Postseason Football

The semifinal round for all seven classes is scheduled to start this week at the UNI-Dome and run through Saturday, November 16th. Here’s a look at the schedule.

8-Player football will kick off the action tomorrow, November 13th, with Remsen St. Mary’s facing off against Bishop Garrigan at 10 am. Gladbrook-Reinbeck versus Lenox will follow at 1 pm.

Madrid and West Hancock will start off the Class A semifinal matchups on Thursday, November 14th, at 10 am, followed by Tri-Center taking on Saint Ansgar at 1 pm. Class 4A will round out the day with Lewis Central competing against Pella at 4 pm and North Scott and North Polk playing at 7 pm.

Classes 1A and 5A will play on Friday, November 15th, with Wilton and Grundy Center kicking off the day at 10 am, while Hinton and Dike-New Hartford will play at 1 pm. Valley will take on Dowling Catholic at 4 pm and Southeast Polk will look for a chance to repeat with a matchup against Iowa City Liberty at 7 pm.

On Saturday, Spirit Lake will face off against PCM at 10 am and Van Meter will take on West Lyon at 1 pm for Class 2A. Rounding out the day will be Class 3A with Wahlert Catholic competing against Sergeant Bluff-Luton at 4 pm and Mt. Vernon slated to play Humboldt at 7 pm.

High School Bowling

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union (IGHSAU) released a tentative bowling classification list for the 2024-2025 season yesterday and here’s where our local teams rest.

Keokuk, Burlington, and Mt. Pleasant remain in Class 2A as the Chiefs are looking to defend their individual and team championships from a season ago. In Class 1A will be Washington, Fairfield, and West Burlington.

The Panthers will get their season underway on December 3rd against West Burlington on the road.

Southeastern Community College

The men’s basketball will face off against Highland Community College tomorrow, November 13th, at 7 pm.

College Football

Iowa State will face off against Cincinnati on Saturday, November 16th, at 7 pm at home. KILJ 98.5 FM and AM 1130 will be on the call.

Iowa’s Jay Higgins was recognized as one of the semifinalists for the Lott IMPACT Trophy, an award given annually to the nation’s top defensive player who best exemplifies the characteristics of Ronnie Lott by making an impact on and off the field. Higgins currently ranks 10th in the nation in tackles with 98 for the season to go along with three interceptions and two forced fumbles. He is the only player in the nation with 90-plus tackles and three interceptions. Additionally, he has volunteered his time at Special Olympics and Safe Haven Animal Shelter to name a few. The last Hawkeye to win the award was Josey Jewell in 2017. 

College Basketball

The #7 Iowa State men’s team handled business against Kansas City last night 82-56. The Cyclones found most of their help from off the bench with Curtis Jones nailing a trio of three pointers to finish the night with a team high 20 points. Milan Momcilovic added 16 points off of four three pointers of his own. The Cyclones will face off against IU Indianapolis on Monday, November 18th, at 7 pm at home.

The Iowa men’s team will stay at home to take on South Dakota tonight at 8.

The #8 Iowa State women’s team will compete against St. Thomas on Thursday, November 14th, at 6:30 pm at home.

The Iowa women’s team will host Toledo tomorrow, November 13th, at 6 pm. 

This Day in Sports History

1892 – Pudge Heffelfinger receives $500 to become the first professional football player in the Allegheny Athletic Association’s 4-0 win over the Pittsburgh Athletic Club.

1990 – “The Body Bag Game.” After Eagles coach Buddy Ryan threatened to beat Washington so badly “they’ll have to be carted off in body bags” the Eagles defense scored two touchdowns winning 28–14, knocking six players out of the game.

2019 – Former Houston Astros MLB pitcher Mike Fiers reveals the team secretly “stole signs” via camera from visiting teams during the 2015-17 seasons; communication between opposing pitchers and catchers were intercepted and relayed to Astros batters.

Jerry L. “Snuffy” Smith, SERVICES PENDING

Jerry L. “Snuffy” Smith, 80, of Trenton passed away on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Funeral Services are pending at this time at the Murphy Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant.

Gregory Dwight Hohl

Gregory Dwight Hohl, 70, of Donnellson, Iowa, passed away at 8:45 p.m. Sunday, November 10, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa.

He was born on March 7, 1954, in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Dwight and Freda (Ball) Hohl. On August 15, 1976, he married Kathy Hentzel at St. Paul United Church of Christ in Donnellson, Iowa.

Survivors include his wife: Kathy; two children: Adam (Julie) Hohl and Amber (Blake) Conlee both of Donnellson, Iowa; grandchildren: Jacob and Addison Hohl and Gunner  Conlee; siblings: Margo (Randy) Sprenger and Leslie Judson both of Donnellson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandchild: Baby Conlee.

Greg was a son, husband, dad and grandpa. He was a farmer that loved the land. He enjoyed designing and building creative equipment to solve practical problems on the farm. He took seriously his responsibility to help feed the world. He regarded himself as a caretaker of the land, knowing that someday that legacy would be passed to his children and grandchildren. Greg enjoyed spending time with his family and traveling with Kathy.

A visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 13, 2024, at Schmitz Funeral Home in Donnellson. The family will not be present.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, November 14, 2024, at Schmitz Funeral Home in Donnellson with Pastor Michael Bennett officiating.

