Prepare for Cold Weather

The way to avoid frostbite and hypothermia is to plan for extreme cold before it arrives. Don’t get caught unprepared.

  • Check the Forecast by listening to KILJ, check weather.gov or your favorite weather app. Make checking the forecast part of your regular routine so you’ll know when to expect cold weather.
  • Adjust Your Schedule: If possible, adjust your schedule to avoid being outside during the coldest part of the day, typically the early morning. Try to find a warm spot for your children while waiting for the school bus outside.
  • Protect Your Pets, Livestock and other Property: If you have pets or farm animals, make sure they have plenty of food and water, and are not overly exposed to extreme cold. Take precautions to ensure your water pipes do not freeze. Know the temperature thresholds of your plants and crops.
  • Fill up the tank: Make sure your car or vehicle has at least a half a tank of gas during extreme cold situations so that you can stay warm if you become stranded.
  • Dress for the outdoors even if you think you won’t be out much.
  • Update Your Winter Car Survival Kit: Make sure your car survival kit has the following:
    • Jumper cables: flares or reflective triangle are great extras
    • Flashlights: Replace the batteries before the winter season starts and pack some extras
    • First Aid Kit: Also check your purse of bag for essential medications
    • Baby, special needs gear: If you have a baby or family member with special needs, pack diapers and any special formula or food
    • Food: Stock non-perishable food such as canned food and a can opener, dry cereal and protein rich foods like nuts and energy bars
    • Water: Have at least 1 gallon of water per person a day for at least 3 days
    • Basic toolkit: Pliers, wrench, screwdriver
    • Pet supplies: Food and water
    • Radio: Battery or hand cranked
    • Cat litter or sand: For better tire traction
    • Shovel: To dig out snow
    • Ice scraper: Even if you usually park in a garage, have one in the car.
    • Clothes: Make sure you dress for the weather in warm clothes, gloves, hat, sturdy boots, jacket and an extra change of clothes for the cold
    • Warmers: Pack extra for body, hands, feet
    • Blankets or sleeping bags: If you get stranded in traffic on a lonely road, you’ll be glad to have it.
    • Charged Cell Phone: Keep a spare charger in your car as well

High School Basketball

Mt. Pleasant will have one more conference matchup before heading to Winter Break tonight, December 20th, against Burlington with the girls being at home and the boys traveling to play the Grayhounds. KILJ will be covering the boy’s game with pregame at 7:15 pm.

The New London Tigers boys’ basketball team will play Moravia tonight at 7:30 pm on the road and the girl’s team’s next game is January 1st against Van Buren County.

The Holy Trinity Catholic Crusaders will have to wait until January 6th to host Central Lee with the girls going at 6:30 pm.

The Central Lee Hawks girls’ basketball team defeated Columbus 68-32 last night after a 23-8 run to start the game for the Hawks.

The Winfield-Mt. Union Wolves will face off against Highland tonight with the girls going at 6 pm.

Danville will travel to play Cardinal tonight on the road with the girls starting the night at 6 pm.

The WACO girls’ basketball team ran away with the game in the second half against Sigourney to come out on top 56-39. Ellah Kissell did the heavy lifting for the Warriors scoring 34 points. The boy’s team clobbered Sigourney 82-35 thanks to Colton Leichty’s 20 points and Hunter Hughes 17 points leading the way. The Warriors will travel to Lone Tree tonight with the girls scheduled to start at 6 pm with the boys to follow.

High School Wrestling

The Mt. Pleasant boys’ team will be back in action January 12th when they travel to face off with Washington. The girl’s team will compete at the Highland Tournament January 6th.

High School Bowling

The Mt. Pleasant Panthers girls’ and boys’ teams next competition will be January 5th against Washington at the Iris Bowling Center.

Iowa Wesleyan Athletics

The men’s basketball team faced deficits of five, seven, and eight all at different points of the game including a six-point deficit with under 8 minutes to play. Nevertheless, the Tigers clawed their way out each and every time, going on a 16-5 run to end the game and take the 71-66 victory. Coach Ashton gave nothing but praise to Hastings College and to the way his team has learned to close out games. Joey Brown IV led the Tigers in points with 18 with Henry Shannon, Victor Munoz, and Gacoby Jones each recording double figures. Iowa Wesleyan, now 14-1 and rocking a 13-game winning streak, will have to wait until January 6th to compete against Crowley’s Ridge College for a CAC Classic.

The women’s basketball team will look to have Coach Williamson break the record for most career victories in Iowa Wesleyan history December 29th on the road against Bellevue University for the Bellevue Classic at 12:30 pm.

The women’s wrestling team will compete December 29th and 30th at the Soldier Salute Tournament.

The men’s wrestling team will have to wait until next year to wrestle at Central Methodist University on January 10th.

The Tiger’s next indoor meet will be the Dutch Athletics Classic on January 14th.

Major Niccum is a nominee for the Cliff Harris Award after his stellar play this year at the linebacker position for the Tigers. The award is given to the best defensive player within Division II, Division III, or the NAIA levels. Niccum was already named First-Team All-Conference and NAIA All-American honorable mention. The winner will be announced December 30th with Cliff Harris presenting the trophy and Joe Theismann will be the featured speaker.

