Postseason Football
WACO had the tough assignment of clashing with #3 Don Bosco last night and turnovers and missed opportunities spelled the end for the Warriors as they allowed 41 unanswered points in a 48-7 loss.
WACO showed promise early on despite fumbling twice on their first two drives, but a sustained drive with a 22-yard screen pass from Clayton Miller to Isaac Rich acting as the catalyst led to a short Louden Huisenga rushing touchdown to tie the game at seven. The Don defense would not allow another point as they stopped the Warriors twice in the redzone, while Kyler Knaack finished the night with six total touchdowns in the win.
WACO finished the season with an 8-2 record and despite the loss, head coach Chad Edeker was quick to mention how successful this squad was,
“We’ve come so far since Week 3 when we lost to Iowa Valley and we were sort of scratching our head, what we’re going to do and these kids really responded. You know, we found a running game, you know, we did a really nice job of running the ball the last two weeks. You know, we did a lot of stuff. Our D line came together and started playing great, you know. It stings right now, but I tell the boys, you know, as we get through the end of the season here, we get to our banquet stuff. This was a really good year. I mean we you know second round of playoffs are nothing to scoff at him and the eight [teams] that are left are guaranteed #1 are playing right now and you know and we were #2 and we fought hard to get where we were.”
The Dons will face off against #5 Gladbrook-Reinbeck on Thursday, November 7th, after the Rebels handled Iowa Valley 57-32.
#10 West Burlington/Notre Dame fell to #8 Anamosa last night 48-20. The Falcons finished the season with an 8-2 record.
Mediapolis had Noah Schmidgall rush for 233 yards and a score, but #9 Mid-Prairie proved to be too much as the Golden Hawks eliminated the Bulldogs last night 35-14. Mediapolis ended the season with a 5-5 record. Mid-Prairie will take on PCM on Friday, November 8th, at 7 on the road.
In Class 3A, #5 Mt. Vernon trounced Carroll 42-6 and Assumption was shutout by Wahlert Catholic 41-0. The Mustangs will travel to take on Algona on Friday at 7 pm.
Postseason Volleyball
#3 Holy Trinity Catholic will take on #6 BCLUW in the first round of the state tournament on Tuesday, November 5th, at 8:25 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 8:05 pm.
The other Class 1A matchups include: Ankeny Christian will face off against Don Bosco, Riverside will compete against North Tama, and Saint Ansgar will take on Janesville.
Class 5A will start off the tournament with Pleasant Valley facing off against Waukee on Monday, November 4th, at noon. Ankeny Centennial will take on Cedar Falls, Dowling Catholic will compete against Indianola, and Ankeny will tango with Waukee Northwest.
Class 4A’s top seed Xavier will face off against Sergeant Bluff-Luton on Monday at 4 pm. Clear Creek Amana will take on Pella. Bishop Heelan will compete against Carlisle and North Scott will look to advance over Glenwood.
Class 3A will start the day on Tuesday with Mt. Vernon going against Mid-Prairie at 10 am. Wahlert Catholic versus Kuemper Catholic at noon. Western Christian will take on Sioux Center and West Delaware will face off against Assumption.
The state tournament matchups for Class 2A will be Denver versus Boyden-Hull, Dike-New Hartford will take on Aplington-Parkersburg, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont will compete against Regina Catholic, and Beckman Catholic will face off against South Hardin. The tournament will begin at 2 pm on Tuesday for Class 2A.
High School Cross Country
The Class 3A boys’ and girls’ state meets ran yesterday and the Pella girls’ team and Gilbert boys’ team dominated their way to state championships. For the girls’ race, Washington finished in 12th as a team with Iris Dahl claiming 32nd place with a time of 19 minutes and 41 seconds followed by Kendall Hinrichsen grabbing 74th place.
For individual runners, Fort Madison’s Avery Rump took 45th place and Mt. Pleasant’s Quintrie Lee finished with a time of 20 minutes and 20 seconds, which was good enough for 63rd place. Hannah Karre for Keokuk grabbed 67th place.
On the boys’ side, Washington had Andrew Rees lead the Demons with a 13th place time of 16 minutes and 20 seconds as the team finished in 7th. Tyler Alderton claimed 28th place.
Lastly, Jacob Shottenkirk and Riley Tripp of Fort Madison took 83rd and 89th place, respectively.
The Class 1A and Class 2A state meets will run today with the Class 1A girls’ race leading the way at 10:30 am. For the Class 2A boys’ race, Mediapolis will have a trio of runners competing in Mason Lindeen, Will Schmidgall, and Simon Wendell. On the girls’ side, Hannah Fruehling and Kaitlyn Kipp will run for Notre Dame/West Burlington.
For Class 1A, the Danville, Van Buren County, and Columbus boys’ teams will be competing along with the Danville girls’ team. For the qualifying individuals, Winfield-Mt. Union’s Kohlby Newsom and WACO’s Jude Dykstra will participate in the boys’ race, while the duo of Rylee Phillips and Kayley Snowgren of Van Buren County will run in the girls’ race.
Southeastern Community College
The volleyball team will face off against Des Moines Area Community College on Wednesday, November 6th, in the Region 11 Quarterfinals at 7 pm.
College Football
Iowa will take on Wisconsin tonight at 6:30 at home. KILJ 105.5 FM will have the broadcast.
#11 Iowa State will be back in action today at 2:30 pm at home against Texas Tech. KILJ 98.5 FM and AM 1130 will be on the call.

Daylight Saving Time will end on Sunday morning at 2 am local time for essentially the entire nation. The exceptions include Arizona, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands and American Samoa.
In 1966, Congress passed the Uniform Time Act, which standardized the length of Daylight-Saving Time. The Energy Policy Act passed in 2005 extended Daylight-Saving Time across the nation. Daylight Saving Time will end on the first Sunday in November: tomorrow morning.

The Mt. Pleasant School District announced their September/October 2024 Students of Character. These high school students have demonstrated trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. Briar Bender, Jesse Zimmer, Allviah Lake, Ashlynn Beauchamp, and Sarai Sanchez were selected. Students are nominated by MPCHS faculty each month.
General Election 2024 is just days away. The Auditor’s Office is open today (Saturday, November 2, 2024) from 9:00am – 5:00pm for early voting. The last day for Early Voting is Monday, November 4th, 8:00 am 4:30 pm. at the Henry County Auditor’s Office at the Court House in Mt. Pleasant.
On Election Day, Tuesday, November 5, 2024, voters must vote at your polling place (Precinct Place). Polling places will be open from 7:00am – 8:00pm.
