Iowa High School Soccer State Champions

Des Moines, IA- The Iowa high school boys’ and girls’ state soccer tournaments are over and after a week full of weather delays, overtimes, and upsets here are the state champions.

The girls’ Class 1A state championship featured one of the first upsets of the day as the #7 seed Bishop Heelan over last year’s runner-up Davenport Assumption 2-0.

The Class 1A boys’ state championship was decided in the second half when Western Christian netted two goals to defeat Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck 2-0.

The boys Class 2A state championship needed overtime and two rounds of penalty kicks to decide the final as Gilbert took down Davenport Assumption 3-2.

In a rematch of last year’s state championship for the girls’ Class 2A state championship, Dallas Center-Grimes repeated history by defeating Waverly-Shell Rock 2-0 (the exact same score from last year’s game).

In the girls’ Class 3A state championship, Johnston and Valley traded goals in the first half then no goals were scored until the second round of penalty kicks as the Dragons came out on top 3 to 2 to win the crown 2-1.

The #6 seed Iowa City Liberty handled Norwalk 5-0 to walk away with the boys’ Class 3A state championship.

Lastly, the Class 4A state championship went to Johnston after the double-overtime winner to defeat Iowa City West 3-2.

Sandie Hook

Sandie Hook, 75, of Wilton, passed away on Thursday, June 1, 2023 at her home. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 4, 2023 at Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral & Cremation Services of Wapello. Memorial Services for Sandie will be 11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 5, 2023 at the funeral home. Private family burial will be held in the Apostolic Christian Church Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to assisted with the backpack program and school supplies of children within school districts of Wapello, Wilton, West Liberty and Wayne Community Schools. Sandra Elizabeth Grimm was born on November 19, 1947 in Burlington, Iowa, the daughter of Clyde and Frances (Zogelman) Grimm. Sandie was a 1966 graduate of Wapello High School, graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso where she received her Bachelor’s degree and obtained her Administration License from Drake University. She began her teaching career in 1972 at Louisa-Muscatine schools, taught several years at Wapello Community Schools, was principal at Wayne Elementary in Corydon and retired as principal of Central Lee Elementary School. Sandie spent a total of 37 years in education. She was a member of Wilton St. Mary’s Catholic Church. More than anything Sandie enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren; she also enjoyed reading, puzzles and watching Little House On The Prairie.

Sandie will be deeply missed by her children, Andrea (John) Martinez of Fruitland and Michael (Kristy) Hook of Wilton; grandchildren, Jacob, Sarah, Samantha and Matthew Martinez, Meggan, Catie, Nathan and Collin Hook; siblings, Cheyrel (Mike) McConahay of Russell, Iowa and Keith Grimm of Wapello; sister-in-law, Cindy Grimm of Letts and nieces and nephews.

Sandie was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Dick Grimm.

Sports, June 3rd

High School Soccer

The girls’ state semifinals were upset central yesterday and here’s the results. In Class 1A, Gilbert took down the #1 seed Des Moines Christian 1-0 and the #7 seed Bishop Heelan defeated Assumption 4-1. Gilbert and Bishop Heelan will square off today.

Waverly-Shell Rock and Dallas Center-Grimes each snuck by their opponents 1-0 to advance to the championship game today for Class 2A.

In Class 3A, Valley pulled off the upset on Waukee Northwest 3-1. They will take on Johnston today after they defeated Dowling Catholic.

The boys’ state championship will also be taking place today and here are the matchups. In Class 1A, GCGR will face off against Western Christian.

Assumption will take on Gilbert in Class 2A.

Norwalk and Iowa City Liberty are looking to continue their Cinderella stories today for Class 3A.

Lastly, Iowa City West will face off against Johnston for the Class 4A crown.

High School Baseball

Mt. Pleasant will have a home doubleheader against Keokuk on Monday, June 5th.

Winfield-Mt. Union will host Lone Tree on June 6th.

West Burlington handled Danville last night 16-4. Hayden Vandenberg smacked a home run and tallied 4 RBIs in the winning effort for the Falcons. The Bears will take on BGM on June 5th.

Central Lee will host Danville on June 6th. 

New London fell to Burlington Notre Dame last night 8-1 in their conference matchup. The Tigers got on the board first in the 3rd inning due to some errant pitching by Hunter Shipley causing Nick Powell to score on a wild pitch. The Nikes would strike in the 5th inning with 7 runs coming in to score. Isaiah Crow notched a double and 3 RBIs in the inning. Caden Schwenker tallied 2 RBIs and Lucas Johnson along with Jaxon Salder grabbed an RBI each. Shipley pitched 6 innings striking out 11 batters to pick up the win. The Tigers will take on Lone Tree on June 5th on the road.

High School Softball

Mt. Pleasant will host a doubleheader against Keokuk on June 5th.

Winfield-Mt. Union fell to Hillcrest Academy 16-12 last night. Keely Malone went 2 for 5 with 4 RBIs including a two-run homer. The Wolves will host Lone Tree on June 6th.

Danville will face off against Central Lee on June 6th.

Holy Trinity Catholic defeated New London last night 13-0. The Crusaders will take on Highland on June 7th and the Tigers will compete in the Mustang Classic today.

Iowa Baseball

The Hawkeyes fended off the North Carolina comeback attempt to win 5-4. Sam Hojnar picked up a 2 RBI double in the winning effort for the Hawkeyes as Marcus Morgan pitched 5 innings and tallied 5 strikeouts. They will take on Indiana State tonight.

