CLCSD Board Meeting Rescheduled

Due to the anticipated forecast Monday evening into Tuesday, the Central Lee Community School District will be rescheduling the January board meeting from January 9, 2024 to January 16, 2024 at 7:00 a.m.

MPCSD Music Shows Off: Seven Students Selects to SEIBA

Seven Mount Pleasant Community School District music students have been selected to the Southeast Iowa Bandmasters Association Honor Bands based on auditions conducted Saturday in Fairfield.

From the Middle School are 7th grader Michael Gossen on alto saxophone and 8th graders Chris Carapia-Segundo on tenor saxophone, Swaylin Henderson on clarinet and Carly Mullin on bass clarinet. Mullin was also selected to perform with the All-Iowa 8th Grade Iowa Bandmasters Association Honor Band in May.

High School students who earned a spot in the SEIBA High School Honor Band are sophomore Eli Heaton on contra bass clarinet and senior Jolynn Keomanivong as first chair tenor saxophone for the second year. Senior Drake Landau on guitar was selected to the Honor Jazz Band.

These students will join other selectees in a concert on January 20 at the University of Iowa’s Voxman Music Building.

UTV Rollover in Wapello

At 3:12 P.M. on January 7, 2024, Wapello Fire and Rescue was called for a UTV rollover accident with injuries on I Avenue approximately 1/2 mile north of County Road G-62 in rural Wapello.

Upon arrival, emergency crews discovered a side-by-side UTV resting on it’s side leaking fuel with two occupants still inside and unable to get out. The occupants were assisted out of the vehicle and moved to a waiting Wapello ambulance for evaluation. Fire crews contained the fuel spill and assisted with removal of the vehicle. Per department policy, the identity of the occupants will not be disclosed.

Sports, January 8th

High School Basketball

The Mt. Pleasant boys’ team will host Wilton tonight. The junior varsity will play at 5 pm with the varsity to follow. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will have the call with the pregame show at 6 pm.

The Mt. Pleasant girls’ team will face off against Burlington at home on Friday, January 12th, at 6 pm. 

The WACO versus New London basketball games have been postponed for tonight. The games will be made up on Monday, January 22nd. 

Winfield-Mt. Union versus Mediapolis has been canceled for tonight. 

Van Buren County will face off against New London tomorrow, January 9th, at 6 pm. 

The Central Lee boys’ team fell to Fort Madison over the weekend 63-55. Dayton Lamar led the way for the Bloodhounds with 17 points. The Central Lee girls’ team could not keep up with Fort Madison either as the Bloodhounds dominated their way to a 61-31 final. Dayonna Davis led Fort Madison with 15 points as Kenna Sandoval scored 13 for the Hawks. Central Lee will take on Mediapolis tomorrow with the girls leading off the night at 6 pm at home. 

The Danville versus Holy Trinity Catholic girls’ game has been postponed for tonight. A make up date will be announced at a later time. The boys’ team will host the Crusaders tomorrow at 7:30 pm.

High School Wrestling

The boys’ teams of Mt. Pleasant, New London, Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union, and WACO all competed at the Gary Curtis Invitational over the weekend. The Panthers claimed 14th place as a team with 47.5 points. Landon Beckler took 5th place in the 106-pound weight class after taking down Cael Grove of English Valleys-Tri County by fall. Ramzy Davis grabbed 4th place after finishing with a 3-2 record in the 150-pound weight class. William Birdsell won two matches, while Jackson Newman, Keegan Birdsell, and Lane Beckler each won a match to earn points.

Columbus-Winfield-Mt. Union was the highest finisher of the four teams as the Wildcats claimed 4th place. Russel Coil nabbed the gold in the 285-pound weight class after winning all three of his matches by fall. Also finishing on the podium was Ty Scorpil in the 126-pound weight class as he took 2nd place after a narrow 6-4 decision loss in the championship match. Jacob Nelson and Cole Storm each grabbed 4th place, while Ian Estudillo and Trevor Phillips each finished in 5th place in their respective weight classes. 

New London finished in 11th place as a team with Michael Raines leading the way with a 2nd place finish in the 165-pound weight class as Cooper Gates of West Branch picked up the win by a 9-4 decision. Kane Forseen, 120-pound weight class, and Gage Burden, 126-pound weight class, each finished in 4th place after losing by major decision in the 3rd place match. 

Lastly, WACO had two podium finishers as the Warriors claimed 13th place with 48 points. Louden Huisenga took home the gold in the 190-pound weight class after defeating Isaac Thacher of Fort Madison by a 5-3 decision. Gage Samo finished in 2nd place as he fell to Mason Shirk of Wilton by an 8-4 decision in the 113-pound championship match. Alburnett won the invitational, while Washington and Fort Madison claimed 5th and 6th place, respectively. 

The Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union boys’ team will be hosting WACO and New London in a triangular on Thursday, January 11th. 

The Mt. Pleasant girls’ and boys’ teams will travel to Washington to compete in a dual on Thursday. 