Burial will be at Evangelical Cemetery in Donnellson, Iowa. Following the burial, a time of  remembrance and a luncheon will be held at the Lee County Fairgrounds Learning Center in Donnellson. Everyone is welcome.

Memorials have been established in his memory for the Lee County Food Pantry or Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.

Henry County Sheriff App Coming Soon

Sheriff McNamee and Henry County celebrate the five-year mark for the new Mount Pleasant Correctional Facility. Sheriff give us a quick update.

 

Sheriff mentions the Jail being right on track with this years budget. Revenue reached Three Million in August, and is now at $3,264,969. Up $264,969 in three months. As today is Veterans day, Henry County has many deputies in the department that are veterans or active military. Sherrif McNamee recognizes their efforts.

 

Sheriff also talks about a Henry County App that should be launching at the beginning of the year.

 

Sheriff McNamee also informed KILJ that New London School District has decided to make their school resource officer Full Time. Starting today, Deputy Preston Roberts will be onsite full time for the rest of the school year.

The men’s basketball team has started the year 5-0 after narrowly escaping with a 57-56 win over the weekend against Three Rivers Community College. The Blackhawks will face off against Highland Community College on Wednesday, November 13th, at 7 pm.

College Football

Iowa State’s defense was outmatched as Kansas’ dual threat quarterback Jalon Daniels finished with 363 all-purpose yards and three total touchdowns in a 45-36 win over the Cyclones. Rocco Becht produced 363 passing yards and three scores through the air, connecting with Jaylin Noel for 167 yards and two of the touchdowns. Iowa State’s second consecutive loss knocked the Cyclones out of the top 25. They will face off against Cincinnati on Saturday, November 16th, at 7 pm at home. KILJ 98.5 FM and AM 1130 will be on the call.

Iowa is on their bye week.

College Basketball

The Iowa men’s team will stay at home to take on South Dakota tomorrow, November 12th, at 8 pm. 

The #6 Iowa State men’s team will face off against Kansas City at home tonight at 7 pm.

The #8 Iowa State women’s team dominated Southern University yesterday 84-56. Addy Brown and Audi Crooks each tabbed a double-double with Brown collecting 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Crooks cashed in for 17 points and grabbed 11 boards. The Cyclones will compete against St. Thomas on Thursday, November 14th, at 6:30 pm at home.

The Iowa women’s team outscored Virginia Tech 48 to 26 between the first and third quarters to exit with a comfortable 71-52 victory last night. Lucy Olsen paced the team with 20 points followed by Addison O’Grady, who shot perfect from the floor, with 18 points. The Hawkeyes will host Toledo on Wednesday, November 13th, at 6 pm.

1959 – Seals Stadium, a minor league baseball park and temporary home of MLB Giants, in San Francisco, California was demolished.

1981 – MLB Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Fernando Valenzuela becomes the first MLB rookie to win a Cy Young Award.

1997 – NHL’s new Columbus franchise (scheduled to begin play in 2000) announced the team’s name would be the “Blue Jackets” after soldiers in the Union army during the American Civil War.

Dorothy Jean Helphrey,

Dorothy Jean Helphrey, 92, of Winfield, passed away on Sunday, November 10, 2024 at Sunrise Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 13, 2024 at the Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral & Cremation Services of Winfield. Burial will follow at Winfield-Scott Township Cemetery. A visitation will be held Tuesday, November 12, 2024 from 3:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The family will not be present. Memorials may be directed to the Winfield First Responders or to Sunrise Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in memory of Dorothy Jean.  Online condolences may be left for the family at www.sandhfuneralservice.com.

Dorothy Jean was born September 16, 1932 at her home farm in Winfield, Iowa, the daughter of Earl H. and Nellie (Fye) Kellogg. She graduated from Winfield High School and worked as a secretary for Cudahy Packing Company and for Iowa Southern Utilities in Winfield. Dorothy Jean was united in marriage to Wendell Harry Helphrey on December 11, 1954 in Winfield.

Dorothy Jean was a life-long farmer, working alongside her husband and son. She attended the First Presbyterian Church in Winfield and was a member of the Smokey Hall Neighborhood Club and a pinochle card club. Dorothy Jean was also a Girl Scout Leader and she volunteered at Midwest Old Threshers. She enjoyed attending the Iowa State Fair for over 80 years. Dorothy Jean loved gardening, reading, crafts, and she was a great cook. She loved attending Bluegrass festivals and baking with her granddaughter and great-granddaughter.

She will be deeply missed by her son, Kurtis (Kathy) Helphrey of Winfield; daughter, Karen (Mark) Garrett of Wayland; grandchildren: Katy (Michael) Black and Klinton (Sidney) Garrett; great-grandchildren: Madden Black, Karsyn Black, Kellon Black, and Lee Garrett; and her nieces and nephews.

Dorothy Jean was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2021; and two brothers, Dale (Helen) Kellogg and Billy (Elva) Kellogg.

MPHS Culinary Arts Program Wins 2nd In Fall Iron Chef

Several Mount Pleasant High School students took a trip to Indian Hills Community College on to compete in the Fall Iron Chef competition. The Culinary Arts Program won 2nd place in the competition. Congratulations to the Mount Pleasant High School Culinary Arts Team; Tulip Lien, Alayna Wagner, Lexi Murphy, Elizabeth Crull, Annette Reynolds, & Max Heater.
