Miss Sweet 17 is Ava Fisher

The Old Threshers Miss Sweet 17 is Ava Fisher of Altoona, Iowa.  She is the daughter of David Fisher and Susie Fisher.  The First Runner-Up is Kaitlyn Lee of New London, the daughter of Jens and Denise Lee, Second Runner-Up is Abby Blint.  She is from Mount Pleasant and her parents are Angie and Anthony Blint.  Miss Volunteer honors went to Emma Harvey of Argyle and the daughter of Leonard and Tonya Harvey.

Prep Football: Panthers Fall, Winfield, WACO Roll, Other Prep Finals 

Washington 22, Mount Pleasant 0 

Ethan Patterson had three total touchdowns as the Washington Demons defeated Mount Pleasant last night 22-0.

Patterson, who did not start the game, threw for touchdown passes of 15 and 18 yards — both to Jacob Miller.

The final score, Patterson’s third, came from eight yards out on a run to seal the final.

The Panthers managed to rally late but facing 2nd-and-goal from the six, Panther quarterback Carson Coleman was intercepted.

Mount Pleasant, now 0-2, will be back at home next week against Keokuk.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m., pregame coverage will begin at 7:00 p.m. on FM-105.5.

Winfield-Mount Union 66, Iowa Valley 42

It was a happy homecoming in Winfield, as the Wolves rolled to a 66-42 win over Iowa Valley last night.

Sophomore phenom Cam Buffington finished with eight total touchdowns — four on the ground, four through the air — bringing his total to 18 through two games.

Buffington completed 10-of-15 passes for 267 yards and rushed for an additional 164 on 21 totes to lead the way.

Caleb Giese hauled in six catches for 185 yards, as well, as the Wolves improved to 2-0.

They’ll get a showdown matchup with New London next Friday, with kick set for 7:00 p.m.

No. 10 WACO 41, HLV 13 

N0. 10 WACO scored early and often as the Warriors steamrolled to yet another easy victory, taking down H-L-V 41-13 last night.

The win kept the Warriors unbeaten at 3-0.

They’ll rest up before taking on English Valleys back at home this week.

H-L-V dropped to 1-2.

College Football: Wesleyan Squares off with Missouri Baptist:

The Iowa Wesleyan football team (0-1) is at home this afternoon as they look to bounce back from a road loss to St. Ambrose against Missouri Baptist today.

This will be the first meeting between the two schools in program history.

Wesleyan will aim for more stable play offensively from freshman quarterback Gavin Esquivel, who completed 25-of-44 passes for 218 yards and one touchdown one week ago.

Kickoff from Mapleleaf Athletic Complex is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.

College Football: Iowa, Iowa State Ready for Battle on KILJ:

The Iowa and Iowa State football teams will be back on KILJ airwaves today as both teams open their much anticipated campaigns.

The Hawkeyes will begin the day at 12:30 with the Hawkeye Gameday Show, kickoff against Indiana from Kinnick Stadium is set for 2:30 p.m., you can listen on FM 105.5 and kilj.com.

Meanwhile in Ames, the No. 8 ranked Iowa State Cyclones will hook up with in-state rival and nationally ranked FCS Northern Iowa.

The Cyclones are coming off their best season in school history, resulting in a Fiesta Bowl win over Oregon.

The Cyclone Tailgate Show will open the afternoon up at 1:30 p.m. with kick slated for 3:30 p.m.

Harlan-Lincoln House to Host Author and Biographer C.J. King on Oct 14

Iowa Wesleyan University and the Friends of the Harlan-Lincoln House are excited to welcome professional writer and biographer, C.J. King, to campus for a special presentation entitled “The Spirited Lincoln Women.” The event will be held on October 14 at 5:00 pm in the Iowa Wesleyan Chapel and is open to the public. No registration is necessary. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, masks are required inside campus buildings.

King will present a talk on the Lincoln women, with a special focus on Peggy Beckwith, the great-granddaughter of Abraham and Mary Lincoln and James and Ann Harlan. Throughout her presentation, King will pose as the last female Lincoln, reflecting on the Lincoln women’s spiritual connection to Christian Science, as well as on their individual, spirited personalities, and their family and community relationships.

Her book Four Marys and a Jessie: The Story of the Lincoln Women, includes extensive research conducted in many of the places where the Lincoln women lived, including Iowa, Chicago and Springfield IL, Washington, D.C., and Manchester, VT. Copies of King’s book will be available to purchase at the event. A reception and book signing opportunity will follow the presentation.

A professional writer for 40 years, King is a Vermont resident and a native of Hoosier. She holds a B.A. in Journalism from Ball State University and an M.F.A. in Writing from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. King has a family connection of her own to the Lincoln women; she is a distant cousin of Mary Harlan Lincoln, the President and First Lady’s daughter-in-law.

