Prep Football: Mount Pleasant Stumbles Again, W-MU Stumbles, New London Rolls:

Clinton 49, Mount Pleasant 7

Clinton scored 49 unanswered points as the River Kings rolled to a 49-7 victory over Mount Pleasant last night.

Clinton quarterback Jai Jensen threw for four touchdown passes, ran for one and tailback Taivian Bailey had two scores.

Mount Pleasant took the game’s opening series 13 plays finishing with a one-yard touchdown rush by Carson Coleman.

That was their lone score.

Mount Pleasant fell to 1-7 with the loss and they remain winless in district play.

Next week they’ll meet up with Class 4A’s top-ranked North Scott.

Kick is set for 7:30 p.m. from Mapleleaf Athletic Complex.

English Valleys 54, Winfield-Mount Union 18 

Winfield-Mount Union fell behind early as English Valleys cemented their role as the district runner-up with a 54-18 win over Winfield-Mount Union.

The Wolves would have clinched district runner-up with a win over the Bears.

English Valleys used a 27-point second quarter to pull away.

Winfield finishes their regular season 4-3.

English Valleys improved to 6-1.

New London 32, HLV 6

New London won their second straight with an easy 32-6 win over HLV last night.

The win kept New London’s hopes for a wild card playoff berth alive.

New London closes their regular season 4-3.

HLV ends the season 1-7.

8-player playoffs will begin next Friday in the Round of 32.

Prep XC: State Qualifying Assignments Announced:

The Iowa Association of Track Coaches has released the upcoming state qualifying sites for all classes.

The announcements were made earlier this week.

In Class 1A, Columbus, Highland, Hillcrest, Winfield-Mount Union, WACO and Holy Trinity will be traveling to Iowa City Regina.

Race day is set for Thursday, October 21st.

In Class 2A, the machine that is Danville-New London will be at Anamosa. Joining them there will be Louisa-Muscatine and Mediapolis, among others.

Central Lee will go to Williamsburg along with Cardinal.

Class 3A is much more cut and dry, with Mount Pleasant and Washington both traveling to Solon. West Burlington Notre Dame will be in Solon as well, with Keokuk and Fort Madison also joining in on the fun.

College Basketball: Mount Pleasant’s Ashton Excelling at Duluth:

The University of Minnesota Duluth men’s basketball team has hired former Mount Pleasant standout Jordan Ashton as an assistant coach for the upcoming 2021-22 season.

Ashton’s playing experience playing experience includes stops at Northwest Missouri State (2012-2014), Kirkwood Community College (2014-2015), Iowa State (2015-2016), and Northern Iowa (2016-2017). Ashton was awarded first team All-American during his time at Kirkwood Community College.

Most recently the top lieutenant for Alex Huisman at Iowa Wesleyan, Ashton helped guide the Tigers to 71.1 points per game.

Duluth opens their season November 12th against the University of Nebraska-Kearney.

New Utility Trustee

The Mount Pleasant City Council approved Mayor Steve Brimhall’s recommendation to appoint Lori White to the Mount Pleasant Municipal Utilities Board of Trustees. White will serve a six year term replacing Carol Nemitz. Nemitz is finishing her second term on the board and decided after 12 years that she did not wish to be re-appointed. The Council also approved the Mayor’s recommendation to re-appoint Trustee Harvey Ungerman to another six year term.

MAPC Seats Two Iowa Commissioners

The Mid-America Port Commission (MAPC), a 26-county 3-state port commission welcomed two new commissioners from Iowa to its board of directors. The members were formally seated at the September 13th board meeting. The MAPC is the second largest port statistical area on the Mississippi River and ranks in the top 25 nationally for shipment of dry bulk cargo.

Denise Boyer is a lifelong resident of Lee County and the Fort Madison, Iowa, area. She and her husband Jay co-own and operate Hall Towing, Inc. in Fort Madison. Hall Towing, Inc. provides an array of services to southeast Iowa, including: Harbor services, commodity and bulk material storage and transloading, and specialized services in river construction, tow boat rehabilitation and equipment transfer.

