HCHC Offering Mammography Screening for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Early detection is the best protection against breast cancer. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Henry County Health Center will offer screening mammograms with no appointment necessary on Friday, October 18. Normal billing processes will apply.

On October 18, anyone over the age of 40 is invited to get a routine screening mammogram between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. at HCHC with the following guidelines:

  • Must be over the age of 40.
  • Routine screening mammograms only.
  • Must be at least one year since your last mammogram for insurance purposes.
  • No appointment necessary but must register at the health center registration areas near the main entrance.
  • Patients must designate a physician or advanced practice provider to receive the report.
  • Normal billing processes will apply.

HCHC patients receive advanced breast imaging with HCHC’s 3-D mammography. Breast tomosynthesis, often referred to as 3-D mammography, allows doctors to see masses and distortions associated with cancers and precancerous cells significantly more clearly than conventional 2-D mammography.

For more information about mammography at HCHC, contact the Diagnostic Imaging Department at 319-385-6158. On October 18, no appointment is required for a routine screening mammogram; just register at the registration areas near the front entrance of the hospital. Another Work Session Set for Henry County Supervisors

There will be a second work session for the Henry County Supervisors, in which the only item on the agenda is to discuss the alternative energy overlay district. This meeting will take place on Tuesday, October 8th, at 10:00am in the Henry County Courthouse. At the regular supervisors meeting on Thursday morning, board chair Moeller said it is clear that the 3-man board has more to discuss before bringing this matter to a public hearing.

Also, at the meeting on Thursday, Shelly Barber, auditor, reminded the room that early voting will begin on October 16th and will be open Monday-Friday from 8:00am-4:30pm. The courthouse will open on Saturday, November 2nd, from 9-5pm for early voting as well.

At a recent board meeting, the assistant county attorney voiced his opinion that the proposed alternate energy ordinance put forth by the Henry County Watchmen LLC would not hold up in court. Multiple people were upset that he did not elaborate on what parts of the proposed Watchmen ordinance are not defensible. Steven Giebelhausen addressed these comments today, saying that he will not be making his legal opinions over this issue to the public, as it is a breach of ethical duties and could be illegal. If a board member wants to discuss the ordinance with him, that is fine.

Absentee Ballots to be Mailed on October 16th

The General Election is just over one month away now, and the Henry County Auditor’s office would like to remind voters that Henry County voters have not yet received their ballot in the mail. The Henry County Auditor’s Office will mail all requested absentee ballots to be sent to their home on October 16th.

This is also the same day that early voting will begin at the Henry County Courthouse on the second floor in the conference room.  Please bring your ID with you.

Early voting is open Monday through Friday 8am – 4:30 pm and also on Saturday, November 2nd the Courthouse will be open from 9 am to 5 pm. If anyone has any questions, please call the Henry County Auditor’s Office at (319) 385-0756

High School Football

Mt. Pleasant will celebrate their Homecoming tonight against Washington at 7:30 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 7:15 pm.

Danville will travel to Van Buren County tonight at 7 pm.

WACO will celebrate their senior night tonight at 7 pm against New London. 

Mediapolis will host Mid-Prairie tonight at 7:30 pm. 

Columbus will hit the road to compete against Louisa-Muscatine at 7 pm tonight. 

Central Lee will celebrate their homecoming tonight at 7:30 pm against West Burlington/Notre Dame.

Fairfield will take on Williamsburg tonight at 7:30 pm on the road. 

Wapello will host Lisbon at 7 pm tonight.

Winfield-Mt. Union will face off against Iowa Valley tonight at 7 pm at home. 

High School Volleyball

Holy Trinity Catholic handled Burlington Notre Dame in straight sets last night by scores of 25-12, 25-20, and 25-23. Adalyn Kruse and Presley Myers combined for 25 kills with Myers adding a team leading three blocks. The Crusaders will face off against Central Lee for senior night on Thursday, October 10th, at 7:30 pm at home.

West Burlington picked up their 30th victory of the season with a sweep over Central Lee (25-23, 25-13, and 25-21). Taylor Jones tabbed eight kills and four blocks for the Hawks. Central Lee will take on Danville on Tuesday, October 8th, at home to celebrate their senior night at 7:30 pm. 

Wapello swept Highland last night by scores of 25-12, 25-22, and 25-11. Annaka Greiner collected 31 assists and two aces in the winning effort. The Arrows will square off against Hillcrest Academy on Tuesday at 7:30 pm on the road. 

Mediapolis needed a fourth set but fended off New London, winning 3-1 by scores of 25-22, 25-14, 24-26, and 25-20. Maddy Carter led the Bulldogs with 12 kills, while Bryn Wright tallied 32 assists. Mediapolis will travel to Burlington Notre Dame on Tuesday at 7 pm. 