Sanjuana “Juanita” Tanner

Sanjuana “Juanita” Tanner, 73, of New London passed away on Monday, December 19, 2022,

at the emergency room of the Henry County Health Center in Mt. Pleasant.

Friends may call after noon on Friday, December 23, 2022, at the Murphy Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant where the family will be present from 3 to 6 p.m. that afternoon.  A celebration of Juanita’s life will be held at a later date.  A memorial has been established in her memory.

Delbert Duane Prottsman (final arrangements PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF DATE)

Delbert Duane Prottsman, 85, of Franklin, North Carolina and formerly of Mt. Pleasant, IA, died Thursday, December 15, 2022 at the Mission Hospital in Ashville, North Carolina.

A funeral service for Delbert will be held at 10:30 AM on WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 28 at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant. The Reverend Michael R. Scudder, Pastor, Faith Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant with Military Rites conducted by the Offutt Air Force Base Honor Guard of Omaha, NE. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral Home. Online condolences may be directed to www.kimzeyfuneralhome.com.

Delbert was born December 1, 1937 in Mt. Pleasant. He was the son of Charles and Juanita (Sherman) Prottsman. He attended Mt. Pleasant schools  until his senior year when his family moved. He graduated from high school in Missouri and enlisted in the United States Air Force on July 5, 1957. On June 1, 1958 in Warner Robbins, GA, Delbert was united in marriage to Marjorie Ann Powell.

Delbert served 20 years in the Air Force in LSI – the Office of Special Investigation. He was honorably discharged as an Air Force retiree with the rank of Tech Sergeant. Delbert then worked 6 years as the Supply Manager for Anchor Glass in Warner Robbins. He returned to Mt. Pleasant and worked on the former Blue Bird Bus Company assembly line. Delbert then moved to Bastrop, TX and was a Lieutenant in a security company. He retired some 20 years ago and settled in Franklin, North Carolina.

While his children participated in sports, he volunteered to coach many of their teams. In his spare time, Delbert enjoyed fishing, hunting and golfing.

Those thankful for sharing in his life include his wife of 64 years, Marjorie of Franklin; 2 daughters – Cheryl (Brian) Van Buskirk of Morganton, NC, and Pennie Lynn (Christopher) Jobe of Franklin; a sister, Joan (Curt) Nehring of Mt. Pleasant; 5 grandchildren – Rachel, Joseph, Nicholas, Haylie, and Zak and 2 great grandchildren – Raelynn and Rebecca.

His parents,  a son – Johnny Prottsman and a brother – Charles Howard Prottsman, Jr. precede Delbert in death.

High School Basketball

The Mt. Pleasant boys team moved to 5-2 on the season after handling business against Monroe City 62-27. Three Panthers put up double digit points with Payton Hagans leading the team with 16 points, Carter Amos followed with 14 points, and Aaiden Ashton added 12 points to the effort. Mt. Pleasant will have one more conference matchup before heading to Winter Break tomorrow, December 20th, against Burlington with the girls being at home and the boys traveling to play the Grayhounds. KILJ will be covering the boys game with pregame at 7:15 pm.

The New London Tigers boys basketball team put up huge numbers against GMG coming out with the victory 99-69. Blaise Porter and Kade Benjamin combined for 72 points with Porter netting 41 points and Benjamin adding 31 points and 8 steals. The boys team will play Moravia tomorrow at 7:30 pm on the road and the girls team’s next game is January 1st against Van Buren County.

Holy Trinity Catholic swept the weekend as the girls team beat Clark County 48-30 with Mary Kate Bendlage coming off the bench and putting up 17 points. The boys team clobbered Highland 71-36. The Crusaders will have to wait until January 6th to host Central Lee with the girls going at 6:30 pm.

The Central Lee Hawks will host Columbus tonight with the girls starting at 6 pm and the boys to follow.

The Mt. Pleasant boys team competed at the Regina Invitational last weekend with Ramzy Davis claiming 6th place after falling to Elijah Simons of Fairfield in the fifth place match. Bowen Davis won the fifth place match by decision; Gavin Kerr and William Birdsell did not place at the Invitational. The boys will be back in action January 12th when they travel to face off with Washington.

The girls team wrestled at the Wilton Tournament last weekend with the Panthers finishing the weekend with three wrestlers getting on the podium. Zenlynn Lee and Natalie Albright each earned first place after taking each of their matches by fall. Ella McNamee is 15-2 on the season after claiming third place by major decision. Natalie Parrott won her fifth place match by forfeit and Alexis Wagner did not place. The girls team will compete at the Highland Tournament January 6th.

The men’s basketball team extended their win streak to 12 games this past weekend after defeating Williams Baptist University 87-61. Both teams were shooting lights out from beyond the arc to start the game with the Eagles going 8 for 10 and the Tigers going 7 for 11. Going into halftime the Tigers only led 44-38 but Iowa Wesleyan turned up the defense allowing only 23 points in the second half. Gacoby Jones had a stellar game leading the squad with 23 points making four three pointers. Henry Shannon added a double-double to the winning effort. The Tigers play this afternoon at 3 pm against Hastings College at home with KILJ on the call with pregame at 2:45 pm.
