High School Basketball

Holy Trinity Catholic will travel to play Wapello tonight with the girls’ playing first at 6 pm.

New London will be hosting West Burlington tomorrow, January 27th, with the girls scheduled to play at 6 pm.

The Danville Bears will be hosting Central Lee tomorrow with the girls going at 6 pm.

WACO will host Hillcrest Academy tomorrow with the girls’ going at 6 pm followed by the boys.

Mt. Pleasant will face off against conference rival, Keokuk, tomorrow with the boys’ at home and the girls on the road. KILJ will be on the call for the girls’ team with the pregame show at 7:15 pm.

Winfield-Mt. Union will travel to face off with Columbus tomorrow with the girls’ going at 6 pm followed by the boys.

High School Wrestling

The Mt. Pleasant boys’ team will host Burlington tonight, January 26th.

The Regional Duals for boys’ wrestling has been set with Burlington Notre Dame going against Knoxville in the first round with the winner matching up against Williamsburg for Class 2A on January 31st.

The regional qualifying matches for girls’ wrestling will be taking place January 27th and 28th.

Iowa High School Officiating

The Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) announced that Mike Stanley of Harlan has become the fifth Iowan to win the National Active Official of the Year as awarded by the NFHS Officials Association. Stanley has been a registered IHSAA official since 1970, and he has been registered as an official for 44 years for boys’ and girls’ track and field and 42 years in boys’ and girls’ basketball, football, and volleyball.

Iowa Wesleyan Athletics

The women’s basketball team will be back in action tomorrow against Bacone College at the Bacone Classic.

The men’s team is on a 18-game winning streak and getting into conference play at the Bacone Classic tomorrow. The men’s team is moving up the rankings from 25th to 23rd in the NAIA. This is the first time the Tigers have been ranked since the 2010-2011 season. The biggest win of the season for this team was a home game against then ranked #13th William Penn University 85-81 with Carver Locke leading the scoring that night with 16 points.

The men’s wrestling team defeated Waldorf University in a dual last night 24-14. The next competition for the Tigers will be January 31st against William Penn University.

The women’s wrestling team’s  next scheduled competition is tomorrow at the 2023 Spire Classic.

The Tigers next indoor meet will be the Grinnell Invitational on January 28th.

Head Baseball Coach, Blake Beaber, will be joining us on Tiger Nation this morning at 9 am.

1995 – With a record 6,254,427 ballots cast by fans in NBA All-Star Voting, Detroit’s Grant Hill becomes the first rookie to lead all NBA players in All-Star votes received, earning #1 on 1,289,585 ballots.

Tigers Clawing Up the NAIA Rankings

Iowa Wesleyan- The men’s basketball team for Iowa Wesleyan has moved up the rankings from 25th to 23rd in the NAIA. This is the first time the Tigers have been ranked since the 2010-2011 season. The Tigers are 19-1 on the season and riding an 18-game winning streak, while also being 3-0 in Continental Athletic Conference play.

The biggest win of the season for this team was a home game against then ranked #13th William Penn University 85-81 with Carver Locke leading the scoring that night with 16 points. The Statesmen are now ranked 9th in the NAIA. The latest win for the Tigers came against Haskell Indian Nations in an 81-60 conference victory.

The Tigers will continue conference play this Friday and Saturday, January 27th and 28th, in the Bacone Classic. Game one is against Bacone College at 7 pm Friday night.

Mike Stanley of Harlan Named National Active Official of the Year

Iowa Officiating- The Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) announced that Mike Stanley of Harlan has become the fifth Iowan to win the National Active Official of the Year as awarded by the NFHS Officials Association. Mike Stanley has worked as meet marshal for the Drake Relays for 15 years, once at the NCAA Division I National Championships, and multiple NCAA Division III National Championships and Iowa Conference Championships. Lewie Curtis, the IHSAA director of officials, had this to say about Stanley,

Mike Stanley’s name is synonymous with high school track and field in Iowa. His excellence as an official is unparalleled and he is most deserving of this prestigious award. Mike’s service to the youth of Iowa is seen not only through his life’s work as an educational leader, but also as a sports official.”

One of the 2022-2023 selections for 2022-2023 Iowa Sports Official of the Year was Dell Wagner of Muscatine for Girls’ Cross Country.

Two Vehicle Collision

Tuesday Mount Pleasant Police investigated a two vehicle collision at the entrance to Hy-Vee. Jean Francy of Mount Pleasant was stopped in her vehicle trying to exit the store’s drive.  She pulled out onto East Washington Street but failed to see a second vehicle driven by Mike Schierbrock of West Point that was eastbound in the outside lane of Washington Street.  The Schierbrock vehicle struck Francy’s on the driver side front corner and tire area. No injuries were reported.

Daily Jail Count

In the interest of keeping Henry County residents informed, the Henry County Sheriff’s office has requested KILJ post the daily jail count. During the jail referendum campaign it was publicized that the jail would be able to house additional inmates from surrounding counties and this would generate revenue for Henry County.

Peggy Hays

Peggy Hays, 70, of Yarmouth, was ushered into her eternal inheritance on Monday, January 23, 2023.    She now stands in the radiance of His glory.   Visitation for Peggy will be held on Thursday, January 26, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at the Sharon Reformed Presbyterian Church.   Memorial Services will be 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 26, 2023, at the church.  Burial will be in the Sharon Reformed Presbyterian Cemetery. Sympathy notes may be left for the family at www.sandhfuneralservice.com.  Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral & Cremation Services of Morning Sun are caring for Peggy’s arrangements and her family.

Peggy Ann Hays was born on June 20, 1952 in Carroll, Iowa the daughter of John Milford and Margaret Joan (Kline) Hays.  Peggy was a 1970 graduate of Mediapolis High School and received her Master’s Degree from the University of Northern Iowa.  Peggy was a 6th grade teacher at Central Middle School in Muscatine for 32 years.  She was a member of Sharon Reformed Presbyterian Church since she was 12 years old and a past member of T.T.T. She enjoyed crafting, making cards, traveling worldwide, baking, cooking, her cabin on the river in Muscatine and boating.

Peggy will be deeply missed by her siblings, John Hays of Washington, Iowa, Kathy (Barry) Heilman of Yarmouth, Iowa and Becky Hays of San Diego, California; step-sister, Toni Turner of Burlington; uncle Bob (Debi) Hays of Council Bluffs, Iowa; cousins, Denny (Mary) Paup of Glidden, Iowa and Doug (Debbie) Paup of Davenport, Iowa; nieces, Liz (Josh) Nielsen of West Des Moines, Iowa and Chelsea (James) Hartman of Indianola, Iowa and great nieces and nephews.

Peggy was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; uncles and aunts.
