College Football: Central Readies for Showdown with Wheaton

Pella — Central hosts Wheaton of Illinois Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs.

The Dutch advanced after a 61-35 win over Bethel of Minnesota and coach Jeff McMartin’s team hopes the home field is an advantage again.

You know we get down the road in the playoffs, whoever you play is a great team. We want to use this to our advantage and it allows us to stay a bit more into our routine” McMartin said.

Wheaton ousted Central from the playoffs in 2019 with a 49-13 victory.

Record setting quarterback Blaine Hawkins directs a Central passing game that averages 400 yards per contest.

A Dutch run game that is averaging 208 yards will try to solve a Wheaton defense that yields only 37 yards per game.

They’re talented upfront and they’re talented at linebacker. You just have to do what you can and be willing to throw the football if you want to move the ball on these guys.” 

Former Mount Pleasant standouts Brody Bender, Jack Johnson and Chase Williamson will all be on the sidelines for the Dutch this weekend.

College Basketball: Iowa to Host Portland State Tonight

Iowa City — Iowa sophomore Keegan Murray has quickly adapted to his role as the go to guy for the Iowa Hawkeyes.

Through five games Murray is averaging 25 and a half points and more than nine rebounds.

He has posted career highs in each of the last two games and is looking to do that again tonight when they Hawkeye men play host to Portland State.

“Last year I was playing a different role and this year I wanted to be assertive as much as I can. I have been getting more confident by the game and that’s a big thing for us.” Murray said.

Tonight’s game will tip at 6:00 p.m. from Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

This will be Iowa’s last tune-up tilt before taking on Virginia and No. 3 Purdue next week.

National Football League: Bears Escape, Raiders Upset Cowboys, Bills Roll

KILJ — The Chicago Bears got a game-winning field goal from Cairo Santos as they escaped Detroit with a 16-14 win yesterday.

Andy Dalton completed 24-of-39 passes for 317 yards and one score.

Detroit stayed winless at 0-10-1.

In Dallas, Derek Carr passed for 373 yards and one touchdown as Las Vegas upset the Cowboys 36-33.

Dallas has lost two straight matchups.

Dak Prescott had 375 yards and two scores in the loss.

In the nightcap, Josh Allen threw for four touchdowns as Buffalo ransacked New Orleans 31-6.

The Saints have dropped to 5-6.

Buffalo improved to 7-4.

Don Roger Bradley

Don Roger Bradley, 84 of Keosauqua passed away November 23, 2021 at the Keosauqua Health Care Facility in Keosauqua Iowa.  Per Don’s request his body his body has been cremated and no service will be held. Don was born March 7th, 1937 to Duane Bradley and Letha (Berstler) Bradley in Argyle Iowa and attended Argyle High School.  He married Alma Lois Jannings on February 10, 1957.

 

Don worked in road construction for most of his career. He was a heavy equipment operator, mechanic, heavy equipment truck driver and foremen later in his career. He was very proud of his contribution and participation in building the Lake Sugema Indian Creek watershed project. After Don retired he worked part time for his Brother-in-law, Fred Zeitler doing farm work.

 

Don lived in Milton, Iowa the majority of his life until moving to Ottumwa, Iowa after his retirement. Don enjoyed working on autos, small engines, taking long walks and playing cards.

 

He is survived by his wife Lois of Ottumwa, four children, Becky (Joe) Rehm of Olathe, Kansas; Dusty (Lindy) Bradley of Pella, Iowa; Lindi (Jeremy) Thomas of Milton, Iowa and Doug (Regenia) Bradley of Ottumwa, Iowa, two brothers; Dean (Sharon) Bradley of Montrose, Iowa and David (Mary) Bradley of Greeley, Colorado, numerous grand-children and great-grandchildren.

 

In addition to his parents, Don was proceeded in death by a Brother Darrell Bradley of Keokuk, Iowa and a sister-in-law, Nancy Zeitler of Douds, Iowa.

Women’s College Basketball: Wesleyan Routs Grinnell

KILJ — Iowa Wesleyan led 12-4 after one quarter and used a 16-2 second frame run to pull away for a 78-38 win over Grinnell last night.

Brielle Baker led all scorers with 22 points, finishing with five steals, four boards and three assists.

Brittany West added 18 points and six rebounds, while Kyla Moore ended with a 12-point, 10-rebound double double.

Iowa Wesleyan held Grinnell to just 24% from the field in the win.

Wesleyan will be off until Saturday when they travel to Columbia, Missouri for a matchup with Columbia College.

Tip is set for 12:00 p.m.

Men’s College Basketball: Cyclones Upset No. 25 Xavier

Brooklyn (N.Y) — Izaiah Brockington poured in a game-high 30 points as Iowa State upended No. 25 Xavier last night in the first round of the NIT Season Tip-Off in Brooklyn.

Tyrese Hunter chipped in with 19 points and four boards, while George Conditt added 10 points and five rebounds.

The Clones will attempt to stay hot when they battle upstart Memphis in the tournament championship on Friday night.

Tip is set for 8:30 p.m.
