over weather and trade situations that may offer opportunities to save on your feed budget and take advantage of greater pork demand.

·    Finding the Right Resources – A review of decision-making tools that Iowa State University Extension Swine Specialists can provide for you to solve production problems and other issues on your pig farm.

Louisa County Historic Preservation Receives Grant

From Sioux City to Muscatine, the Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs (IDCA) is investing in projects to preserve the state’s historical assets. The department announced Tuesday it has awarded $118,626 in grants for 14 historic preservation projects through the IDCA’s State Historic Preservation Office Certified Local Government program.  One of those projects is in the KILJ listening area. Louisa County Historic Preservation Commission will receive $2,872. The commission will use the grant to hire a preservation professional to nominate the Fairview Community Church in Wapello to the National Register of Historic Places. Iowa has one of the largest Certified Local Government programs in the country, with 90 cities and counties that rely on this state-local partnership for training and technical assistance to stabilize historic neighborhoods and revitalize downtowns. Through this program, the State Historic Preservation Office collaborates with local governments on preserving historic properties, establishing historic preservation commissions, and enacting supportive local codes and ordinances.