SEISO PRESENTS THEIR POPS CONCERT “COME TOGETHER” WITH GUEST ARTISTS VOICES ELECTRIC

Mark your calendars now for the 2021 Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra Pops Concerts –
Saturday, September 18, 2021 at 7:30 PM at Ottumwa’s Bridge View Center and Sunday,
September 19, 2021 at 4:00 PM on N. 3rd Street outside Burlington’s Capitol Theater. The
Burlington concert will be held inside the Capitol in the case of inclement weather.
The theme comes from the Beatle’s hit, Come Together, which will be one of the featured works
in a medley of Beatles hits. “These are the first POPS concerts that we have been allowed to
“Come Together” for in two years and we are really looking forward to it” according to SEISO
Music Director Robert McConnell.
In addition to the Beatles, there will be movie music from To Kill a Mockingbird, Back to the
Future and The Magnificent Seven along with a Hooray for Hollywood medley arranged by John
Williams. Several other stunning fanfare works by John Williams will also be featured.
Guest Artists for this year’s concert are Voices Electric, which will present music of The
Carpenters along with their soloist Kelsey Madsen. The Mt. Mercy based show choir is under the
direction of Washington, Iowa native Kent Keating who also arranges for both his group and the
SEISO.
The Pops concert can be enjoyed one of two ways. First, concert and dinner. Second, concert
only. Tickets for the dinner and concert are $50 in Burlington and $55 in Ottumwa. Adult tickets
for the concert only are $20 in both locations. Students and children are free. Concert-only

KILJ — It’s yet another Friday Football Feast as we get set for the second week of the Iowa High School football season.

Tonight, our featured matchup takes us to Washington, as Mount Pleasant will battle the Demons in nonconference play.

Both teams are coming off losses — Washington 39-18 to Burlington, Mount Pleasant 27-18 to Fairfield — and are looking for their first win on the season.

Washington has won the last ten meetings between the two schools.

Kick is set for 7:30 p.m., coverage on KILJ-FM will begin at 7:00 p.m. with the Panther Tailgate Show.

In other area action No. 10 WACO will look to keep up their hot start when they take on H-L-V on the road.

College Football: Drake Smashes in Season Opener

Des Moines — The Drake University football team rolled to a 35-0 lead in the first half and never looked back as they defeated West Virginia Wesleyan 45-3.

Quarterback Ian Corwin threw for 180 yards and touchdown, while rushing for two additional scores.

Cross Robinson had 100 yards on the ground on 13 totes.

Former Mount Pleasant standout Kieran Kohorst finished with a two tackles including one for loss.

The Bulldogs, now 1-0, will take on Montana State next Saturday night on the road.

Kick is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Prep Volleyball: Mount Pleasant Loses, Winfield Wins, Other Prep Finals:

Albia 3, Mount Pleasant 0 

The Mount Pleasant volleyball team suffered their second loss in as many matches falling to Albia last night 3-0.

The Lady Dees won 25-17, 25-13, 25-11 to cruise to their sixth win of the season.

Mount Pleasant fell to 5-6.

The Panthers will be off until September 7th, when they’ll hook up with Burlington at home.

First serve is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.

W-MU 3, Pekin 0 

Winfield-Mount Union got a strong performance from Bradie Buffington, who had ten kills as the Lady Wolves swept Pekin.

Winfield-Mount Union rolled to 25-9, 25-14, 25-11 win in order as they improved 4-3.

Keely Malone was sublime with the service, creating 16 assists.

Keetyn Townsley paced the back row with eight digs.

Winfield will play at Wapello Tuesday night.

Holy Trinity 3, Danville 0 

The No. 9 ranked Holy Trinity Crusader volleyball team raced out to a lead and never looked back, as they sprinted by Danville three sets to none.

Holy Trinity clinched the sweep with a 25-14 victory.

The Crusaders improved to 5-2.

Boys’ Cross Country: Danville-New London Rolls: 

The No. 1 Danville-New London boys’ cross country team had five top ten finishers, as they outclassed the rest of the field at the Pekin Invite, yesterday.

Ty Carr led the way with a scorching 16:46.

Alexander Julian finished third, Rylan Martin fifth, Seth Bailey sixth and AJ Bonnesen earned a seventh place mark.

Mediapolis’ Soloman Zaugg ended his race 10th, going 17:52.

Washington and Fairfield finished second and third in the team standings, respectively.

Girls’ Cross Country: Dennis Leads WACO in Keokuk, Danville-New London 5th:

Hannah Dennis led WACO with a time of 25:50 good for 22nd at yesterday’s Keokuk Invitational at Elks Fairview Golf Club.

Dennis was one of just four varsity runners for the Warriors.

Kirksville (MO.) won the event, while Fort Madison was runner-up.

West Burlington-Notre Dame’s Hadley Augustine was the meet runner-up.

Meanwhile in Pekin, the Washington Demon girls’ were crowned victors, while Danville-New London finished 5th.

They were paced by a 7th place finish by Kamryn Sherwood.
