High School Baseball
Burlington Notre Dame traveled to North Scott for the Lancer Baseball Invitational over the weekend and split their games. The Nikes took down the Lancers 6-1 as Landry Haberichter and Spencer Brent each tabbed two RBIs in the win.
Game two saw Notre Dame lose their first game of the season against Cedar Falls 9-6. Eli Oleson slugged a home run and collected two RBIs in the losing effort. The Nikes will face off against Louisa-Muscatine tonight on the road at 5:30 pm.
Fairfield will compete against Washington tonight at 5:30 pm in a road doubleheader.
Mt. Pleasant will host Burlington tonight in a doubleheader with game one at 5:30 pm.
Danville will travel to Highland tonight at 5:30 pm.
Mediapolis will take on Hillcrest Academy tonight at 5:30 pm at home.
Winfield-Mt. Union will face off against Van Buren County tonight at 5:30 pm on the road.
Central Lee will take on Mediapolis tomorrow, June 11th, at 5:30 pm on the road.
New London will square off against Burlington Notre Dame tomorrow at 5:30 pm on the road.
West Burlington will play Louisa-Muscatine on Wednesday, June 12th, on the road at 5:30 pm.
High School Softball
Fairfield hosted a tournament over the weekend and here’s how Saturday’s slate of games played out.
Mt. Pleasant dropped their game to Fairfield 10-0. Chaley Cook and Lila Cook each picked up the hit in the loss. In the Panthers’ second game of the day, Mt. Pleasant jumped out to a 4 to 0 lead over Van Buren County but was unable to hold off the Warriors, losing 5-4. Ashlynn Huff led the Warriors with two RBIs, while Emma Starr cracked a three-RBI triple for the Panthers.
Fairfield’s second game was a 3-0 loss to Cardinal, while the Comets defeated Van Buren County 4-0 in game one.
Shockingly, West Burlington dropped both of their contests on Saturday: 10-8 against Grinnell and 7-6 to Central Lee. Shona Anderson cracked a home run and collected six RBIs between the two contests.
Central Lee’s first game of the day did not go as planned as the Hawks fell to Chariton 8-0.
Mt. Pleasant will host Burlington tonight in a doubleheader with game one at 5:30 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 5:15 pm.
West Burlington will take on Holy Trinity Catholic tomorrow, June 11th, at 5:30 pm on the road.
Central Lee will square off against Mediapolis tomorrow at 7 pm on the road.

Winfield-Mt. Union competed at the BGM Triangular over the weekend and lost both opponents: 12-0 to East Marshall and 15-1 to BGM.
Holy Trinity Catholic will host Lone Tree tonight at 5:30 pm.
Danville will travel to Highland tonight at 7 pm.
WACO will take on Louisa-Muscatine tomorrow at 5:30 pm at home.
Mt. Pleasant Track and Field
The high school track and field season ended back on May 18th, but Mt. Pleasant celebrated their seasons with an award ceremony and here’s the honorees.
For the girls’ team, Alex Scott earned “Leading Scorer” as she was one of the individual qualifiers for the state meet where she finished in 8th place for the 100-meter dash and ran in the three relays. She also broke a school record.
Kya Goodrich was named “Most Improved” as she took 7th place at the state meet in the discus with a throw of 119 feet and 6 inches. Bailey Jalas also grabbed “Most Improved” as she finished with a school record and 15th in state at the long jump.
Rookie of the Year went to Kiyah Sanders. The freshman was a part of the 4×200 meter relay team that finished in 9th place at the state meet. Andi Scott and Kynlee White also broke school records.
Lastly, Courtney Raub was honored with the “Panther Award.” The senior leader participated in the 800-sprint medley team that competed at state. The girls’ team finished in first place at five meets and took second at the SEC conference meet.
On the boys’ side, Payson Coleman and Harmon Ensminger were both awarded with the “Panther Award.” Gavin Slagel was given “Most Improved.” Jude Dykstra earned the “Hammer Award.” Hoang Quang took home “Rookie of the Year” for his performance in the long jump.
Lastly, Avin Truong was named team “MVP.” Truong earned a trip to the state meet where he finished in 14th place with a leap of 20 feet and 4.5 inches. His best jump of the year was 21 feet and 11 inches. Truong also had the fastest times in the 100 and 200-meter dashes.
The Mt. Pleasant boys’ team claimed four second-place finishes this season.
Prospect League
The Burlington Bees defeated the Jackson Rockabillys on Saturday with a final score that resembled closer to a football game, 15-14 after 10 innings. Reese Moore clocked two doubles and collected four RBIs in the winning effort as Jace Figueroa scored the winning run on a wild pitch.
The Clinton LumberKings demolished the Springfield Lucky Horseshoes early in the weekend 10-0. Jalen Martinez led the charge with three RBIs.
The LumberKings and Bees took on one another last night with Clinton winning in considerable fashion 16-3. Landon Akers had a triple and two RBIs for the Bees.
Burlington will play tomorrow, June 11th, on the road against the Illinois Valley Pistol Shrimp at 7:05 pm.
Clinton will take on the Lucky Horseshoes tomorrow at home at 6:30 pm.

1944 – Relief pitcher Joe Nuxhall at 15 years, 316 days, debuts for the Cincinnati Reds; becoming the youngest player in MLB history. He later becomes an All-Star and a broadcaster.
1974 – Philadelphia Phillies slugger Mike Schmidt hits a ball off the public address speaker hanging from the Houston Astrodome roof. The first time the feat was accomplished since the Astrodome opened in 1965.