The girls’ wrestling scramble hosted by Burlington Notre Dame has been canceled for tonight.

The Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ team will participate in a tournament hosted by Louisa-Muscatine on January 20th.

The WACO girls’ team will compete in an invitational on Saturday, January 13th.

High School Bowling

Mt. Pleasant competed at a tournament hosted by Louisa-Muscatine over the weekend and the boys’ team finished with 2,877 pins as they were led by Joseph Rheinschmidt with 415 total pins with Alec Payne right behind with 413 pins. 

The Panthers girls’ team took 8th place with 2,367 total pins. Bethany Drury finished with the seventh highest individual score with 395 total pins. The Panthers will host Fairfield on January 18th. 

College Basketball

The #4 Iowa women’s team will travel to take on Purdue on Wednesday, January 10th, at 7 pm. 

The Iowa State women’s team defeated BYU 80-75 over the weekend; the victory gave head coach Bill Fennelly his 600th career victory at Iowa State. Addy Brown drilled four three-pointers on her way to a game-high 24 points. The Cyclones will host West Virginia on Wednesday at 6:30 pm. 

The Iowa State men’s team attempted to pull off the upset against #11 Oklahoma over the weekend, but came up short against the Sooners 71-63. Robert Jones, Milan Momcilovic, and Hanson Ward each put up 12 points for the Cyclones in the losing effort. Houston will travel to Ames tomorrow, January 9th, to play at 6 pm. 

The Iowa men’s team picked up their first Big 10 win of the year in a 86-77 victory over Rutgers last weekend. Four Hawkeyes finished in double figures as Payton Sandfort led the team with 24 points and Ben Krikke collected a double-double with 19 points and 10 boards. Tony Perkins and Owen Freeman each scored 15 points in the win. The Hawkeyes will play at home on Friday against Nebraska at 8:30 pm.

1955 – Georgia Tech ends Kentucky’s 129-game home basketball win streak. 

1984 – The Executive Committee of the NCAA votes to expand the championship basketball field to 64 teams starting in 1985.

Carol Yvonne King

Carol Yvonne King, 84, of Mt. Pleasant, died Thursday, January 3, 2024 at New London Specialty Care in New London.

Carol was born September 3, 1939 in Jefferson, Iowa. She was the daughter of Arthur Reuben and Goldie Leona (Orion) Crouch. She grew up in the Squirrel Hollow area near Jefferson (now a state park). On August 4, 1956 in Churdan, IA, Carol married Hubert Lyle Blackburn. The couple later divorced. She then married William Eli King. The couple later divorced.

Carol was a longtime homemaker raising her 6 children. With Bill, they ran the Starlight Motel in Mt. Pleasant.

Carol was a faithful member of the Church of the Open Bible in Mt. Pleasant. She enjoyed watching Christian TV, gardening and hiking in the woods.

Those thankful for sharing in Carol’s life include her children: Kenneth (Faith) Blackburn and Neil Blackburn, both of Mt. Pleasant, Marsha (Vince) Himes and Tamara Blackburn, both of Cedar Rapids, IA, Linda (Bill Briscoe) Campbell of Dixie, Mississippi and Anite (Brian) Pesch of Rome, GA; 9 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren and a niece, Shirley Moran.

Her parents, brother John Benjamin Crouch and former husbands precede Carol in death.

A funeral service for Carol will be held 1:30 PM on Tuesday, January 9th at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant. The Reverend Michael Johnson, Pastor, Mt. Pleasant Church of the Open Bible, will officiate. Burial will be in the Oakland Mills Cemetery, rural Mt. Pleasant. The family will be present to greet friends 1 hour prior to her funeral on Tuesday. There will also be a time of open visitation from 3-8 PM on Monday at the funeral Home..

Wendell Whaley

Wendell Whaley, 66, of Mount Pleasant, died Thursday, January 4, 2024, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.

Wendell was born February 28, 1957, in Mount Pleasant, the son of Ernest and Alice M. (Edwards) Whaley. He graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1975, and continued his education at Southeastern Community College where he earned his Associate’s degree in business. On May 8, 1982, Wendell was united in marriage to Christine Snyder in Mount Pleasant. Wendell sold propane for 20 years, as well as operated a lawn care and dust control business. He was a man of many talents and extremely dedicated to his work. Wendell loved spending time with family.

Wendell is survived by his wife Chris; son Nick (Anne) Whaley of St. Paul, MN; daughter Kyla (Mark) Schafer of Ottumwa; 5 grandchildren Ember and Rupsha Whaley, Shaley, Bria and Avery Schafer; two sisters Wanda (Bill) Pate of Saucier, MS, and Marlene (Ron) Medin of Jefferson City, MO. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother Roger Whaley.

Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at Olson-Powell Chapel. Burial will follow in the Forest Home Cemetery. Visitation will be 2:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday, January 8, at Olson-Powell Chapel. The family will be present to greet friends beginning at 5:00 p.m. Memorial funds have been established for the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House and the American Cancer Society.
