Prep Football: Mount Pleasant Stumbles Again, W-MU Stumbles, New London Rolls:

Clinton 49, Mount Pleasant 7

Clinton scored 49 unanswered points as the River Kings rolled to a 49-7 victory over Mount Pleasant last night.

Clinton quarterback Jai Jensen threw for four touchdown passes, ran for one and tailback Taivian Bailey had two scores.

Mount Pleasant took the game’s opening series 13 plays finishing with a one-yard touchdown rush by Carson Coleman.

That was their lone score.

Mount Pleasant fell to 1-7 with the loss and they remain winless in district play.

Next week they’ll meet up with Class 4A’s top-ranked North Scott.

Kick is set for 7:30 p.m. from Mapleleaf Athletic Complex.

English Valleys 54, Winfield-Mount Union 18 

Winfield-Mount Union fell behind early as English Valleys cemented their role as the district runner-up with a 54-18 win over Winfield-Mount Union.

The Wolves would have clinched district runner-up with a win over the Bears.

English Valleys used a 27-point second quarter to pull away.

Winfield finishes their regular season 4-3.

English Valleys improved to 6-1.

New London 32, HLV 6

New London won their second straight with an easy 32-6 win over HLV last night.

The win kept New London’s hopes for a wild card playoff berth alive.

New London closes their regular season 4-3.

HLV ends the season 1-7.

8-player playoffs will begin next Friday in the Round of 32.

Prep XC: State Qualifying Assignments Announced:

The Iowa Association of Track Coaches has released the upcoming state qualifying sites for all classes.

The announcements were made earlier this week.

In Class 1A, Columbus, Highland, Hillcrest, Winfield-Mount Union, WACO and Holy Trinity will be traveling to Iowa City Regina.

Race day is set for Thursday, October 21st.

In Class 2A, the machine that is Danville-New London will be at Anamosa. Joining them there will be Louisa-Muscatine and Mediapolis, among others.

Central Lee will go to Williamsburg along with Cardinal.

Class 3A is much more cut and dry, with Mount Pleasant and Washington both traveling to Solon. West Burlington Notre Dame will be in Solon as well, with Keokuk and Fort Madison also joining in on the fun.

College Basketball: Mount Pleasant’s Ashton Excelling at Duluth:

The University of Minnesota Duluth men’s basketball team has hired former Mount Pleasant standout Jordan Ashton as an assistant coach for the upcoming 2021-22 season.

Ashton’s playing experience playing experience includes stops at Northwest Missouri State (2012-2014), Kirkwood Community College (2014-2015), Iowa State (2015-2016), and Northern Iowa (2016-2017). Ashton was awarded first team All-American during his time at Kirkwood Community College.

Most recently the top lieutenant for Alex Huisman at Iowa Wesleyan, Ashton helped guide the Tigers to 71.1 points per game.

Duluth opens their season November 12th against the University of Nebraska-Kearney.
