High School Baseball

New London will face off against Central Lee tomorrow, June 4th, at 5:30 pm at home. 

West Burlington will take on Van Buren County tomorrow at 5:30 pm on the road. 

Van Buren County will square off against Louisa-Muscatine tonight at 5:30 pm at home. 

Winfield-Mt. Union will face off against Central Lee tonight at 5:30 pm on the road. 

Burlington Notre Dame traveled north to Waterloo to compete in an invitational over the weekend and the Nikes finished 2-0. Their first win came against Easton Valley 4-1. Spencer Brent and Caden Schwenker combined to throw 17 strikeouts in the win as Lucas Johnson tallied two RBIs. 

The offense generated five extra base hits as the Nikes took down Wapsie Valley 12-5 in game two. Dylan Kipp slapped two doubles and Eli Oleson added his own double as they each tabbed two RBIs. Burlington Notre Dame will host Lone Tree tonight at 5:30 pm. 

Mediapolis will take on Wapello tonight at 5:30 pm at home. 

Fairfield will host Burlington tonight at 5:30 pm in a doubleheader. 

Mt. Pleasant will travel to Keokuk for a doubleheader tonight with first pitch scheduled for 5:30 pm. 

High School Softball

West Burlington competed in an invitational over the weekend in Oskaloosa and kept their win streak alive despite some dramatics. Game one was an extra innings thriller that saw the Falcons score the winning run in the 9th inning to defeat Newton 4-3. Orayana Gonzalez pitched the complete game, striking out three along with adding an RBI on offense. 

Game two saw the Falcons soar to a 10-0 shellacking of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont. Anna Engberg, Lyndsey Kelley, and Logan Kelley each collected two RBIs in the win as Madelyn Thomas pitched the complete game shutout, allowing only three hits. The Falcons will host Columbus tonight at 7 pm. 

Mt. Pleasant will take on Keokuk tonight in a road doubleheader at 5:30 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 5:15 pm.

High School Soccer

The 2024 boys’ and girls’ state championships took place over the weekend and here’s who walked away with the titles. 

Starting with the boys’ in Class 1A, #8 Van Meter’s Cinderella run was foiled by #3 North Fayette Valley 2-0. Trey Frieden saved all five shots for the TigerHawks.

Class 2A saw the unlikely matchup of #5 Bishop Heelan going against #7 Assumption and it was the Crusaders who scored in overtime that won the contest 3-2.

Class 3A featured another overtime thriller between #1 Des Moines Hoover and #2 Dallas Center-Grimes. Ben Jackson’s two goals helped propel the Mustangs to the title with a 3-2 final. 

Lastly, #1 Johnston cruised to the Class 4A title with a 3-0 win over #2 Dowling Catholic.

Moving over to the girls’ side, Nevada’s Joslynn Farmer kept Denver off the board with six saves as the Cubs claimed the Class 1A title. Isabelle Nelson tallied a goal and an assist in the win. 

In Class 2A, #1 North Polk scored first but #3 Dallas Center-Grimes saw Landry Glasgow score twice on their way to a 6-1 final and their third consecutive title.

Finally, in the biggest surprise of the tournament, #7 Bettendorf grabbed the Class 3A title with a 3-1 over Valley. Carson Bohanek nabbed a hat-trick for the Bulldogs. 

Prospect League

The Burlington Bees split their weekend schedule. The Bees fell to the O’Fallon Hoots 4-2 on Saturday as Jackson Rooker and Cooper Donlin tabbed RBIs in the contest. 

Yesterday, the Bees won an extra innings thriller that saw Merrick Mathews hit a two-run walk off home run in the 10th inning to give Burlington the win over the Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp 11-9. The Bees will host the Springfield Lucky Horseshoes tonight at 6:30 pm. 

The Clinton LumberKings beat the Pistol Shrimp on Saturday 5-2 as Chase Womack and Brayden Buchanan each grabbed two RBIs in the win. 

Last night, the LumberKings fell to the Alton River Dragons 4-3. Womack added another RBI to his season total. Clinton will host the Bees tomorrow, June 4th, at 6:30 pm.

Des Moines, IA- The 2024 boys’ soccer state championships concluded over the weekend and Saturday had fans on the edge of their seat with two of the contests needing overtime to decide the winner.

Class 1A

#8 Van Meter looked to cap off the Cinderella run with a win over the #3-seed North Fayette Valley. The TigerHawks crushed that hope with a 2-0 victory. Micah Zubriggen and Decklyn Heins each scored in the win.

Class 2A

In an unlikely matchup, #5 Bishop Heelan and #7 Assumption competed for the Class 2A championship and after 80 minutes the game was locked at 2. The Crusaders, who had already taken down #1 Gilbert, scored the goal in extra time to win 3-2.

Class 3A

The 2024 Class 3A championship will go down as an all-time classic as #1 Des Moines Hoover and #2 Dallas Center-Grimes faced off against one another for the crown. The two teams traded goals in the first and second half to force overtime.

