Myrna “Tink” Parrott (final arrangements)

Myrna “Tink” Parrott, 73, of Mt. Pleasant passed away on Saturday, December 31, 2022 at the Henry County Health Center in Mt. Pleasant.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. on Friday, January 6, 2023, at the Murphy Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant where the family will be present from 4 to 8 p.m. that evening.  Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Murphy Funeral Home.  A celebration of her life will be held on April 22, 2023 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Airport Road Vineyard.   In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or to the Lockridge Baptist Church in her memory.

Jack Hudson (final arrangements)

Jack Hudson, 92, of Des Moines and formerly of Hillsboro passed away on Friday, December 30, 2022, at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. Funeral Services will be held at noon on Thursday, January 5, 2023, at the Murphy Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant with Reverend Earl Swigart officiating.  Burial will follow with Military Honors in the Cottonwood Cemetery rural Wayland.  The family will receive friends from 10 until 11:30 at the Murphy Funeral Home.  In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be directed to the Hillsboro Fire and Rescue Department in his memory.

Public Health encourages you to get your updated COVID vaccine now. COVID spread has increased the last two winters, so stay up to date on COVID vaccines to prevent serious illness and death. There is an updated booster that protects against both the original strain of the virus and the currently circulating Omicron variants. Get your updated COVID vaccine now if you are vaccinated and your last dose was before September 2022. Public Health is now giving Moderna COVID shots during all regular immunization clinics. Stop in Tuesdays from 9-11 or Wednesdays and Thursdays from 1-4. This Thursday, January 5th the hours are extended to 1-6. The flu is also circulating, have you received your flu shot this season? In the interest of keeping Henry County residents informed, the Henry County Sheriff’s office has requested KILJ post the daily jail count. During the jail referendum campaign it was publicized that the jail would be able to house additional inmates from surrounding counties and this would generate revenue for Henry County.

Dorothy Moore

Dorothy Moore, 97, of Mount Pleasant, died Sunday, January 1, 2023, at Sunrise Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Winfield.

Dorothy was born October 30, 1925, on her family farm south of Lockridge, the daughter of Sam and Iva (Erickson) Billingsley. She graduated from Lockridge High School in 1943. She continued her education at Iowa Methodist School of Nursing, in Des Moines, graduating in 1946, and received her bachelor’s degree from Iowa Wesleyan in 1949. Dorothy returned to Iowa Methodist School of Nursing to begin her career as a nurse educator. On January 30, 1949, Dorothy was united in marriage to Lee C. Moore at Fairfield Methodist Church. Dorothy moved to Mount Pleasant in 1971, where she worked as a librarian at the Mount Pleasant Public Library. She was a member of P.E.O. Chapter OX and the First Presbyterian Church.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter Denise (Jay) Nelson of Winfield; three grandsons Matt (Amber) Nelson of Winfield, Sean (Dani) Nelson of Marion, Ryan Nelson of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and five great grandchildren Jacob, Shaye and Micah Nelson, Corinne, and Finley Nelson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lee, brother William who was killed in WWII, her twin brother Don, two nieces and several cousins.

Visitation will be held 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 4, 2023, at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel. A graveside service will be held at a later date in the Evergreen Cemetery in Lineville, Iowa. A memorial fund has been established for Tunnels to Towers. Ron Fye (final arrangments)

Ronald Fye, 87, of Mount Pleasant, died Saturday, December 31, 2022, at Savannah Heights surrounded by his family.

Ron was born July 18, 1935, in Mount Pleasant, the son of Herbert and June (Faulkner) Fye. He graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1952, and continued his education at AIB College of Business in Des Moines. Ron proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. On February 26, 1961, he was united in marriage to Judy Elder in New London. Ron was a computer programmer, working for Metro Mail from 1967-1980, and Broeg and Associates from 1980-1996. Along with working full time, Ron farmed for many years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Mount Pleasant Golf and Country Club and Farm Bureau. Ron enjoyed tending to his vegetable garden, going out for coffee and playing a round of golf. Family was the center of Ron’s world; he would be in the field late at night to make sure he could attend his children’s and grandchildren’s events. Ron especially loved wintering in Texas with Judy.