Denise has a history of serving her community through volunteer service. She is a past board member of Fort Madison Economic Development Corporation and current board member of the Southeast Iowa Economic and Port Authority (serving Lee County). When not operating her business or serving on local boards, Denise is active in her local ministry and pursuing her degree.

Mike Norris, Executive Director of the Southeast Iowa Regional Planning Commission was appointed to the board by Governor Kim Reynolds. Mike also serves as Administrator of the Southeast Iowa Regional Economic and Port Authority, a Lee County organization that is active in a number of major economic development initiatives. Mike has been involved in river and other transportation planning and economic development projects for many years. He has other experience in a number of statewide and regional transportation, non-profit and educational groups.  Mike was appointed to fill the unexpired term of board member and Vice Chairman, Daniel Wiedemeier.

Daily Jail Count

In the interest of keeping Henry County residents informed, the Henry County Sheriff’s office has requested KILJ post the daily jail count. During the jail referendum campaign it was publicized that the jail would be able to house additional inmates from surrounding counties and this would generate revenue for Henry County.

Girls XC: Panthers’ Blint, Wagner  Shine as Mount Pleasant Places Second:

Mount Pleasant senior and returning state qualifier Abby Blint ran 20:32 to cruise into a first place finish by nearly a half minute at yesterday’s Southeast Conference meet in Burlington.

Blint, who had been sidelined for the last two weeks-plus, looked fresh and spry relative to the field.

She’s now the back-to-back Southeast Conference champion.

Her teammate and Alexis Wagner, a freshman, placed third yesterday.

Wagner ran 21:09 and looks like the next great Panther runner.

Belle Meador placed 15th overall for Mount Pleasant will Jenna Gilmore finished 18th. Jayden Housh went 25:23 for 24th.

Washington’s Quincy Griffis ran 21:06 which was good for the runner-up position, helping guide the Demons to the team title.

Lauren Horak finished sixth for the Demons.

Fort Madison placed third in the team standings, while Fairfield placed fourth.

Mount Pleasant will be off until next week when they compete at the State Qualifying meet in Solon.

Three of the top 12 teams in the state will be competing there with five ranked teams total.

Boys’ XC: Washington’s Sobaski Rolls, Mount Pleasant Third at SEC Meet:

Washington senior Lance Sobaski ran 16:32 helping guide the Demons to a sweep of the team titles at yesterday’s Southeast Conference Meet at Flint Hills Golf Course.

Mount Pleasant was led by sophomore Ben Carthey who paced the group with a 17:55 which was good for 7th.

Nathan McWilliams went 18:10 for 11th while Christian Bracht-Wagner finished 17th in a time of 18:36.

The Panthers placed third as a team, with Fairfield placing second.

Fort Madison wound up fourth, Burlington was fifth while Keokuk placed sixth.

Prep Volleyball: Wapello Wins SEISC North, Mepo Goes 1-2

Wapello 3, Lone Tree 0

Wapello got 12 kills from Lindy Massner as the Arrows swept Lone Tree to clinch their first undefeated Super Conference record since 2004.

The Arrows earned 25-21, 25-15 and 25-14 wins over Lone Tree.

The win moved Wapello to 25-10.

Lone Tree fell to 6-20.

Mediapolis Goes 1-2 

Mediapolis went 1-2 at their home quadrangular last night.

The Bullettes took down Fort Madison in three sets while falling to No. 5 Holy Trinity and No. 11 Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont in two.

Mediapolis dropped to 11-21.

Their focus now shifts to their Class 2A, Region 8 second round matchup, where they will either get Van Buren County or Cardinal.

That tilt will be played at Mediapolis with first serve scheduled for 7:00 p.m. next Wednesday.

Prep Football: Mount Pleasant Hosts Clinton, New London, Winfield Vying for Postseason Opportunities:

A pair of 1-6 teams will meet up tonight at Mapleleaf Athletic Complex when Mount Pleasant welcome in Clinton.

