Glorine Emma Hellweg was born on October 7, 1930, in Lee County, Iowa, to Conrad and Elizabeth Rutter Kruse.  Her early years were spent in the simplicity of the rural country school before graduating from St. Mary High School in West Point, IA.   Glorine began working at the Sheaffer Pen company in Ft. Madison.  While attending her sister’s wedding she met a groomsman by the name of Arthur Hellweg.  The two were united in marriage on April 19, 1952, at St. Mary in West Point, the couple laid down roots in Ft. Madison and shortly after took the bold step of embracing farm life together in Fairfield in 1954.

Embodying the spirit of a true farmwife and mother, Glorine cherished her role in nurturing her growing family. Her passion for caregiving extended into her later years when she enriched the lives of many at the Jefferson County Health Center’s cafeteria, where she worked until retirement.

Glorine loved crocheting, and her creations are a warm reminder of her skilled hands. Her love for playing cards made her a joyful competitor amongst friends and family. Glorine was also celebrated for her exceptional baking, with her pies and angel food cake becoming the highlights of many gatherings.  Faith was a cornerstone of Glorine’s life; she was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Fairfield, Iowa for many years.

While she is now reunited with her beloved husband, Arthur Hellweg, her dear son Terrance, and her cherished siblings Marie, Kathryn, Richard, Ernest, Cletus, Bertha, Adrian, and Darlene, her spirit lives on in those she leaves behind.

Oversized Load Coming Through Fort Madison Today

The Fort Madison Police Department wants to let drivers know that at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 18th, an oversized load will be moving through the city on Business Route 61 from 20th Street, east to 330th Avenue. This will cause segments of the roadway to be blocked as the tow unit makes a slow progression along the route. The enormous load size necessitates the use of the entire road width, and all traffic will be diverted by officers ahead of it.

In anticipation of the move, the street department will be clearing obstacles and installing temporary 4-way stop signs at the affected traffic signals.

Should you normally travel this route, it is suggested to use Avenue E around the area until it has been cleared. The hauling contractor is attempting to minimize the disruption and expects to pass through in about an hour.

Crucial EMS Vote to Determine the Future of the Service Coming in September for Henry County Residents

On Thursday, June 6, the Henry County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a resolution declaring Henry County Emergency Medical Services (HCEMS) as an essential county service. The next step is for county residents to vote at a special election on September 10 to approve a tax levy for EMS programming.

HCEMS is currently owned and operated by Henry County Soldiers’ & Sailors’ Memorial Hospital. Due to the current property tax cap for HCEMS under hospital ownership, the hospital cannot continue to offer HCEMS and cover the revenue shortfalls.

The state trend shows that the former model of EMS is no longer viable. As of November 2023, 12 Iowa counties have received voter approval to levy for EMS programming. Nearly a dozen additional counties in Iowa are seeking public support in upcoming elections and/or are working on proposals to do so.

“In addition to Henry County Emergency Medical Services providing an invaluable service to our county residents, there is also an economic factor to consider. A significant consideration for newcomers moving into Henry County is knowing that we have high quality, accessible healthcare services. EMS is at the heart of this. EMS provides an essential service that also positively impacts our economy and assists in Henry County’s growth for years to come,” explained Marc Lindeen, Henry County Board of Supervisor.

HCEMS provides vital emergency medical services for Henry County residents 24 hours a day, seven days a week. These services include: emergency medical care, critical care transfers, medical transports, education and support to county first responders, public health education, and special event coverage.