The Mustangs broke the tie in extra time with a 3-2 win over the Huskies. Ben Jackson scored twice for the Mustangs and Brogan Fuller added another goal for the winning team. Sadi Elitie and Javier Flores each scored for the Huskies.

Class 4A

#1 Johnston extinguished any hope for a dramatic game by putting two goals on the board in the first half against #2 Dowling Catholic. The Dragons eventually won 3-0 to claim the crown.

Des Moines, IA- The 2024 girls’ soccer state championships concluded over the weekend and Saturday entertained the crowd with upsets galore.

Class 1A

The Class 1A championship saw Isabelle Nelson tally a goal and an assist for #4 Nevada as the Cubs blanked #3 Denver 2-0. Avery Anderson scored the first goal of the game in the 12^th minute.

It’s not often that the defending champion is considered the underdog, but #3 Dallas Center-Grimes had that distinction against #1 North Polk. After Abby Bell scored for the Comets first in the 14^th minute, North Polk seemed poised to be the new champion.

Nevertheless, the Mustangs kept finding the net in the second half as Landry Glasgow scored two goals in the 6-1 win. Kylie Knief scored twice, as Ella Forsyth and Kenna Knief each netted a goal.

Class 3A

The biggest surprise of the tournament had #7 Bettendorf compete against #5 Valley for the Class 3A championship and after a half the game was tied at 1. Carson Bohanek put the Bulldogs on her back and scored two goal of her three goals in the second half to give Bettendorf the 3-1 win.

Payton Markham assisted on all three goals for Bettendorf and Ella Anliker had the lone goal for Valley.

New London has scored at least 10 runs in their past three contests as the Tigers defeated West Burlington 10-6 last night. Brock Thuleen and Conner Bush each notched two RBIs for the Falcons. 

New London will face off against Central Lee on Tuesday, June 4th, at 5:30 pm at home. 

West Burlington will take on Van Buren County on Tuesday at 5:30 pm on the road.

Fairfield fell to Prairie yesterday 12-0 in the Iowa City West Softball Classic. The Trojans will compete in a doubleheader at home on Monday, June 3rd, against Burlington with game one at 5:30 pm. 

West Burlington handled New London last night 13-2. Shona Anderson crushed a home run and finished with four RBIs in the winning effort. The Falcons will travel to Oskaloosa today to compete in a tournament.

Winfield-Mt. Union fell to #11 Louisa-Muscatine last night 13-0. Quin Smith, Kellee Milks, Katie Miller, and Jessi Renken each tallied a single for the Wolves. Winfield-Mt. Union will face off against Central Lee on Monday, June 3rd, at 5:30 pm. 

WACO scored the first run of the game against Hillcrest Academy last night, but the Warriors could not keep up with the Ravens and lost 13-1. WACO will host Lone Tree on Tuesday, June 4th, at 5:30 pm.

High School Tennis

The boys’ state team tournament concluded yesterday and here’s the state champions. 

The Class 1A championship belongs to Wahlert Catholic after they defeated Xavier 5-3. Pella took 3rd place handily, taking down Waverly-Shell Rock 5-1. 

The Class 2A championship match was a shutout as Waukee Northwest took the crown over Pleasant Valley. Iowa City West narrowly defeated Linn-Mar 5-4 to claim 3rd place. 

High School Soccer

The boys’ state tournament held their semifinal matchups yesterday and here’s who will be playing for the championships today. 

Class 3A got the day rolling and Javier Flores scored both goals for Des Moines Hoover to push the Huskies past Norwalk 2-1. Dallas Center-Grimes cruised past Cedar Rapids Washington 4-0 as Zach Bruck scored two goals. The Class 3A championship will take place at 10 am. 

In a matchup few predicted, #5 Bishop Heelan will be taking on #7 Assumption for the Class 2A championship as the Crusaders defeated #1 Gilbert 3-1 and the Knights bested Perry 1-0. The game is scheduled for 1 pm. 

In Class 1A, #8 Van Meter continued their Cinderella run with a 2-0 victory over West Liberty. In the bottom half of the bracket, North Fayette Valley finally buried the ball into the back of the net in double overtime to beat Regina Catholic 1-0. The Class 1A championship game will take place at 4 pm. 

Lastly, #1 Johnston fended off Iowa City West 2-1 after winning in penalty kicks 4-3. Dowling Catholic also took down Pleasant Valley 2-1. The Class 4A championship is scheduled for 7 pm. 

On the girls’ side, Nevada will square off against Denver at 11:30 am for the Class 1A championship. 

North Polk will face off against Dallas Center-Grimes for the Class 2A championship at 5:30 pm. 

The Class 3A championship game is set for 2:30 pm against #5 Valley and #7 Bettendorf. 

Prospect League

The Burlington Bees lost to the O’Fallon Hoots 15-2 after seven innings last night. Cooper Donlin was the only source of offense for the Bees with a double and a two-run homer. The series will conclude tonight at 6:35 pm on the road. 

In a high scoring game, the Clinton LumberKings exited with the road victory over the Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp last night 12-10. Brayden Buchanan led the charge with three RBIs in the winning effort. The LumberKings will host the Pistol Shrimp tonight at 6:30 pm.
