Darrell “Goose” Blint
Darrell Douglas “Goose” Blint, 75, of West Point, died Thursday, January 11, 2024 at his home. He was born December 17, 1948 in Ft. Madison to Delbert and Hazel Madeline Pickle Blint. On December 1, 1973 he married Linda M. Gordy in New London.
He was a graduate of Ft. Madison High School, then served in the Army in Germany during the Vietnam war. He worked as a painter for J.I. Case Company until retiring in 1999. Darrell enjoyed gardening, fishing and hunting, junk-yarding, and in his retirement years worked for Rick’s Auto Sales. He was a board member of Burge Cemetery Association.
Survivors include his wife, Linda of West Point; daughter Dellanna (Joel) Tiemeier of Germansville, Pensylvannia; sons Anthony (Angie) Blint of Mt. Pleasant and Nathan Blint of West Point; six grandchildren, Nick (Holly) Blint, Josh Tiemeier, Victoria (Jameson) Skalinski, Abby Blint, Aiden Blint and Lily Blint; one great-granddaughter; and one sister. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter Jennifer.

Flags at Half Staff for Perry High School Principal
Today, Governor Kim Reynolds issued the following statement on the death of Dan Marburger, principal of Perry High School:
“Our entire state is devastated by the news of Dan Marburger’s death. Kevin and I offer our deepest condolences to his wife and family as we pray for their comfort during this very difficult time. Dan courageously put himself in harm’s way to protect his students, and ultimately gave his own life to save them. He will forever be remembered for his selfless and heroic actions. May he rest in peace.”
Gov. Reynolds has ordered all flags in Iowa to be lowered to half-staff on Sunday, January 14, 2024, and remain at half-staff until sunset on the day of Mr. Marburger’s funeral and internment.
Flags will be flown at half-staff on the State Capitol Building and on flag displays in the Capitol Complex. Flags will also be at half-staff on all public buildings, grounds and facilities throughout the state.
Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.
Wanda Pogemiller
Wanda Pogemiller, 94, of Wapello passed away on Thursday, January 11, 2024 at Pleasantview Home in Kalona. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 26, 2024 at the Wapello First Presbyterian Church. Memorial Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 26, 2024 at the church. A time of food and fellowship will follow in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be in the Wapello Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the Wapello Ambulance and the Wapello Presbyterian Church. Wanda Jean Grim was born on May 19, 1929 in Morning Sun Township, Louisa County, Iowa, the daughter of James Russell and Dorothy (Thomas) Grim. Wanda was a 1947 graduate of Wapello High School. On January 17, 1948, Wanda was united in marriage to Robert “Bob” Pogemiller in Wapello. Wanda was a member of the Wapello First Presbyterian Church, Eastern Star, had served on the Wapello Cemetery board and also worked the polls for many elections. She was the classic Housewife/Mother of the 1950’s/60”s and legendary in her pursuit of her cleanliness in the home. She and Bob loved traveling to Arizona in the winter where they watched spring training and went antique shopping for pickle castors, biscuit jars and butter churns. Wanda liked to play cards frequently, playing several times a week with various card groups – both womens and mixed couples. She enjoyed golfing, attending Iowa football games and catching her children and grandchildren’s activities. To her family she was known as the “World Champion of Gift Wrapping”-as every gift large or small for every special occasion and Christmas was always wrapped very delicately and always topped with a bow.
Wanda will be deeply missed by her children, Rick (Kay) Pogemiller of Bellevue, Iowa and Jayne McCulley of Mediapolis; grandchildren, Clint (Katherine) Pogemiller, Matt (Deb) Pogemiller, Scott Pogemiller, Marc (Wendy) Whipple, Kimberley Rossiter (Joe), Allison (Joe) Malandra, Lindsey (Eric) Hausknecht, J.R. McCulley and Tanner (Ellen) McCulley and great-grandchildren, Ethan, Jack, Grace, Owen, Victoria, Diana, Kolt, Kash, Kwyn, Gianna, Tenley, Aslyn, Ronan, John, Jacob and Josephine.
Wanda was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bob Pogemiller on September 21, 2009; daughter, Denise Whipple and two brothers, Delbert and Neil Grim.