The River Kings are coming of a 41-7 loss last week to 4A’s top-ranked North Scott, while Mount Pleasant dropped a 56-3 decision to Burlington.

The Panthers have been outscored 154-10 over the last three weeks.

Sophomore Payton Hagans leads the team with 342 rushing yards and five touchdowns, adding 159 yards through the air and a score.

Jai Jensen, quarterback for Clinton, has thrown 13 touchdowns and rushed for three more.

His top target is junior Addison Binnie who has caught 16 balls for 426 yards and six touchdowns.

Tonight’s game will kick at 7:30 p.m. and you can listen on FM 105.5 and kilj.com with pre-game coverage beginning at 7:00 p.m.

Elsewhere in eight-player drama will unfold as both Winfield-Mount Union and New London still have chances at the postseason.

Winfield-Mount Union’s mission is easy: beat English Valley and you’re in.

The Wolves, 3-2 in district play, would overtake English Valleys who are 4-1 in the district with a win.

New London is 3-3 overall and 2-3 in the district, but will need a lot to break their way to qualify for the postseason, though the Tigers are not mathematically eliminated.

Tonight they’ll get a matchup with HLV, who’s 0-5 in district action.

WACO, who is off this week, clinched their spot in the 8-player playoffs last week. They are also district champions.

Two Vehicle Collision in Mount Pleasant

October 13 at about 4:30 pm the Mt. Pleasant Police Department was dispatched to a motor vehicle accident in the 2200 block of East Washington Street. Upon investigation, it was determined that a van operated by Penny Bender-Penfield of Crawfordsville exited Highway 218 using the off ramp and stopped for the stop sign at East Washington Street. The van then entered the intersection striking a car operated by John Tarver of West Burlington traveling eastbound on Washington Street. The total damage to both vehicles was estimated at $8000. Penny Bender-Penfield was treated by Henry County ambulance crew for minor injuries and was released on scene. As a result of this investigation, Penny Bender-Penfield was cited for failure to yield upon entering through highway. John Tarver was cited for failure to provide proof of financial liability.

Virginia Frances Morris

Virginia Frances Morris went home to be with the Lord on October 11, 2021 at the Klein Center in West Burlington, Iowa. She was 97 years old.  A memorial service is to be held on October 30, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral & Cremation Services of Muscatine, 2907 Mulberry Avenue, Muscatine, Iowa. Pastor Dan Schoepf will officiate.  Burial will follow at Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery.  Visitation will be held prior to the service from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.  There are memorials for the American Heart Association and for the Rural Home Missionary Association.  Sympathy notes may be left for the family at www.sandhfuneralservice.com.

 

Frances was born on April 26, 1924 in Callaway County, Fulton, Missouri and was the daughter of T. Gordon and Ruth (Glover) Moore. Frances married Robert W. Morris on December 1951 in Wapello. She had worked at the Wapello State Bank prior to her marriage. They moved to the farm near Letts where they resided for 36 years. Her husband called her his “helpmate” on the farm. Frances was an avid gardener and raised beautiful roses. She was also blessed with the gift of hospitality. And she loved to sew, especially for her family! Upon retirement they moved to Muscatine where they lived for 13 years until relocating to Burlington in 2000. Frances was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Muscatine and had been very active in the Letts Methodist Church and the Letts Independent Bible Church for many years. She had attended Oak Street Baptist Church while living in Burlington.

 

Frances is survived by daughters Sandra (James) Hafner of Sperry and Jennifer (Robert) Hoopes of Letts, grandchildren Michael (Rhonda) Hafner of Letts, Susan (Matt) Carlson of Ankeny and Tara (David) Tornabane of Johnston. Great grandchildren are Thomas (Sarah) Hafner, Nicholas (Kathryn) Hafner, Alyssa (Aaron) Schopf, Braden Carlson, Dominick, Samuel and Isabella Tornabane. Great-great grandchildren are Henry James Hafner and Oliver Francis Hafner.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert in 2006, her parents and two infant brothers.
