Afternoon Update from the National Weather Service

The National Weather Service is reporting several rounds of showers and thunderstorms are expected today through Tuesday night. The greatest risk of severe weather will be Tuesday and Tuesday night, with a moderate risk (level 4 of 5) of severe weather forecast for Tuesday. All modes of severe weather are possible, which includes damaging winds, large hail, and tornadoes.

The strongest storms are expected Tuesday evening with some supercell storms possible. We may see damaging winds up to 80mph, large hail, and possible tornadoes.

Lori Steffensmeier

Lori Mae Ruby Steffensmeier, 37, of rural Fort Madison, Iowa, passed away at 8:33 a.m. Saturday, May 18, 2024. 

She was born on September 18, 1986, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the daughter of Randy and Merilee (Peterson) Ruby. On June 13, 2009, she married Dan Steffensmeier at the First Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa, Iowa.

She is survived by her husband: Dan; three daughters: Ruby, Kathleen and Carlee Steffensmeier; parents: Randy and Merilee; brother: John Ruby and sister: Lacey Ruby; father and mother-in-law: Tom and Carla Steffensmeier; grandmother: Sandra Petersen. Also surviving are several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents and maternal grandfather.

Lori graduated from Central College with a Bachelors Degree in Biology and Secondary Education. She worked as a quality systems manager at Roquette. She was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church in West Point. She served on St. Mary’s Parish Council and the Altar and Rosary Committee. Lori enjoyed gardening, golfing, reading, spending time with family and friends and most of all, she loved her children.

A visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m. Thursday, May 23, 2024, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point, where the family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. A Christian wake service will be held at 6:00 p.m. at the church.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 24, 2024, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in West Point, with Father Dan Dorau as celebrant.

Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in West Point.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to her daughters’ education.

Car vs. Motorcycle Accident on Sunday Afternoon in Mount Pleasant

The Mount Pleasant Police Department reports of a motor vehicle accident on Sunday afternoon. At 3:54pm on Sunday, May 19th, the MPPD responded to the 2100 Block of East Washington Street for a report of a car vs motorcycle accident. Upon investigation, it was determined that Hunter Williams of Mount Pleasant had attempted to turn north into Casey’s gas station when he was struck by Michal Bagwell, who was operating a motorcycle and traveling westbound on Washington Street.

One subject was transported to the hospital. The Mount Pleasant Police Department was assisted by the Henry County Sheriff’s Office, Mount Pleasant Fire, and Henry County Ambulance services.

Debra Garmoe

Debra Susan Garmoe, 67, of Fort Madison, Iowa, passed away at 12:03 p.m. Friday, May 17, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa.

She was born on March 1, 1957, in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, the daughter of Willard P. and Lucille (Thompson) Garmoe, Jr.

She is survived by her daughter: Carrie (Nick Derby) Stice of Argyle, Iowa; two sons: Paul (Dwan) Starks and Nathan (Sara) Starks, both of Fort Madison, Iowa; grandchildren: Patrick, Cheyenne, Bayley, Anthony, Sylvester, Paige, and Bryan Starks, Emma Rhodes, Ruth Stice, and one on the way; one brother: Russell (Sabine) Garmoe of Temple, Texas; her sister: Cheryl Baumgart of Hockley, Texas. Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son: Patrick; her brother: Willard Jr.; and her sister: Evelyn Calvert.

Debra worked at Conagra Foods for thirty-three years. She was a member of UFCW Local 617. She enjoyed quilt shows, spending time with her family, being outdoors, reading, bowling, and traveling with her family.

Her body has been entrusted to the crematory of Schmitz Funeral Home for cremation.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, June 1, 2024, at the Church of New Beginnings in Keokuk, Iowa, with Pastor Don Skinner officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.

Burial will be at a later date in the Montrose Cemetery.

A memorial has been established in her memory.

Chamber Alliance to Host Henry County Supervisor Candidates During Tuesday’s Forum

The Mount Pleasant Chamber Alliance’s Government Affairs Committee is pleased to host a forum for the upcoming primary election of Henry County Supervisor.   All Mount Pleasant Area Chamber of Commerce members are invited to attend the forum on Tuesday, May 21st, beginning at 6 PM at Masonic Lodge.  The forum will be a series of prepared questions for contested candidates regarding key issues for the community and businesses.  Candidates include:  Dan Cook, Steve Detrick, David Muhs and Chad White.

The Mount Pleasant Area Chamber Alliance exists to improve the quality of life for Henry County residents through economic growth. The Chamber consists of 360 businesses, organizations, and individual members. The Mount Pleasant Area Chamber Alliance encompasses the Mount Pleasant Area Chamber of Commerce, Mount Pleasant Area Development Commission, and Henry County Tourism.

Stride Into Summer the Right Way: Family Walk on June 2nd

Healthy Henry County Communities is hosting the 3rd annual Stride Into Summer Family Walk on Sunday June 2nd 1-4pm. This fun, free, family-friendly event will feature a number of activity stations along a loop walk at East Lake Park. Sign in and pick up your goodie bag at the tent by the tennis courts. A wagon or stroller is recommended. Organizations having activity stations include Henry County Public Health, ADDS, I-Smile, 1st Five, The Family Connection, CPPC, DVIP, ISU Extension and Outreach, Henry County Disability Services, Elevate, Mt. Pleasant Community School District, and the Mt. Pleasant, New London, and Winfield libraries.

In addition, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office will be there to fingerprint kids and provide parents with an ID kit. They will also be giving away some bike helmets for kids and have a few bikes to raffle off. The Mt. Pleasant Police Department, Mt. Pleasant Fire Department, Iowa DNR, Iowa State Patrol, and Henry County EMS will also have activities promoting summer safety topics.
