Rosalie Armstrong

Rosalie A. “Rose” Armstrong, 77, of Bonaparte, Iowa, passed away at 6:27 p.m. Monday, December 11, 2023 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

She was born on January 3, 1946 in Fort Madison, Iowa the daughter of William C. and Anna Mae (Suire) James. On June 21, 1967 she married Charles L. “Roy” Armstrong in Fort Madison, he preceded her in death on April 20, 2009.

Survivors include one daughter, Tina Marie Jenkins of Fort Madison; two sons: Roy Alan (Andrea) Armstrong of Keosauqua and Tony Dion Armstrong of Bonaparte; five grandchildren: Sasha (Byron) Rich, Elizabeth (Kevin) Thornburg, Dillon (Ayla) Armstrong, Blake Armstrong, and Lacey Jenkins; nine great grandchildren: Camden, Jolee, Jordan, Kaidan, Norah, Zander, Rayn, Weston, and Ashby; one great great grandson Tobi; two brothers: Carlin James of Kirksville, Missouri and Ronald James of Fort Madison. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Roy; son-in-law Tommy  Jenkins; two brothers: Kenneth and Jesse; two sisters: Carolyn and Anna Mae.

Rose worked as a CNA in Home Health Care. She attended Bonaparte Baptist Church. Rose loved her cats very much, riding her bike, and spending time with her family.

The family will receive friends at 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 16, 2023 at Schmitz Funeral Home in Farmington.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 16, 2023 at Schmitz Funeral Home in Farmington with Pastor Mark Caston officiating.

A memorial has been established in her memory for PAW Animal Shelter.

Shots Fired Incident Leads to Hospitalization

On December 12th at approximately 4:09am, the Des Moines County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to 11903 DMC Hwy 99 in reference to an unknown individual who was inside the residence.

While Deputies were enroute they were notified that a shot was fired, and someone had been struck by the bullet.

Upon arrival Deputies located a male with a gunshot wound. He was then transported to Southeast Iowa Regional Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries.

Multiple people were interviewed at the scene and the DMCSO has determined there is no ongoing threat to the community. The incident remains under investigation.

The Des Moines County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Burlington Police Department and the Burlington Fire Department and Paramedics.

Sports, December 13th

High School Basketball

Mt. Pleasant will travel to Washington for a conference matchup on Friday, December 15th, with the girls’ game scheduled to start at 6 pm. KILJ 105.5 FM, kilj.com, will be on the call with the pregame show at 5:45 pm. 

The Mediapolis girls’ team has now scored at least 80 points in five of their first seven games of the season as the Bulldogs defeated New London 87-19. Grace Holsteen led the team with 26 points. The boys team also picked up the win for Mediapolis with a 16-point win over New London, 58-42. The Bulldogs will face off against Burlington Notre Dame on Friday with the girls playing at 6 pm. 

New London will host West Burlington on Friday with the girls going at 6 pm followed by the boys game. 

WACO swept Highland last night with the girls winning 44-29 and the boys’ breezing past the Huskies 76-22. Emma Wagler led the Warriors in points with 13 on the night followed by Brenna Graber’s 10 points. For the boys’ team, four players finished in double figures with Hunter Hughes scoring 16 points and Isaac Rich, Clayton Miller, and Colton Liechty all cashing in for 10 points apiece. The Warriors will travel to take on Hillcrest Academy on Friday with the girls’ game scheduled for 6 pm. 

The Van Buren County boys’ team fell to Danville last night 68-13. The girls’ team suffered the same fate against the Bears, losing 61-22. The Warriors will compete against Holy Trinity Catholic in a road matchup on Friday with game one at 6 pm. 

The #15 Holy Trinity Catholic girls team picked up their first loss of the season after an overtime thriller went Burlington Notre Dame’s way 61-57. The boys’ team for the Crusaders was led by Luke Hellige’s 31 points in their 66-57 victory over the Nikes last night. 

The Central Lee boys’ team had their wings clipped by West Burlington last night 74-39. The girls’ team will take on Danville in a road matchup at 6 pm on Friday, while the boys’ team will play Danville tomorrow, December 14th, at 7:30 pm. 

Winfield-Mt. Union will take on Columbus on Friday with the girls playing at 6 pm. 

High School Wrestling

The Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ team will compete on Saturday, December 16th, at Cedar Rapids-Prairie. 

The WACO girls will compete on Saturday at Chariton. 

Mt. Pleasant will travel to Fort Madison tomorrow, December 14th, to compete in a dual. 

The New London boys’ team will compete at Pekin tomorrow in a dual. 

The Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union boys’ team will travel to Van Buren County tomorrow for a triangular. 

The WACO boys’ team will head to Mediapolis tomorrow to compete in a triangular. 

High School Bowling

Mt. Pleasant will take on Burlington on Friday, December 15th. 

College Signing

Nate Dismang will officially be a Blackhawk next year as he signed his letter of commitment to Southeastern Community College (SCC) to play golf yesterday. The Mt. Pleasant senior was the second-best golfer on the squad last year as he averaged a score of 88.33 per 18 holes.

Dismang contributed several factors into his decision to choose SCC, including distance and money saved by not paying for housing, but, namely, he believes Head Coach Mike Swink will help him improve,

“I’m believing that SCC is just a great place and I’m glad that I’m able to have a place to move on with my academics. I’m just glad that I got a hold of Coach Swink, and he helped me out.”

Dismang will be following in his mother and brother’s footsteps as he decided to major in business. 

The Panthers will start their season in the spring with a match at Fort Madison’s Sheaffer Memorial Golf Park on April 4th.