New London will host a tournament tomorrow, October 5th, with West Burlington, Van Buren County, Danville, Burlington Notre Dame, and Columbus all competing. 

Fairfield fell to Williamsburg last night 3-1 (13-25, 10-25, 26-24, and 19-25).

Mt. Pleasant and Fairfield will be gearing up for the first round of the Southeast Conference tournament at Keokuk on Tuesday at 5 pm. 

WACO will face off against Lone Tree on Tuesday at 7:30 pm on the road. 

Columbus will take on Highland on Thursday at 7:30 pm at home.

High School Volleyball Rankings

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released their updated rankings yesterday and two local squads find themselves ranked within the top 15 for their respective classes.

In Class 2A, West Burlington fell two spots to #12 in the rankings after a loss to Holy Trinity Catholic in the SEISC championship game. The Falcons have now won 30 games for the fourth consecutive season after their win last night. Taryn Snodgrass is nearing 800 assists for the season, while the Falcons tout three hitters (Brenna Beggs, Jayonna Hiley, and Madelyn Hamelton) who have tabbed over 200 kills for the season.

In Class 1A, Holy Trinity Catholic climbed up one spot to be ranked #3 in the state. The Crusaders have caught fire since the Lisbon Tournament, having won 11 straight games and dropping only one set in that span. Last year’s runner-up touts the 6th best serve efficiency in Class 1A, while Adalyn Kruse and Presley Myers combine for 353 kills and 72 blocks for the season.

High School Cross Country

Winfield-Mt. Union held their invitational yesterday and the Mediapolis boy’s team grabbed the gold with a 50 point advantage, while the Louisa-Muscatine girls’ team snuck past the Bulldogs to take 1st place. 

Looking at the boys’ race, Mediapolis’ Will Schmidgall led the field with a time of 16 minutes and 38 seconds. Simon Wendel, Mason Lindeen, and Logan Frank helped the team as they each finished within the top 10. 

Jude Dykstra’s second place time of 17 minutes and 29 seconds led to WACO finishing in 3rd place as a team. The hosts took 6th place as a team with 119 points as they were anchored by Kohlby Newsom’s third place finish. 

Central Lee grabbed 4th place followed by West Burlington/Notre Dame in 5th place. Leo Thomas was the top finisher for the Hawks in 11th place, while the Falcons were led by Liam Haeger’s 12th place time of 19 minutes and 52 seconds. 

Holy Trinity Catholic and Wapello finished in 7th and 8th place, respectively. The Crusaders were led by Tanner Williams’ 21st place finish and Wapello’s Will Parsons took 28th.

In the girls’ race, Kaitlyn Kipp finished with the silver for West Burlington/Notre Dame, tabbing a time of 20 minutes and 49 seconds. Hannah Fruehling crossed the finish line in 4th place.

Mediapolis was paced by Amelia Grier, Lily Nalley, and Mia Steiner taking 12th through 14th place, respectively, to claim the tiebreaker over Lone Tree for 2nd place with 63 points. 

WACO’s Josie Dykstra grabbed the bronze as the Warriors took home 5th place. Central Lee finished 4th as a team with Macy Anderson’s seventh place time of 23 minutes and 4 seconds highlighting the team’s performance. Kenna Small led Wapello with a 9th place finish. 

Mediapolis and Columbus will be co-hosting the Mike Jay Invitational with Danville, Van Buren County, WACO, Central Lee, Winfield-Mt. Union, New London, Holy Trinity Catholic, West Burlington/Notre Dame, and Wapello all competing on Thursday, October 10th.

Mt. Pleasant, WACO, Wapello, and Fairfield will travel to Hillcrest Academy on Monday, October 7th. 

Southeastern Community College

The volleyball team will compete in the Rock Valley Tournament today with game one at 1 pm against Highland Community College.

College Football

#16 Iowa State is back at home tomorrow, October 5th, at 6:30 pm, taking on Baylor. KILJ 98.5 FM and AM 1130 will have the broadcast. 

Iowa will square off against #3 Ohio State on the road at 2:30 pm tomorrow. KILJ 105.5 FM will have the call.

On Overlay Energy Ordinance

87 Year Old Killed in Collision with Garbage Truck

According to the Iowa State Patrol, an 87-year old woman from Mediapolis was killed in a vehicle collision in Des Moines County on Tuesday afternoon.

The deceased, identified as Marilyn Drebenstedt was driving an SUV westbound on US34. She began backing up on the travel portion of the roadway. According to eye witness accounts, the SUV continued backing up until reaching a crossover marked with a “no U-turn” sign near mile marker 255. A garbage truck, operated by 55 year old Richard Hoops, was traveling westbound at the same location and struck the driver’s door directly when the SUV took a left turn.