High School Basketball
The Mt. Pleasant girls team will travel to Danville on Monday, January 15th, to face off against the Bears at 6 pm.
The Mt. Pleasant boys’ team will hit the road to take on Oskaloosa on Tuesday, January 16th, with tip-off scheduled for 7:45 pm.
WACO will take on Wapello in a road matchup on Monday with the girls leading off the night at 6 pm.
Winfield-Mt. Union will tango with WACO on Tuesday with the girls’ game scheduled to start at 6 pm. The two split the matchup back in December with the WACO girls winning and the Winfield-Mt. Union boys taking their contest.
Van Buren County will host Cardinal on Monday with the girls playing at 6 pm followed by the boys’ game.
Central Lee will travel to compete against Burlington Notre Dame on Tuesday with the first game starting at 6 pm.
New London will face off against Danville in a road conference matchup on Tuesday with the girls scheduled to start at 6 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 5:45 pm.
Danville’s matchup against HLV scheduled for today has been postponed.
Mediapolis had their matchup against Burlington today canceled. The Bulldogs will face off against Holy Trinity Catholic on Tuesday at 6 pm.
Holy Trinity Catholic will take on Fort Madison today with the girls’ playing at 2:30 pm in a road non-conference game.
High School Wrestling
The WACO Warrior Invitational scheduled for today has been postponed and moved to Monday, January 15th.
The Centerville tournament that the Mt. Pleasant and Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union boys’ teams were scheduled to attend today has been canceled.
The Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union boys’ team will compete in a meet hosted by WACO on Thursday, January 18th.
The Mt. Pleasant boys’ and girls’ teams will compete in a dual against Fairfield on Thursday.
The Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ team will participate in a tournament hosted by Louisa-Muscatine on January 20th.
The WACO girls’ wrestling meet at Mid-Prairie scheduled for today has been postponed and moved to Monday.

Mt. Pleasant will host Fairfield on January 18th.
College Basketball
The #3 Iowa women’s team and #14 Indiana will face off in a top-25 matchup tonight at 7 pm in Iowa City.
The Iowa State women’s team will host #4 Baylor today at noon.
The Iowa State men’s team will host Oklahoma State tonight at 5 pm.
The Iowa men’s team shocked Nebraska last night, taking down the Cornhuskers handily 94-76. Six Hawkeyes finished in double figures as Owen Freeman and Payton Sandfort collected double-doubles. Freeman scored 22 points and gathered 10 rebounds, while Sandfort cashed in for 19 points and 10 boards. The Hawkeyes will travel to Minnesota on Monday, January 15th, at 5 pm.

“Joe”
Minooka, Illinois — Joseph J. Sitar, Sr. passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, January 10, 2024. Born in Riverside, New Jersey, February 11, 1939, to Joseph and Anne (Nee Bodine) Sitar. In 1949, his family moved to Joliet, Illinois. Joe proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps from March 30, 1956, to March 29, 1958. On October 24, 1959, he married his love, Sally (Nee Brennan). Their love story spanned 64 years. They made their home in Minooka, Illinois. Joe was employed by the EJ&E railroad as a switchman where he dedicated 44 years. Upon retiring, Joe found joy following his grandchildren, claiming to be “their greatest fan”, to all sporting events. He was a member of Midwest Old Threshers, volunteering countless hours to “the greatest steam show on earth.” He completed Steam School, worked on steam engines, and drove his John Deere tractor each day of the 5-day reunion. Joe shared his love for shark tooth hunting with his grandchildren taking them on “great shark hunts” and bragging on how many they would find. He especially enjoyed his time on Nokomis Beach with Sally.
Joe was preceded in death by one son in infancy, John E. Sitar (1971), his parents, two sisters Anne Carey and Veronica Chapla; and his brothers-in-law Edward (late JoAnne) Brennan, Jack Blatti and Lou Maffeo.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Sally, his four cherished children Michelle (Scott) Hunckler, Joe (Denise) Sitar Jr., Jeff (Missy) Sitar, and Jennifer (Patrick) O’Neil, eleven adoring grandchildren, Kristie (Rob) Anderson, Kelli Hunckler (Jerum Hubbert), Scott Hunckler Jr., Kevin Hunckler, Elizabeth, Matthew and Meaghan Sitar, Marie and J.C. Sitar, and Shae and Ryan O’Neil. Six great grandchildren, Rylee, Grace and Conner Anderson, Riley, Havana and Hailee Hubbert. One brother, James (Bonnie) Sitar, two brothers-in-law, Bob Carey and Lenny Chapla, three sisters-in-law, Judy Blatti, Janet (Jerry) Kiernan, and Terri Maffeo, numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
In lieu of flowers memorials to Midwest Old Threshers, or Lightways Hospice in Joe’s name would be greatly appreciated.
Chapel prayers will be held in the O’Neil Funeral Home Chapel 1105 E. 9th St. Lockport, IL, 60441 on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at 10:15am proceeding to St. Joseph Church, Lockport for Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00am. Interment following Mass at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, Romeoville with full Military Honors. Visitation Monday, January 15, 2024, in the Funeral Home Chapel from 4:00pm until 8:00pm.