Farmers Market Nutrition Program Returns

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig announced yesterday Farmers Market Nutrition Program checks are now available for eligible Iowa WIC recipients and low-income senior citizens. The programs provide eligible Iowans with checks that can be redeemed for fresh produce at authorized farmers markets and farm stands between June 1 and October 31, 2023. FMNP checks may only be used to purchase fresh, unprepared produce. For more information on participating in the program, contact our local Henry County Department of Health and Human Services at (319) 986-5157.

High School Soccer

The boys’ state semifinals wrapped up yesterday and championship Saturday is set, here’s how yesterday shook out.

Class 1A had two nail-biters to decide the championship matchup. The #1 seed GCGR took down Des Moines Christian 3-2 after penalty kicks decided the game. The #2 seed Western Christian also needed penalty kicks to win their matchup against Regina Catholic 2-1. GCGR and Western Christian face off tomorrow at 10 am.

In Class 2A, Assumption defeated Nevada 3-2 and Gilbert pulled off the upset on Bishop Heelan 2-1 to advance to the championship game at 1 pm tomorrow.

Norwalk and Iowa City Liberty are continuing their Cinderella stories as Norwalk took down the #1 seed Des Moines Hoover and Liberty beat the #2 seed Marion 2-0. They will face off tomorrow at 4 pm for the Class 3A crown.

Lastly, in Class 4A, Johnston won 3-1 against Ankeny Centennial and Iowa City West handled Dowling Catholic in shutout fashion 3-0. They will round out the championship games tomorrow at 7 pm.

The girls’ state semifinals continue today.

Mt. Pleasant Soccer

The Mt. Pleasant girls’ soccer team announced their team awards, and the Southeast Conference released their honors for the season.

Charice Auwerda, a sophomore, was named Attacking Player of the Year for the Panthers as she tied for both the team and conference lead in goals with 24 and had the conference lead in assists with 18 on the season. Auwerda also walked away with SEC Player of the Year honors along with 1st team All-Conference.

Another sophomore for the Panthers, Kiera Frazier, nabbed the team award for Defender of the Year. Her defensive play led to a 1st team All-Conference nod.

Freshman Sarai Sanchez and sophomore Mattisyn Wenke shared the team’s Impact Sub/Off the Bench Award. 

Leslie Lopez, junior, earned the Panther Award, which goes to the athlete who is most emblematic of the program’s values. Lopez made 11 saves on the season as the back-up goalie.

Elly Manning, fittingly, earned the team MVP for her 24 goals and 12 assists on the season. Her senior leadership showed on senior night when she scored two goals to help take down Washington. Manning was also named 1st team All-Conference.

Sonya Simon, a sophomore, was also named 1st team All-Conference for her defensive play.

Tori Wilson and Bizzie Richtman, both sophomores, earned 1st team Honorable Mention. 

Mt. Pleasant finished the season with an 11-6 record and finished 3rd in conference. It was the Panthers 5th consecutive winning season.

High School Baseball

Mt. Pleasant was able to avenge their performance on Tuesday against Washington by rallying for 4 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to win 9-5. Payton Hagans picked up the win on the mound. The Panthers will have a home doubleheader against Keokuk on Monday, June 5th.

Winfield-Mt. Union will travel to face off against Hillcrest Academy tonight.

The offenses were on full display as Van Buren County and Danville combined for 29 runs, but it was the Warriors who would come out on top 17-12. Taylor Sprouse for Van Buren County racked up 7 RBIs on three hits. The Bears will host West Burlington tonight.

Central Lee stopped West Burlington’s comeback attempt to come out on top 7-6 last night. Hayden Vandenberg smacked two home runs and tallied 4 RBIs for the Falcons. The Hawks will host Danville on June 6th. 

New London fell to Keota last night 12-2 after the Eagles scored a total of 10 runs between the 5th and 6th innings. The Tigers will take on Burlington Notre Dame tonight at home at 5:30 pm. KILJ will be on the call with pregame at 5:15 pm.

High School Softball

Mt. Pleasant lost to Washington last night 12-1. The Panthers struggled in the field and at the plate as the defense committed 5 errors and the offense managed just 3 hits. Addison Clark went 2 for 3 with a double and a triple with an RBI. The Panthers will host a doubleheader against Keokuk on June 5th.

Winfield-Mt. Union fell to Highland last night 17-1. Anna Anderson picked up an RBI for the Wolves. They will travel to take on Hillcrest Academy tonight. 

Danville will face off against West Burlington tonight.

Holy Trinity Catholic handled Mediapolis yesterday 9-2. Delaney Griffith and Rachel Martin tallied an RBI for Mediapolis. 

New London will host Holy Trinity Catholic tonight.

High School Tennis

The boys’ state team tournament concluded yesterday and here are the results. Xavier took down Pella 5 sets to 1 to take the Class 1A crown. Wahlert Catholic claimed 3rd place 5 sets to 3 over Decorah. 

The Class 2A championship went to Iowa City West as they defeated Waukee Northwest 5 sets to 2. Pleasant Valley won the 3rd place matchup 5 sets to 3 over Linn-Mar.

Iowa Baseball

The Hawkeyes will open up play in the NCAA tournament against North Carolina tonight at 6 pm.