College Football

Iowa State University will take on Memphis in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl in Memphis on December 29th at 2:30 pm. The Cyclones defeated Memphis in the 2017 AutoZone Liberty Bowl 21-20. 

#20 Iowa will face off against #25 Tennessee in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl on January 1st at noon. 

College Basketball

The #4 Iowa women’s team will compete against Cleveland State on Saturday, December 16th, at 6 pm. 

The Iowa State women’s team will host Troy on Sunday, December 17th, at 12 pm. 

The Iowa State men’s team will take on Florida A&M on Sunday at 5 pm. 

The Iowa men’s team will look to get back in the win column on Saturday at 3:30 pm against Florida A&M.

Mini Grants Available for Teaching Agriculture – Apply Here!

The Iowa Agriculture Literacy Foundation (IALF) is making mini-grants available to support the integration of agriculture into classroom instruction or after school programs with an academic focus.

 

The Agriculture in the Classroom Teacher Supplement Grants, made possible through support from the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation (IFBF), are designed to help Iowa teachers initiate new projects or expand existing projects that promote agriculture literacy in students. Teachers can apply for $250 grants that can be used to fund innovative lessons, activities, classroom resources, guest speakers, outreach programs, field trips, and other projects.

 

Preschool through 12th grade teachers, librarians, afterschool program coordinators, and Homeschool Assistance Programs at Iowa schools are eligible to apply. Grants must relate to social studies, science, math, language arts, or 21st century skills and integrate agriculture into the learning.

 

“The IFBF is proud to provide financial assistance and support educators in their classrooms,” said Ronnette Vondrak, IFBF community resources manager. “Agricultural literacy is critical in further expanding knowledge and an understanding of the value and impact agriculture has across our state and world.”

Child Care Center Checks

Governor Reynolds announced the final round of Covid-era stipends for licensed and registered child care providers, including Child Care Centers and Child Development Homes. The application period runs through January 12, 2024.

“Childcare is the catalyst that drives economic growth,” said Governor Reynolds. “At a time when most parents work outside the home, access to reliable, safe, and affordable childcare allows parents to pursue their careers and contribute to the productivity and growth of our economy.”

Award amounts will range from $10,000 to $50,000 based on program size and number of applications received.  Funds can be used for one-time expenses related to employee recruitment and retention, minor renovations, or upgrading equipment. Stipend application and more information about the funding can be found on the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) website.

Iowa is committed to multi-faceted solutions to child care challenges to provide quality care for children, keep parents working, and drive economic development.  In addition to issuing more than $218 million in Stabilization Grants directly to child care providers during the pandemic, HHS has launched programs to fund recruitment and retention bonuses, allow child care workforce to qualify for Child Care Assistance, and to promote partnerships between child care centers and local businesses to support wage enhancements for child care providers.

HHS has also partnered with Iowa Workforce Development to improve access to quality child care options. More than $35 million in Child Care Challenge grants have been awarded to regional and community projects to create more than 4,880 new child care slots across the state. In addition, the Child Care Business Incentive grant program encourages employers to offer child care as part of their benefits package. Funds support infrastructure investments to build or expand child care capacity, or support arrangements between employers and child care providers to expand and reserve slots for their employees’ children. To date, the $27 million in grant awards has generated a $58 million total investment and more than 1,860 new child care slots.

Nate Dismang Signs on to Play Golf at SCC Next Fall

Mt. Pleasant, IA- Nate Dismang will officially be a Blackhawk come next year as he signed his letter of commitment to Southeastern Community College (SCC) to play golf today. The senior at Mt. Pleasant was the second-best golfer on the squad last year as he averaged a score of 88.33 per 18 holes.

Dismang contributed several factors into his decision to choose SCC, including distance and money saved by not paying for housing, but, namely, he believes Head Coach Mike Swink will help him improve,

“I’m believing that SCC is just a great place and I’m glad that I’m able to have a place to move on with my academics. I’m just glad that I got a hold of Coach Swink, and he helped me out.”

Originally looking at becoming a chiropractor, Dismang soon realized that it was not the path for him; so, he redirected his path towards the family trade of business,

“…My mom and my brother are just huge inspirations as they both majored in business, and I just like how they support others and themselves and that’s just what I want to do.”

With time to still make memories as a Panther, Dismang picked a moment from last year’s season,

“At The Preserve in Moravia, just shooting my all-time low was just the greatest feeling, knowing it’s a super hard course and [I] was able to accomplish it.”

Dismang will be looking to transfer after his two years at SCC to a four-year university where he hopes to continue his golf career. The Panthers will start their season in the spring with a match at Fort Madison’s Sheaffer Memorial Golf Park on April 4th.

Bobby Phillips

Bobby Wray Phillips, 88, of New London, died Monday, December 11, 2023 at New London Specialty Care.  He was born in Bellflower, Missouri on March 11, 1935 to Arthur Wray and Mae Juanita Stansbery Phillips.  He graduated from Ainsworth High School and then joined the National Guard.

Bobby was a lifelong farmer in the New London area.  He was baptized in the Lutheran faith.  His favorite past-times were bowling, golfing and fishing.

Survivors include his brother Kenneth (Janaan) Phillips of Cedar Rapids; two sisters, Frances Wiesner of Des Moines and Kathryn Osier of Mt. Pleasant; and many nieces and nephews.   He was preceded in death by his parents; sister Shirley and brother Dennis Phillips.

According to his wishes, his body has been cremated and a private family burial will be held at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington at a later date.  Cards and memorials may be sent to Elliott Chapel, One Redbud Lane, New London, Iowa 52645.  Online condolences may be left at www.elliottfuneralchapel.com.
