Single Vehicle Crash

On September 30, at approximately 4:07 p.m., the Henry County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a vehicle accident near the intersection of 250th Street and New London Road.  After an investigation, it was found that Corbin Jacobs of Mount Union, lost control of his vehicle while turning south on New London Road from 250th Street. The vehicle entered the east side ditch striking a fence.  Total damage to the vehicle and property is estimated to $3,500.  No injuries were reported.  Corbin was cited for failure to maintain control of a motor vehicle.

Busload of Books Tour Coming to WMU

Winfield-Mt. Union Community School is one of just 52 schools nationwide selected for the Busload of Books Tour, a major literacy project by author/illustrator duo Matthew Swanson and Robbi Behr. Robbi and Matthew and their four kids are spending the 2022-2023 school year living in a school bus/tiny home, visiting select schools in all 50 states (plus DC), doing presentations on creativity and collaboration, and giving away 25,000 free hardcover books to students and educators. Robbi and Matthew will be visiting Winfield-Mt. Union Community School on Friday, October 28th, 2022. Check out this website for more information….

Sports, October 4th

High School Cross Country

The Mount Pleasant boy’s and girl’s cross-country teams competed at Hillcrest Academy yesterday. The boys team placed 5th out of 8 teams with a time of 1:34:50. Ben Carthey led the way for the Panthers finishing in 6th with a time of 17:21. Jude Dykstra was the next finisher for the Panthers with a time of 18:39 giving him 20th. Tyler Johnson and Jonathan Hough finished in 31st and 32nd, respectively. Coleman Mowery captured 35th, Gabe Feldmann finished in 38th, and Isaac Rynders finished in 40th. Chase Lauman helped Pella to a first-place finish by running the top time of 16:31.

The girls team captured 4th out of 6 teams with a total time of 1:56:35. Isabelle Meador was the top runner for the Panthers with a time of 21:54 that was good enough for 9th place. Alexis Wagner and Audrey Lord were the next finishers at 20th and 21st, respectively. Ella McNamee and Aliya Graber finished back-to-back in 29th and 30th. Jayden Housh rounded out the day for the Panthers finishing in 32nd.

Mt. Pleasant JV Football

The Panthers defense showed up last night at home against Columbus Junction posting a shutout led by Cooper Kleinkopf who had 4.5 tackles. The offense was no slouch either as the Panthers ran for 232 yards with Landon Seymour and Drake Biesler finding the endzone. Additionally, Cooper Coleman was terrific throwing the football as he tallied 154 yards and 3 touchdowns.  Payson Coleman, William Birdsell, and Phoenix Watson each had a touchdown. The JV Team is now 3-0 on their season and they travel to play the Burlington Greyhounds October 10th at 6 pm.

High School Football

The Mount Pleasant Panthers are celebrating Homecoming this Friday, October 7th, against the Burlington Greyhounds. The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 pm with pregame to start at 7:15, here on KILJ.

Winfield-Mt. Union is in a big matchup this Friday as the Wolves travel to play WACO. The Wolves come into the game with a 5-2 record, while the Warriors are still undefeated at 7-0. The game is scheduled to start at 7 pm.

The New London Tigers will be celebrating senior night this Friday against Lone Tree at 7 pm.

In Mount Pleasant’s district, North Scott is at home against Clinton, and Fort Madison will be traveling to play Iowa City Liberty, both games scheduled to start at 7:30 pm. In other area games, Fairfield hosts Solon and Washington travels to play Keokuk, both games scheduled to start at 7:30 pm.

High School Volleyball

Winfield-Mt. Union travels to WACO to face off against the Warriors tonight in a rematch from earlier in the season when the Wolves won in straight sets. The game is scheduled to start at 7:30 pm.

Holy Trinity Catholic’s next game will be senior night when they host Central Lee tonight, October 4th, at 7:30 pm.

The SEC Volleyball tournament hosted by Washington begins tonight. Mt. Pleasant, Fairfield, Keokuk, Fort Madison, and Burlington will all be competing as well.

The New London Tigers next game will be Thursday, October 6th, against Fort Madison.

Elementary Basketball Tournament

Mount Pleasant Christmas Holidays 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament for 3rd – 8th grade boys and girls will be held on Dec 17th, 2022. For more registration details contact Coach Ronnie Ashton at 319-931-2896.

Iowa Wesleyan Athletics

The Tiger volleyball team’s game tonight against Faith Baptist Bible College was cancelled and will not be rescheduled. They will be in action this Friday and Saturday when they travel to participate in CAC Classic where they will have 5 matches in 2 days.

The Men’s golf team will be competing in day 2 of the Central Invite today with Tee time scheduled for 9 am.

The women’s soccer team’s next game will be tonight as they travel to clash with the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy Eutectics at 4 pm, as they look to extend their win streak to three games.

The men’s soccer team looks to get back in the win column tomorrow, October 5th, when they travel to play Missouri Baptist University at 2 pm.

The Tiger football team will be at home Saturday, October 8th, to face off against Dickinson State University at 1 pm.

Shae Matthew McCabe (final arrangements)

Shae Matthew McCabe, 43, of Fairfield passed away on Wednesday, September 7, 2022 from injuries sustained in an accident.

A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, October 9, 2022, at 3:00 pm at the Cider House in Fairfield,  with a meal to follow.  A memorial fund for Shae’s children has been established at Community 1st Credit Union in Fairfield.  Checks may be taken directly to Community 1st Credit Union or mailed to 2216 256th Street, Fairfield, Iowa 52556. Feel free to honor Shae by wearing Iowa Hammers, Stars and Stripes, or any other wrestling apparel.

Peggy Jean Rice

Peggy Jean Rice, 69, of Mount Pleasant passed Sunday, October 2, 2022, at Arbor Court.

Peggy was born October 9, 1952, the daughter of Dennis and Martha Combs.  She graduated from Burlington High School.  On May 21, 1970, Peggy was united in marriage to Ronald Rice.  She managed the Homeless Shelter in Burlington for many years.

Peggy is survived by her daughter, Veronica (Charles) Gonzalez of Burlington; her son, Matthew (Melody) Rice of Antioch, California; six grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; a sister Julie Anderson of Mount Pleasant; and three brothers, Teddy Combs, Danny Combs, and Duffy Combs all of Burlington.

Single Vehicle Crash

October 2, at approximately 11:41PM, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office took a report of a single vehicle rollover near Mile Marker 45 on U.S. Highway 218 near to Mount Pleasant. After an investigation, it was found that the driver, Kathy Bridget Hensley-Birky of Cedar Rapids, was driving northbound on U.S. Highway 218.  She apparently fell asleep while driving.  The vehicle went off the roadway and drove off into the median striking a cable barrier. After striking the cable barrier, the vehicle rolled several times. The driver was transported to the Henry County Health Center for possible serious injuries. The vehicle was a total loss. The Mount Pleasant Police Department, Henry County Paramedics, and Mount Pleasant Fire all assisted with this accident. Hensley-Birky received a citation for failing to maintain control of a motor vehicle.