Ron is survived by his wife Judy; three daughters Rhonda Plimmer of Johnston, Julie (Evan) Sunde of Ankeny, Christy Fye of Johnston; four grandchildren Mitch and Jared Plimmer, Eric and Jacob Sunde; and a brother Warren Fye of Pleasant Hill.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, January 5, 2023, at Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel. Pastor Trey Hegar will officiate. Burial will follow in the Forest Home Cemetery with Military Rites conducted by the Henry County Honor Guard. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Sports, January 1st

High School Basketball

Mt. Pleasant will host New London January 2nd with the girls starting at 6 pm. The boys’ team is currently 5-3 on the season and the girls’ team is 4-6. 

The New London Tigers girls’ team’s next game is January 1st against Van Buren County. The boys’ team is 6-2 being led by Blaise Porter and Kade Benjamin.

The Winfield-Mt. Union Wolves girls’ basketball team will travel to Lone Tree January 6th and the boys’ team will face off against Hillcrest Academy on January 3rd at 7:30 pm. The girls team is ranked 11th in Class 1A and is currently 10-0 on the season.

Danville will host West Burlington January 6th with the girls starting at 6 pm and the boys to follow. The girls’ team goes into the break 5-5 on the season while the boys’ team touts a 7-2 record.

The WACO Warriors next game will be January 3rd at home against Louisa-Muscatine with the girls starting at 6 pm and the boys at 7:30 pm. The boys’ team is ranked fifth in Class 1A touting an undefeated record of 8-0, while the girls are off to a strong start as well at 6-2.

The Holy Trinity Catholic Crusaders will have to wait until January 6th to host Central Lee with the girls going at 6:30 pm. For the Crusaders, the girls’ team is 4-4 and the boys’ team is 3-6 heading into winter break. The Hawks girls’ team is also 4-4 with the boys’ team 2-7 after their last win over Columbus 68-46. 

High School Wrestling

The Mt. Pleasant boys team will be back in action January 12th when they travel to face off with Washington. The girls team will compete at the Highland Tournament January 6th.

High School Bowling

The Mt. Pleasant Panthers girls and boys teams next competition will be January 5th against Washington at the Iris Bowling Center.

Iowa Wesleyan Athletics

The men’s basketball team, now 14-1 and rocking a 13-game winning streak, will have to wait until January 6th to compete against Crowley’s Ridge College for a CAC Classic. Coach Ashton knows that this team still has not hit their peak.

The women’s basketball team went 0-2 competing at the Fairfield Inn by Marriott Classic. On Thursday, the Tigers fell to a talented Mayville State University team that came into the game riding a 3-game win streak, 83-67. Isabell West led the Tigers in points with 27. Friday, Iowa Wesleyan came out strong against Bellevue University, leading at the half 38-32. However, the Bruins would go on a 20 to 8 run in the third quarter and run away with it in the fourth to come out on top 79-60. Isabell West again led the Tigers in points with 16 and Megan Teal added 15 points off the bench. The Tigers will look to get Coach Williamson his 275th career victory at Iowa Wesleyan January 6th at the Northern New Mexico Classic against Crowley’s Ridge College. 

The women’s wrestling team competed at the Soldier Salute Tournament on December 29th and 30th and finished 2nd in the collegiate team race and 4th overall thanks to some strong performances by the Tigers. In the 101-pound weight class Alaina Sunlin finished in 4th and Mya Turnmire placed 6th. Mia Palumbo got 4th place in the 109-pound weight class with Faith Cole finishing in 3rd in the 116-pound weight class. All three wrestlers for the Tigers in the 130-pound weight class finished in the top four with Nonnie Justice clinching 4th, Destiny Campbell placed 3rd, and JoAnna Vanderwood finished in 2nd. Adaugo Nwachukwu claimed the title for the 136-pound weight class. Lastly, Grace Gray finished in 2nd for the 191-pound weight class. The Tigers will be back in action January 6th and 7th for the NWCA Multi-Division National Duals Championship.

The men’s wrestling team will have to wait until next year to wrestle at Central Methodist University on January 10th.

The Tiger’s next indoor meet will be the Dutch Athletics Classic on January 14th.
